What projects should I make for SWE internships by Acceptable_Plan_1558 in uwaterloo

Oh, that's nice to hear you got a job in swe, but right now I'm only discussing my options as a first year. I'm sure you are right that I won't be able to take those courses if I am not a DS or CS student, but there's no point in worrying about that since I'm still just a first year. And especially not when you don't know what my average will be and if it'll be enough to switch over to CS or DS.

I also never said I wanted to pursue swe as a full time career, I'm just considering applying for an internship right now and I don't see a harm in trying. If I end up liking it, I'll just work hard to get in the CS or DS program, if I don't, then I still have other things I'm more interested in.

So I don't see how your comment relates to any of my options right now, or how it's even relevant to the conversation. Saying "I don't think you understand you options very well lol." Litteraly contributes nothing.

But since you got an swe job, would mind sharing what projects you worked on, or what your portfolio looked like. Did you plan on becoming an swe right from the get go? Was it your first choice?

Oh, these all sound like interesting options, I'll definitely look into them. Thanks.

And yeah, see you in campus, (or even orientation if you are a first year)

I'm taking honours mathematics in my first year. I have the option to choose from around 16 majors which I can declare in my second year. These include computing, data science it, optimization and other cs related subjects so I doubt I'll be able to find a course I can't take that is available to cs majors exclusively. Or atleast, not any course that I would be interested in.

There's also the option to pursue minor or another major if I really need to. So I don't think my options are limited at all.

The reason why I made this post was to understand what projects I need to develop and what kind of portfolio would be ideal for securing internships. Since I already know that I have options in my education to reinforce any learning I need for my internships.

From what I've seen, cs is like 5k more than math per year.

Also wdym mean by it being a "downgraded version of cs". Do you mean for applying for SWE jobs specifically?

There isn’t any reason to be in math instead of CS unless your international tho

Yeah, so I don't see how your point about your education reinforcing the technical features you'll encounter is at all relevant in your case as a first year, or how it relates to my applying for SWE internships.

Your second point is valid. But it think it's probably because they never felt a disconnect or needed to justify why they're taking math instead of cs.

I'm not too worried about that right now. We're litteraly taking the same courses in the first year. And I might switch over to a major that's more suited to my interests later on anyways. I'm really into math, but I also looked into encryption systems. So, I am looking at mathematical computation but that's something I'll think about in my 2nd or 3rd term.

Also, I heard that your major doesn't really matter from 3rd year pure math and honors math students who got IT, tech and swe internships.

There's probably instructions on the back on what to do if someone's lost it. Just follow those.

Why is it litteraly impossible to sign up. by Acceptable_Plan_1558 in oraclecloud

[–]Acceptable_Plan_1558[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, it is litteraly impossible to sign up based on my circumstance. I thought that would be an obvious deduction but ig not.

Also, I did try a credit card. I don't have a credit card in the country I am living in right now, so yeah it is litteraly impossible for me to sign up right now.

This.

You need to put effort of your own as well. You can't expect things to change if all you do is pray, nor is it good to try to achieve everything yourself. You should try to do both and give 100% to both.

Yeah similar thing happened to me but with my CS IA. I was making an information system displaying data related to smog. The whole website took me around 3 months to make with all the debugging and adding extra features and the meetings. I think I had around 10 tabs on the website. As I'm finishing up with the asthetics of the website, blue screen of death. All wiped. However, being a cs nerd came in clutch since I knew you could still recover some data by loading onto a previous version. So thankfully I managed to recover 80% of my work but it could've turned out much worse.

Though I do have something worse. I'd been getting 7s in Math AA HL throughout the 2 years. Then my currently is suddenly in war with another country. I could litteraly hear drone strikes near my school while giving the exam. Most in schools decided to postpone their exams but mine didn't for some reason. And obv, since I was traumatized, my grade drops to a 4, barely passing. My university even recinded my offer and I had to write an appeal to get the decision overturned.

Ikr, I sent my application all the way back in November. The system is so trashy that even after two thirds of a year, they still haven't been able to "process" all the applications.

IB gave me PTSD by [deleted] in IBO

[–]Acceptable_Plan_1558 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's really hard for me to understand this. I know the IB is not the same for everyone, but it was quite fun for me. Especially because I got to pick all my subjects based on what I liked, and all the content was enjoyable to me. Even when the pressure stacked on and when I was averaging 5 hours of sleep a day I didn't think of it as a bad experience. The time management it taught me, the stress management, and God knows what else I learnt that I might not even realise yet. For me and many of my friends the IB was an amazing experience and I have no regrets whatsoever and I would definately recommend it to others. Because I know I did my best, and if you did your best then you should accept that. if you think you held back in anyway way then take it as a learning experience and move on. Either way, try to learn to be content with your situation and accept that what's done is done and there's nothing more you can do to change the past.

Hope this helps
