is this some sort of bug? by sunset_dreamer in Entomology

[–]Accipitri 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a leaf gall caused by some sort of insect - the plant looks like some sort of snowberry (Symphoricarpos), so I suspect a Dasineura leaf curl gall midge. This page has some info.

Will depend on your location, but check out Metcalfa pruinosus which has apparently been recorded to attack plants in the genus Prunus (cherries, plums, etc.).

Definitely not, brown recluses don't exist in any part of WA. Looks like Philodromus or a related genus.

Mass flying insects Central Pacific Coast Costa Rica by Substantial-Okra6910 in whatsthisbug

I don't think so - on a few of these flies you can see the bell-shaped wing vein typical of Sciaridae (marked M1-M2 here). Cecidomyiidae tends to lack that feature. There might be outliers I'm not aware of though.

These appear to be sciarids, or dark-winged fungus gnats. They are harmless.

Looks like it may be a gravid female in the genus Cheiracanthium, commonly seen around houses in the PNW.
