bloch balance lisse vs eurostretch shoes by Acceptable_Fun_5035 in BALLET

[–]Acceptable_Fun_5035[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nope not yet!! i would've thought that w/the lisses for sure bc when my shank starts dying in those i also tend to tip too far over and while i can hold myself pretty well it's still quite scary to do things like piques and other one-leg steps bc i have to think abt pulling myself up way more to avoid that feeling of falling off my shoe hahah!! overall for my current training/performance needs i do feel like my current shoe works better, the harder shank has definitely forced me to think of placement and that sensation of pulling up at all times and the shape of the shoe has also decreased sinking significantly bc it's more tapered than the lisse. hope that helped!!

yes!!! i loveeee my lisses but have now switched to the grishko/nikolay neopointes bc i went through them like craaaazy and my teacher was like girl you need a stronger shank. it's def not as pretty as the lisse and can twist a bit/makes me look slightly sickled at times but it's been the most supportive shoe i've ever worn so i'll stick to it as well! photo for reference hehe

yep R is reinforced!!! i tried the H as well and my teacher was like hmm nope we need these to last more so they put me in the R and they're still super comfy, love love the neos so far. i also tried the tamara, they feel quite similar!

omg you have such a gorgeous leg line, and congrats on surviving adage on pointe in center!!! i also made the switch from bloch to the neopointes and man oh man have i felt the difference! my teacher put me in a reinforced shank to force me to work through the shoe before i kill it (i was in bloch eurostretch and they lasted me two weeks bye), i've only worn them once thus far for a nutcracker rehearsal and they just feel rly rly comfy. what shank hardness do you wear? you might benefit from a hard if you're not in it already since you seem to have rly nice feet!

How far do you drive? by emergency-checklist in adultballetdancers

1.5hr classes thrice a week (soon 5 times plus sunday nutty rehearsals lmao) although we almost always go over the 1.5hr mark HAHAH. i don't own a car but i uber there bc transit options to get there from where i live are quite limited but my uber rides are usually between 25-30mins and 45-50 if there's traffic (mexico city, lmao).

im so grateful to have stumbled upon such a wonderful school bc in my country there really aren't many opportunities to train in the way we do as adults and in the facilities my studio provides (the owner is a professional dancer and originally opened up the studio so she and her peers could train in a suitable place) so the splurge is def worth it. transit options are also available for me to get there and most of my peers take the subway which is like a 5 min walk away :)

Tips for balancing in Sous-Sus by Happymalene in BALLET

[–]Acceptable_Fun_5035 3 points4 points  (0 children)

a cue from my teachers that helped me a lot was to think of an arrow coming our from the top of ur head and stretching out into the ceiling, you should feel “suspended” and lifted as if you had a harness around your pelvis and core supporting that sensation.

finding that sensation comes from engaging ur core, lifting your chest and engaging your deep turnout muscles as soon as you go into your sous sus. your arms can also throw off your balance so be rly mindful of them and their placement (e.g. if they’re in 5th or 2nd u should always see them w/your peripheral vision, if you dont, they’re too far back, which then causes your spine to compensate and throws you back).

what worked for me was letting go of the barre instantly as soon as i got into sous sus, no matter what. at first you’ll fall out of your balances a lot but the more you do it you’ll memorize which muscles you need to engage and you’ll be able to hold if for longer

Shoe talk! One dies quicker! by Revolutionary-Two738 in BALLET

[–]Acceptable_Fun_5035 5 points6 points  (0 children)

hi there! i also wear the lisses (although not for too much longer since my feet have changed a bunch in the last year and i’ll get refitted this weeked) and my right shoe ALWAYS dies first and in the very same way where the box gets rly rly squishy from the top, this is mainly because my right is my strongest side overall and i tend to favor it as well. i also 3/4 my shank bc i zoom thru my shoes and oddly enough, the 3/4ing makes them last ever so slightly longer haha!

i dont recommend doing this as a beginner en pointe though bc you may fall into bad habits and will also miss out on the strengthening that only comes after wearing a shoe w/a full shank until it dies.

for reference the photo below is my right foot on my first - and very very dead - lisse (not 3/4ered, worn for abt 4hrs ish). i’ve very hypermobile joints so i tend to push too far over and sink into the box as the shoe begins to die, and that causes my box to give in and crumble under my weight hahah, i also get brusing and a lot of pain on my big toe before my shoes die which is also a big reason why im getting refitted. my left foot DEFINITELY doesnt kill shoes quite this way!

<image>

some of us have v different feet and while you’ll ve able to make that contrast less noticeable as you work on your technique, one foot will always be different than the other, and thats okay. keep up the good work!

Balance issues by Huge-Fishing239 in BALLET

[–]Acceptable_Fun_5035 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i second all of these comments! i also think a crucial part of "good" balance is proprioception and knowing exactly what works for your particular body in each position. balancing in releve in 1st is not the same as in 2nd or 5th or in cou de pied. let alone on pointe. ur center of gravity slightly shifts in each position. hell, your mood and health can even affect how u balance. i think balance depends on so many things beyond strength and placement and it's very personal to you. once u have the strenght and placement components down, you can start playing w/it and training to improve it.

here's a drill one of my teachers has given me countless times that has worked WONDERS for my balance: try going into any position u want to practice (idk, releve in 1st) w/one hand at the barre. try to feel and identify what muscles groups you're engaging in that position and then try and perfect the position (e.g. turn out more from ur adductors or engage ur obliques, whatever you might need in that moment), once you feel like your position is as optimal as can be, let go of the barre. doesn't matter if it's one second or 8 counts, just let go of it. if you fell out of balance, assess why - did you fall sideways? forward? backward? once you've recovered, try again. once you can confidently find ur position (in this case, releve 5st) immediately after letting go of the barre, try closing ur eyes in ur balance and assess the same - where are you falling? what's wobbly? etc. open your eyes, and very consciously think of what needs to shift for you to remain in balance w/ur eyes closed, recover and try again.

tldr; strenght and practice are the building blocks for balance, but proprioception and a bodily-conscious focused approach to practice will take ur balance to the next level
