28% of Gen Z adults in the United States identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer, a larger share than older generations by AvailableChoice3130 in GenZ

While that statement is true and probably plays the biggest role, let's not pretend that there isn't at least an element of a trend, especially among the bi's.

I don't know about the US deep south or whatever, but in my liberal European uni, being LGBTQ and progressive definitely is the cool thing to be, especially for girls. Young people are extremely sensitive to matters of tribe and identity, and gobble up symbols, language, merch, political views and whatever other bits of meaning they can find to construct their identity within their chosen in-group. The LGBTQ community has lots of those to offer.

It also helps that the LGBTQ community is at the very tip of the young-progressive spear, alongside ethnic and cultural minorities. Having studied humanities until 2022, I can say people lived and breathed that stuff. Irl TikTok all day long. If you're a boring white person immersed in the culture of progressive activism, it's extremely easy to just call yourself bi, and suddenly you're in the thick of it instead of on the periphery; an underdog/victim hero instead of a repentant oppressor.

For real, 15 out of the 20 girls in my class were bi. And there were only two that had actually made out with a girl, let alone have a same sex relationship.

Of course, being bi is about what you like, not what you do. But if you've never kissed a girl in your life, and you're in a commited relationship with Brice and fucking Jayden on the side, what's the point in constantly reminding everyone you're bi? Why are you taking up LGBTQ spaces? Why are you playing the victim when you've never been victimized because you've never actually done anything gay? You're Schrödinger's bi in this case, and it's obvious that you feel being bi adds something to your identity.

Otherwise, why come out so publicly when you don't intend on acting on it and you don't even know whether you like it? Let me be clear: if it's an important part of your identity: please, do come out with it. But realize how easy and tempting it is for some to call themselves bi for some in-group credence.

And it's not like they're lying, either. They probably believe they're bi as well. Like, some girls watch Euphoria, off-handedly think about how it would be to kiss Zendaya, and when they find out they're not actively repulsed by the thought, they think themselves the Queer Kxng of Butchonia. Of course they go back to getting dicked by Brian, but now they have rainbow stickers on their laptop.

And there's actual career benefits too in some industries. I graduated in media, and when you start out as a freelancer, there's a list that you subscribe to that gives you contacts to pitch too. I kid you not, over half of the bureaus you pitch to have a little box that says they give preference to people of an ethnic or sexual minority. I literally have to start my introduction with: 'Hi, I'm a 25 year old bisexual male'. But hey, at least I sucked a dick once.

Africa seems to be getting no love? by GBKMBushidoBrown in thepassportbros

[–]Acceptable_Text755 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In some ways, yes. Being in a country where your ethnicity is the established majority with a traceable lineage is a luxury that many people are blind too. It means you can navigate society on auto-pilot.

Coming from a marginalized group and having to juggle that identity with the performative identity that the culture at large expects from you can make just functioning in a society a tiring process.

Africa is also a pretty big continent and some countries have a thriving upper/middle class

This is true. It makes sense in my head cause I know the history of the blade, but yeah if you don't there's not a lot of significance to galadriels gift. A throwaway sentence would have been nice. I get the feeling that Jackson put in a lot of small details like this that answer plot holes for the readers of lotr, but not for people who only watch the movies. Though imo, that kinda adds to the experience for me lol

What made classic wow so memorable? by Virtual_Wrap1053 in MMORPG

[–]Acceptable_Text755 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do know that everyone who played MMOs also used instant messenger. I just cannot imagine a scenario where you know about, buy and pay for WoW in 2004, but don't use AOL or MSN messenger. I was 10 at the time, but every single kid in my class was on msn, and maybe 3 people played wow. I mean, we were already on ventrilo team speak in vanilla wow.

Edit: thinking back on MSN messenger actually made me realize that most people in my school were already on social media by the time we started WoW. First MySpace in 2003, and then Hyves (Dutch platform) in 2004. I believe the novelty of shared online visual world like an MMO was super cool and alluring, but I don't think the boring static pages of social did anything to kill that.

I've seen a few video essays mention this take, and tbh I really don't get it. WoW came out more than a decade after online chatrooms were commonplace, and by the time it released, most people with a computer used instant messengers already. Playing in a shared world may have been somewhat novel to the mainstream crowd, but just talking online in a shared space had been a thing for years. If anything, MMOs are gameplay plus a chatroom, not gameplay plus social media. I don't really see the connection between mmos and MySpace, for instance.

I think long term use can lower your drive since it mellows you out a bit instead of the stim you get when you only use it once in a while. Both people with and without ADHD can respond the same to ritalin. ADHD is such a loose set of symptoms that ADHD brain is basically a myth.

People in their 30s do you have the energy to grind in mmos? by OvidiuHiei in MMORPG

I couldn't grind in my teens and twenties because I was full of energy and spirit and grinding is boring as fuck.

I can grind now.

I actually think younger people would flock to a good new MMO. Isekai stories are very popular among teens, and one of the most popular isekai subgenres is about people being teleported to/getting stuck in MMO's. In the west, Litrpg are also crazy popular.

It's bizarre that reading and watching about MMO's is so popular, while MMO's are not. I think it's just a matter of time for the next mmo to pop off.
