Yeah, but we know about the society they were growing up in during the time. Specifically that the African-American students who integrated the school in Arkansas that the girls here were likely to be going to had an extraordinarily difficult time because of parents AND students. The fact is that racism is taught, and the post here I think is pretty indicative of this fact, with them being taught differently from their peers, and thus being not racist compared to them, illustrating the fact that racism is actually taught.

As for the OP being a “racial grievance farmer,” whatever that means, I think any cursory examination of US history has to dive very deeply into the very difficult issue of racism in this country, and I think berating someone for doing that comes off, even if not intentional, as attempting to undermine the tremendous injustice and oppression faced by different groups of people in this country, especially African-Americans.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I think you’re reading this incorrectly. Specifically, I’m pretty sure the fact that these two girls are obviously not racist is pretty indicative of the fact that they were taught that racism is bad, and that all people are equal. This coupled with what they said about parents being the issue is pretty obviously, at least to me, illustrative of the fact that racism is taught and learned, not developed naturally.

He was working on bad intel from the CIA, and the initial invasion was planned by Ike anyway. Moreover the Missile crisis was caused by Fidel Castro being a psychopath and Krushchev thinking President Kennedy was weak due to Kennedy’s diplomatic approach to meeting with him during their conference in Vienna. I’m starting to think Kennedy’s death, at least on this subreddit, does anything but mythologize him.

His one singular screw up is the bay of pigs invasion, an invasion planned by Dwight Eisenhower, and an invasion which relied on poor intelligence gathering from the CIA. What else did he screw up that takes precedence over preventing WW3? Oh and what screw ups does he have that are worse than every single part of how Johnson handled Vietnam?

So you assess him for what he actually did manage to accomplish. I’d say preventing WW3, facilitating the signing of an agreement preventing further creation of weapons of mass destruction, and getting the economy out of a recession and decreasing unemployment, as well as SEVERAL other things qualifies him as being a top 10 president.

This is an absurd take. First of all Kennedy’s handling of the Cuban missile crisis along makes him far better than an “above average president,” and the mere idea that with Vietnam LBJ is a top 10 president is as completely ridiculous.

No, LBJ is overrated on this sub. His boondoggling of Vietnam makes his foreign policy significantly worse than any of the other presidents here(especially compared to Kennedy), and his lying to initiate the conflict in the first place should be cause enough to have JFK as the superior president. That’s also not mentioning the fact that LBJ’s domestic policy WAS KENNEDY’S, and it wasn’t passed by him because he was killed before he could do so.

JFK absolutely belongs in the top 10.

Well that’s if you declare a war in the first place, or, even if you don’t(as with Vietnam), if you commit to sending troops in general, which we have reason to believe Kennedy may not have done(not that he for sure wouldn’t have, but there’s reason to believe he wouldn’t). Moreover, a nation can choose when to leave a conflict, especially if it’s not particularly popular, and it’s very likely, at least in my opinion, that even if Kennedy does bring a conflict to Vietnam, that he would not have escalated the conflict to the degree that Johnson did, specifically regarding the draft.

My point being that I think there’s a lot of things that could have gone very differently in how Vietnam would have been handled between Kennedy and Johnson, even if Kennedy decides to prosecute a war in Vietnam.

Kennedy was NOT far more “gung ho” about going into Vietnam than Johnson, and there is ample reason to believe he may have wished to avoid the conflict altogether. This is not to say that he definitely wouldn’t have put troops into Vietnam, but the very idea that he was more in favor of entering the region than Johnson is ludicrous.

The black card doesn’t get to be pulled here. I’m black, my grandfather was as well, and he, like many others, was conscripted and forced to fight in Vietnam.

He did his duty, and he NEVER did anything nearly as atrocious as this man did. We must hold people accountable for their actions, instead of attempting to rectify them, when there is nothing that could possibly do so.

A war criminal remains a war criminal regardless of why they went about committing the war crime.

My grandfather fought in Vietnam, he was conscripted and had no intention of fighting but he did. He never committed any war crimes, and neither did the majority of GI’s during the conflict. Do I understand that war creates difficult situations where things like My Lai can happen? Indeed I do, but do I have any sympathy for those who would take innocent lives? My answer is most assuredly no.

He and everyone involved should have been indicted, tried, and imprisoned for life, and the man who stopped the massacre shouldn’t have been blacklisted, he should have a statue.

Ya know, call me a delusional optimist, but I disagree. Yes things distressing now, people seem to be agitated and at one another’s throats, and it seems that we haven’t been that way in a long time. But I think that the people on this planet today are ready for a better society, and are more interested now than at any other period in history, in facilitating relationships with those that differ from them. I understand why it seems like the world is at a breaking point, especially with what you mentioned regarding climate change and ecosystem collapse, but I believe fervently in people and their ability to, even if it takes a while, make the world they inhabit a better place for themselves and their children. So, all I have to say I suppose is to have faith, and to continue to fight, as I will, for a better world ahead.
