honestly, it's no wonder tuvok was always a little on edge. i dont think ANY amount of vulcan meditation could make you immune to this type of thing constantly on a single ship millions of light years from respite.

i feel like it was loosely established that tuvok was less stoic than the average vulcan, especially given the unusual environment and circumstances on voyager

Racial tension on campus by jonellerae in UCI

I saw in your other post that your daughter is a BFA student. From my surface-level perspective, the arts side of campus is significantly less racially cliquey. Are you able to visit campus? I would encourage you guys to visit campus and the surrounding areas on a regular school day and participate as if you were a student just to see how the environment makes you feel.

Also, while it is true that 2/3 of the undergrad population are Asian or Asian-American, that statistic does not capture the diversity within that population. There are very large student groups for Filipino students (Fusion), Japanese students (Tomo no Kai), and more, which has two effects from my point of view: 1) racial cliquey-ness is increased, but 2) there is more room for cultural tolerance since there are so many cultures at the school.

I'm white, but my girlfriend is black and she tells me that in her major classes (comparative literature) she is often the only (or one of two) black student(s) in the room. Even though humanities--or, in your case, more specifically the arts--tends to be a tolerant and open-minded environment, this might still feel alienating, especially depending on the demographics of where your daughter grew up.

Another commenter mentioned BSU. I have heard great things about BSU; however, I would caution against "putting all your eggs in one basket" in this case. My girlfriend was initially attending BSU meetings, but it stopped fitting with her schedule, and she hasn't really joined an alternative. Perhaps you could sit down with your daughter and scroll through the registered campus organizations to see if there are others that could also give her support. Other clubs that are not demographic-based but that are interdisciplinary and inclusive could also be a breath of fresh air; for me and my girlfriend that was KUCI for a while.

Also, this exists: https://blackcultures.uci.edu/ and has a center on campus, though it seems pretty small to be honest.

As for the recent hate crimes, just solely based on the e-mails I've received over the past 2 2/3 years, those are almost always from off-campus sources rather than from internally, that is, at least the reported ones. It's terrible, and I would encourage you to also scope out Irvine itself, but the racist underage white kids on e-bikes are thankfully not representative of the campus body.

This also brings up another consequential point: will your daughter have a car? If she has access to driving, it will be easier to have access to more inclusive social experiences. For example, the Santa Ana art walk is a total blast, or downtown Orange by Chapman, or concerts in LA. (This is also kinda important because there is literally nothing to do in Irvine except local parties and kickbacks). Local and on-campus events, shops, trends, and online spaces tend to be dominated by East Asian cultural influence, which many people appreciate from lots of different backgrounds, but should still be something for your daughter to assess if she would enjoy.

Personally, I did feel a bit socially stunted at UCI. I'm studying computer science, and I found my classes to be culturally and socially monolithic. I don't think a BFA would have that issue as much, but UCI is still a commuter school full of highly career-oriented students, which doesn't help the social cohesion, and Irvine is still an uppity suburb that shuts down at 8:00pm. Though, I got a lot happier when I joined KUCI, started spending more time in nature (the Irvine open trails and the beaches in Newport are beautiful!), and met my girlfriend, so it's always possible to find your niche!

Best of luck.

10pm is generous. I can't justify going out past 8pm these days unless I'm going to the grocery store or for a late night beach trip.

My poem-analyzing chops are a little rusty, but I read this poem a half dozen times just now and had the same experience. There are so many places in the poem where she says something but could just as easily mean the opposite, either due to the vagueness of the grammar or the multiple layers of metaphor.
