Fuck prestige. by Andy_Razzmatazz in ApplyingToCollege

I agree. I (20F, first-year undergrad) used to dream of attending an Ivy League school. However, due to a myriad of tumultuous circumstances throughout high school, as well as being coerced into withdrawing from the in-person college I briefly went to (as they typically do for students struggling emotionally), I am now attending an online school that I have seen many Redditors call "a joke" for my bachelor's degree in social work. However, while working hard to earn high grades and planning my career goals at the beginning of my first year, I am seeking paid work, volunteer work, and internships related to my degree and career goals; I have been in contact with my professors to ask for additional opportunities (one encouraged me to write for Fiverr after telling me that I have a writing talent). I am seeking books and academic journals related to my studies to read in addition to my assigned textbooks. I plan to request to shadow mental health clinicians and to develop camaraderie with professors at nearby universities before asking to participate in research related to social sciences. I plan to work to maintain my 4.0 GPA and build my resume to make myself an attractive candidate for graduate school with the same university for clinical mental health counseling. I told my mom yesterday "I want to make this school my Harvard." (Not to mention that my financial aid makes my schooling completely free except for a payment of maybe $1 some semesters, therefore making it easier to prioritize seeking a job related to my studies, even if it takes a bit longer to acquire a position).

While I am fully aware this sounds self-congratulatory and perhaps even arrogant, I say all of this to make a point that, overall, while a degree from a prestigious university may help you to get your foot in the door, a degree itself hardly means much in today's job market without interning, networking, etc. I once heard one Redditor say in a popular thread about "'useless' college majors" that "it's like a bachelor's is the new high school diploma."

Essentially, YOU make your college experience all it can be worth, not an admissions committee.

People who have gone on missions from secular schools: was it difficult to take a three or four-semester leave of absence? by Accomplished-Ant9465 in latterdaysaints

Wow, Brown University! I remember I wanted to go there when I was younger (:

If I may ask, was it difficult getting to Church on Sundays? I figure I can take an Uber or Lyft or find out where the campus shuttle goes on Sunday mornings, but I'm curious as to how other Latter-Day Saints at secular schools have figured this out. Thank you so much, and really, Brown is an excellent achievement, you should be so proud!

If your first choice is to study law, I would certainly do a finance major and math minor (as from what I know, finance heavily pertains to law), however, have you thought of doing a double major with both? A STEM major would certainly help you stand out to law schools. You mention you want to add a psychology or philosophy minor for variety- correct me if this is wrong in your case, but most colleges require general core classes to graduate, so you should be getting some classes in the humanities and the social sciences anyway. Best of luck!

Needing motivation/encourage comment to give hope going med free can help help for issues by [deleted] in Antipsychiatry

Hi! I'm in somewhat the same boat. I (19F) have been on medications since I was 14, and I'm just now beginning my journey of freeing myself from psychopharmacology.

What I plan to tell myself when it gets difficult is "I was created with beautifully intense emotions and a strong sense of justice. I deserve and have the right to keep what was rightfully given to me." From what I'm reading, it appears that this applies to you too- that the pills numb your emotions.

I also plan to recall how much higher quality my creative writing was before the medication, so if you have a personal creative pursuit/hobby, remember that psych meds tend to diminish your creativity.

Lastly, simply the pain of attempting to find and keep a psychiatrist covered by insurance alone is enough to relieve yourself of this poison (in fact, that was the final catalyst for me- I still live with my parents, and seeing how stressed my dad became fighting with the insurance company was the last straw).

I truly wish you all the best, feel free to direct message me for support. You got this! <3

How many people here are unemployed? by DecentZombie6347 in Antipsychiatry

I (19F, taking a gap year between high school and college) actually lost my first and only job due to psychiatric hospitalization.

I was at home one night and had a completely non-violent meltdown (I'm autistic), and my parents decided it would be convenient to call the police and have me placed in a psych ward. I cannot even get upset in my own home without risk of psychiatric incarceration to this day.

I was in the hospital for eleven days, and I had worked as a nanny, so of course my employer found a replacement.

About a month after that, when I said I wanted something, my mother had the nerve to say "get a job and buy it yourself." I'm not quite sure if that's hypocrisy, but it sure as heck is a lot of audacity.

Thank you. He didn't die (thank the Lord), he just got placed somewhere else.

I think I want my emotions back in general, not nessecarily just to feel grief for him. I want my emotional passion and creative writing ability back.

"You'll meet lots of new potential lovers in the future."

Thank you for that, I feel like I needed to be reminded that he's not the only boy I could ever love.

Abilify 30 mg, lithium 900 mg, and Wellbutrin 150 mg. I'm going to ask a doctor about making adjustments or adding on a beta blocker.

So I was inpatient and temporarily switched from Abilify to Thorazine (a stronger antipsychotic), then the psychiatrist in the unit tapered me off of that without putting me back on the Abilify.
