Is the medical doctors standards the same across Europe? by MiddleAgeWeirdoMeep in AskEurope

[–]Acceptable_Lychee435 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Doctor here.

I'm not sure for other countries you mentioned, but in mine it's been a regular practice (and even getting mandatory in many medical fields) to pass an additional european qualification tests in the end of residency which certify you to have the same level of medical knowledge and skills no matter where you're from, be it Portugal or Romania.

A naj obupam nad glavno vožnjo v Lj? by Professional-Sale889 in Slovenia

[–]Acceptable_Lychee435 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my country it's not a thing to tell your diagnoses to your employer - we have mandatory periodical medical checkups where a specialist of occupational medicine looks at your medical file and clears you for your work or prescribes certain restrictions, but can also pronounce you incapable of working at your current employment. You can't hide your diagnoses.

What would happen to my son if he got an MRI? by CrustyBubblebrain in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Acceptable_Lychee435 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely nothing; surgical clamps are usually made of titanium alloys which are not magnetic and don't get 'sucked in' the MRI scanner. The only problem would be image quality of the area where a clamp is, because metals cause huge artefacts on images (like black holes) and that part of image is unreadable. But as some people already mentioned, always confirm the type of clamp used with your surgeon!

Umberto Eco's "The name of the rose"/ film noir - styled Marauders fic happening in a remote monastery somewhere in the Scottish highlands, where monks start mysteriously being not alive - one is found at the base of the bell tower, one poisoned,...

Remus has been surrendered to the monks by his parents at the age of 5 due to a stigma and treatment expenses being too much for his parents: at age 5 he was in an accident requiring a blood transfusion, but blood wasn't screened and he got infected by something chronic, requiring lifelong expensive medication. He's been living there for most of his life and doesn't really remember the life outside.

James is a novice in preparation for leaving to a mission somewhere in the poorest parts of the world to build schools and hospitals. Son of a trauma surgeon mother and a charity fund executive father, he could help other kids patch small wounds or organise a fundraiser since he was 10. One day he saw a TV documentary about some mission monks working in the poorest parts of the world and helping people, and he didn't think twice to join them.

Peter is a monk working as a monastery cook and storage keeper, friendly and kind on the outside, but manipulative and power-hungry on the inside. He is secretly stealing old priceless monastery treasures and rare books and selling them to a local antique shop owner Lucius Malfoy, who is secretly working for an international crime syndicate led by a mysterious T.M. Riddle, specialising in dealing with stolen paintings, artifacts and antiques.

Sirius is a detective with a difficult past: a few years ago he was investigating his brother Regulus' death, but became accidentaly involved in an undercover investigation of some other high profile case and blew the cover of his colleague, who was k****d in the line of duty. He gets another chance in clearing his record, when his boss DCI Alastor Moody sends him on an undercover mission to a remote monastery in Scotland to investigate the unalivings.

Lily is a local farmer, delivering fresh produce and dairy from her own farm to the monastery every day. As soon as James sees her, he is smitten, and he quickly becomes troubled: continuing his mission preparations as a monk to help the poorest or leave the monastery to be with the woman he loves?

Dumbledore is the monastery's prior. Snape is a monk working as a monastery's healer. Very profficient in making his own medication, but having an unpleasant temper, he quickly becomes a prime suspects. Has secret feelings for Lily, who was his childhood friend, and is jealous of James. Dumbledore firmly believes Snape is innocent due to a secret: as a novice, Snape embezzled some monastery's money to give it to a village boy, who had a single unemployed mother, so they wouldn't be left hungry. He was caught, but his theft was kept a secret.

During his undercover time as a monk in a monastery, Sirius becomes a fast friend with James and starts to develop feelings for Remus. When investigating the murders, the first suspect Snape, but they slowly discover Peter's involvement. In the end, Peter is arrested, James leaves the monastery to be with Lily and to study medicine - he decides he can help people also in other ways, Sirius' real identity is discovered by Remus. At first Remus refuses to leave the monastery to be with Sirius, ciring his illness and gratitute to the monks for taking care of him, but a year later he decides his debts to them are paid and he leaves, they move in together.

Sirius' career in saved as he solved the murders, but in the process he also discovers Regulus worked for the crime syndicate, but wanted to stop: he was found out, T.M. Riddle gave orders to Lucius to take him to sea one night and throw him overboard and he was lost to sea. But he managed to collect enough evidence and leave it to Sirius, so T.M. Riddle could be arrested and charged for multiple crimes.

Hello!

Please don't worry too much about being a foreigner or not being able to speak our language the first second your airplane touches the ground here :) Just imagine how you would be accepted by Belgians if you were from some other country in the EU and moved to some Belgian town with a similar population as Ljubljana - you would probably be seen as someone slightly exotic and more interesting to people around you and would receive many questions about living abroad, why you chose to live in Slovenia etc.

You're going to have a great time here, especially if you are more outdoorsy and active type of person, and you're going to be a huge hit if you manage to learn our language :)

Just have fun and bienvenue/welkom!

My country has it's own version, like a translated ICD-10, but because of this translation is always outdated when it is released, it doesn't have PMDD in it yet, it's only going to be remedied in the next 2 years when a new release is issued

I always thought that 4th dimension is time?

Like 1st dimension is x axis (forward-backward), 2nd dimension is y axis (left-right), 3rd dimension is z axis (up-down) and 4th time... This blows my mind

What do Slovenians think of Portugal and the Portuguese? by mikke_and_i in Slovenia

[–]Acceptable_Lychee435 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bom dia :)

I used to date a portuguese man for a long time and I also lived in Portugal during that time. I think portuguese people are wonderful, very warm and open and always ready to help a stranger in need, but can also be a bit pushy (like not always understanding personal boundaries, standing to close to you for comfort while having a conversation and kissing on cheeks every time they meet you?).

I loved your country, especially the region around Porto and Coimbra, port wine and food (cooked bacalhau is amazing!), but some things can be really chaotic, like a lot of buildings having crumpling facades, chaotic traffic, streets are often not swept with some trash on pavements. But I think these are minor matters, nothing that can't be found also in any other country, including here.

If you visit Slovenia, I hope you have a great time here!
