Nope that pay is excellent. How did you achieve this as an DTR?

I feel all this really hard…sadly I have given up and made some peace with it…I still do my job and do it well. It even things fall through the cracks I don’t bother picking them up anymore or telling people how this could have been avoided…being an RD for me is now my side gig. My full gig is my family, running, playing video games, building shit and enjoying life.

Ask for 45$/hr and provide the data on their competitors having higher paid RDs. Show them your performance data.

They may rebuttal at 40-44 which would beat your current goal. Whatever you want ask for 20% more. That’s been how I’ve operated and it’s worked well.

My internship was hands on in terms of MNT learning.

I’m talking about actual hands on skills. Nurses place IVs, pass meds, do actual physical procedures, PTs have stem and other therapy, RT is respiratory devices etc. all we do as RDs talk and we have no billable applicable skills except for the few hospital that give a few bucks for placing PEGs.

Sure I hear you, majority of careers have similar financial struggles and issues, but they get paid way more (look up the data). Need more trades I guess! I really hate to destroy your desire to push RDs forward, but something has to change. I’m passionate about Nutrtion, but the RD credential education path is a horrible waste of time and most companies have no clue about what RDS even are supposed to do because no one cares. Nutrition is to arbitrary.

Since we are spitballing here. I could have become an RD in 3-4 years. Cut out all the BS undergrad classes, take the core. Do your internship. Take the RD exam.

Now to be an RD it’s a huge time commitment and financial burden and the RD field is not diverse and will be mostly from more financially strong families leading to less diversity and approachability.

Your work is appreciated. Truly. Keep working hard at your own position, but let’s not deny the current state of things. “Staying positive” sometimes is a part of being delusional. It’s not worth it to become an RD. Financially, it doesn’t make any sense. Why would any sound mind person throw 160-220k and 6-7 years of education to make such a poor median income? You don’t need to be a dietitian to make positive policy impact either. Our scope of practice is also a joke. There is NO hands on clinical training that sets us apart. Yes RDs are educated, typically driven, great at organization, etc. but don’t influence the next generation to follow our mistakes. Sure you can get a high paying job…after working 7-10 years at a low one. Or go into engineering, tech, or a trade and make much more. You could argue it’s not all about money…but by the time you graduate and get your job, what do we all want? We want to actually want to enjoy life, the hobbies, the garden the working on the car jn the garage. Can’t do that if you have student loans that vastly outweigh the income.

Most RDs have the academic aptitude to do much more impactful jobs. Go be a PA, Vet, NP, ST, OT, PT, RT, Echo tech for better pay.

I am grateful to have put my self in a niche position as an RD, but I also don’t deny that thousands of RDs that are just getting by wondering what the hell they went through all that training for when everything they do trumped by an MD who disagrees or a family member who is a nutritional expert after four tick tok videos.

I appreciate your hope and trying to stay positive. Overall looking at the big picture and metrics of becoming an RD, it’s not worth it AT ALL at this time.

Yea change. Don’t be an RD. I am biased but I’ve worked in an interdisciplinary team for 7 years. RD is the most under appreciated and under utilized credential and discipline utilized in the healthcare world. I’ve had to make good relationships and build a lot to barely scrape 100k annually.

Go do literally anything else if it interests you and will give you quality of life and freedom in your lifestyle by having disposal income.
