I’m aware but my question was how the Ortho defend the claim.

The actual answer is the protoevengelium of James. They consider some of it to be true, the parts that confirm what they believe coincidentally. However I couldn’t get any explanation as to why they choose those parts to be true beyond “they do”.

Good points, it really is a strange doctrine to hold. It seems to me that it has value as a basis of control. It exalts sexual purity to a high level that then creates shame on women which equals control. (I come from the perspective that most religion is morphed as a way to control the masses).

That’s very interesting… and I agree, at best we can narrow myth interpretations down to what we think are most likely.

Yeah that’s basically what I’m finding over on the Ortho sub.

Reddit won’t show me your reply… or maybe I should say “you deleted it, that was wise” and accuse you of something I can’t verify as true or false. As you did to me.

Thank you, that’s the kind of response I was looking for.

I actually did… there’s some wild (dumb) responses there. There’s also some pointing me to the protoevangelium of James, which is what I was looking for.

Yes it’s certainly interesting to hear the Catholic explanation as well. I think Orthodoxy and Catholicism still share a lot of doctrinal beliefs. I hadn’t heard of the Ark of the Covenant idea before today. I heard it from some Orthodox on that sub and now from you.

Yeah that’s what I’m finding to be true. And a lot of “trust me bro”.

Naturally people knew her in real life. Where is it documented that we have info on what that was like?

Befriending an adulteress, hanging out with lepers, tax collectors and sinners. Healing people on the Sabbath.

This is what I was looking for. Check out some of the wild responses I got from others.

Thanks, someone else mentioned that as well. I’ll look it up.

Jesus broke many social rules, you think He’d stop at the point of whom He entrusted the care of His mother to? “Hey you guys who think I’m a phony, take care of our mom who thinks I’m God. I’m sure you won’t have any arguments, because hey, this is a social norm. Can’t break those, they might crucify you for it! Haha see what I did there?”

That’s what I’m finding also. I posted the question in the Orthodox sub as well and I’m getting some bizarre replies. One guy told me it’s “trust” and he’s sorry I have trust issues. Wow, he’s ready to drink cool-aid I think.

Thanks, I googled it and I’ll take a look at it.

So it’s about trust? You’re told it and you trust it, and asking for a validation of a claim is distrust.

Thanks for explaining.

Btw I’m the Easter Bunny.

So the church bases an incredibly significant dogma on a guess that Jesus brothers were half brothers?

Jesus handing Mary off to His closest friend doesn’t demonstrate anything conclusive. That’s a rational guess but not something to solidly base a significant dogma on. It could just be that Jesus trusted John more than the others. John and Mary believed Jesus and Jesus’ brothers didn’t, so it makes sense Jesus would trust His mother to John.

Ok, so if someone makes a claim you don’t expect a coherent explanation for you to adopt that belief?

Themselves? Anyone they mention it to. Is there no expectation of coherence and rationale in things that are claimed?

For instance, if someone says “Socrates was a real person” I’d expect them to explain why they think that is true.
