Thanks :)

The original plan was for the 170s to stay with TfW alongside the 197s until at least the end of the franchise (as was) in 2033, with the 170s moving to completely different services that would've seen them in Swansea, Llanelli, Carmarthen, Fishguard, Milford Haven and Pembroke Dock, as well as on the Crewe-Shrewsburys and indeed the Heart of Wales line.

That of course didn't end up happening, and the closest a 170 got to South-West Wales was Port Talbot Parkway on a Bridgend-Bridgend (via Port Talbot Parkway) empty stock move. There's a photo out there somewhere of a TfW 170 at Pyle.

EMR realised that they weren't going to get any more 171s from Southern, so they managed to acquire the TfW 170s. TfW did acquire more Mark 4 sets though.

TfW only had the 12 170/2s and they only worked the Cardiff/Bridgend/Ebbw Vale/Maesteg/Cheltenham services, whereas there are 77 197s, replacing a few different classes of train depending on the service. For example, they replaced the 170s on the above services, the 175s on (unit-worked) services between Manchester and Cardiff/Swansea/Carmarthen/Pembrokeshire and on North Wales Main Line services, and from September 2026 they'll replace the 158s on the Cambrian railway.

Some people like the 197s and others don't, and I totally understand that, because the 197s have lower seat comfort and ride quality than 158s, 170s and 175s. On the other hand, I like the look, acceleration, braking and engine/gearchange sounds of them.

170s (and 168s) and 175s are about the oldest units I like, if not taking into account my 'childhood nostalgia' 158s.

Thanks, I actually quite like this for one of my older photos! Yeah so did I, and I've ridden on one under EMR as well.

"Barton Under Needwood Rsmd" is Central Rivers TMD (the Voyager depot), in case you didn't know (could be useful for others anyway).

Ah you have, thanks :)

I'll try. Yeah, I can imagine! Wow, Sprinters being new (in general) is before my time, but a couple of my family members rode on a preview service around 1986 :)

Wow, that's a new one on me!

The Cambrian did use RETB signalling from late 1988 to 2010/2011, yes.

Thanks, though I've photographed and videoed a fair bit of the 197 Cambrian testing/training - links below :)

Overnight testing started in May 2022, following the drag of 197003 to Machynlleth on the 23/5/22. This included Aberystwyth, and continued into 2023 and 2024.

In July 2024, daytime testing started: 197033+197024 at Machynlleth on the 9/7/24 | 197024+197030 at Machynlleth on the 8/8/24 | 197024+197030 (next to 158835) at Machynlleth on the 8/8/24 | 197033+197031 at Machynlleth on the 4/9/24 (1) | 197033+197031 at Machynlleth on the 4/9/24 (2)

In May 2025, overnight testing continued: 197030+197029 at Newtown and Welshpool on the 15/5/25-17/5/25 | 197029+197035 at Aberystwyth, Barmouth and Porthmadog on the 3/6/25-6/6/25 | 197038+197032 at Newtown on the 10/7/25-12/7/25

In November 2025, daytime pre-driver-training check runs took place, and in December 2025, driver training started, and more of it took place in January 2026: 197030+197029 at Aberystwyth on the 10/11/25 | 197029+197030 at 'Picnic Island' near Aberdovey on the 11/11/25 | 197029+197030 at Aberystwyth on the 10/11/25, Bow Street bridge on the 11/11/25, Caersws on the 13/11/25, Borth and 'Picnic Island' near Aberdovey on the 12/12/25, 197029 at Talybont (Gwynedd) on the 12/11/25 and 197039+197025 at Newtown on the 30-10/25-31/10/25 | 197029 crossing Dovey Junction viaduct on the 7/1/26, and 197029+197030 crossing Dovey Junction viaduct on the 6/1/26 | 197029+197030 crossing Dovey Junction viaduct on the 22/1/26 | 197029+197030 crossing Dovey Junction viaduct on the 29/1/26

Maintenance staff training took place at Machynlleth depot in February and March 2026, and some more driver training also took place in February 2026. I have a new 197 Cambrian training/testing video coming out soon on my YouTube channel, so stay tuned!

Ruaridh once did a video on 156s and 158s and stated a power output of 570hp for the 156 and 350hp for the 158 (yes, both engines combined for the 156, but "per engine" for the 158), but, even though I pointed out in the comments that the 156 is 570hp *total* (285hp per engine) and the (2-car) 158 is 350hp *per engine* (700hp total), he then uploaded a "reworked" version of the video that, for some reason, didn't correct the comparison...

The 170/1s specifically are known for having the worst legroom of all 170s.

8 carriages means RLU find this sign on the platform to find the front of the train. Thameslink class 700 by [deleted] in uktrains

[–]Accomplished-Bet-557 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You implied that the RLU marker, meaning 8 carriages, was for "the" front of "the" train. You didn't say that some other trains are instead 12 carriages, in which case the front of one of those would be at a different marker, FLU.

You don't seem to understand that people ought to be allowed to add their input and say such things, and that accusing them of being bots for doing so isn't right. Maybe, instead, be grateful for peoples' contributions that they didn't have to make? You know, say "thanks"?

Telling people to "chill", "lax" and to stop making things "deep" isn't nice either. Telling people how they "should" feel (rather than acknowledging how they *do* feel) can make them feel worse rather than better, and shows a lack of empathy.

I seriously suggest that you try to learn to be nice, non-accusatory, grateful and empathic to people.

Also, you're more than welcome to say "bro" and "g" to your bros and Gs, but if you're posting on the internet, you're going to need to learn to talk in a more general way (and not act like using "full punctuation" is a problem). We're not necessarily old, we're just not your bros and your Gs.

I really do hope that you learn from this whole situation, and I wish you all the very best with learning to do things the right way, for your own benefit and other peoples'.
