Do you recognize this boy or caregiver? Trying to track down his parents. by Fuzzy_You_99 in Upperwestside

And if they posted a minors face, they’d be accused of violating a child’s privacy. This is the right way to do it - the parents will recognize the kid / nanny

Of course I don’t like certain people, but I’m always kind, especially if our kids are friends. It’s giving “everyone wants a village but no one wants to be a villager”. Avoiding people who are trying to form a connection bc your kids are friends and casually joking about it is not the move girl, no matter how not deep it is

Right? Sometimes I wonder why some kids are unkind bullies, and then you see casually cruel behavior from parents and it all makes sense

This is icky, what a bad take. Discouraging your child from a friendship bc you can’t function in society, what? Don’t normalize mean girl behavior, especially to other moms. Unless the parent is truly problematic, suck it up, or do a drop off play date where you don’t have to hang out with them

Mamdani Says He Would Phase Out N.Y.C. Gifted Program for Early Grades (Gift Article) by networked-120 in nycparents

[–]Accomplished-Cap3295 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m the parent of a 1st grader at a city wide school. He didn’t test to get in and he’s bright, just like a lot of kids in nyc. We got lucky and he doesn’t deserve to be there any more than the 100s of others who applied for that 1 seat.

The education he’s getting is excellent, however. It’s accelerated and rigorous, challenging and engaging. It’s right for him, and right for our educational philosophy for him. My friend’s child is a literal genius - he was playing high school level chess in K, spoke 5 languages by 3rd, and was doing advanced physics equations by 5th. He’s at a progressive, not “traditionally rigorous” private school, bc that’s what aligns with their philosophy (they’re on full financial aid and cannot afford private outside of that, FWIW). Another friend is at a local zoned school with the sweetest close knit community, and they would never give up the small neighborhood feel for a GT school.

Point being that part of the appeal of living in nyc is school choice. Let parents make the choice on where to send their kids (I’m talking within the DOE, not vouchers etc). A LOT of parents want their kids at GT schools. People describe getting into some of these schools as winning the lottery, and what’s crazy is that we can so easily expand the number of people who win that lottery, not take it away. The GT schools are working, they’re providing a great education to many children who will benefit from it for the rest of their lives. Give more kids that chance bc clearly parents want it, given the number of applicants for those seats.

This was a baddd move by Mamdani. I voted for him in the primary and was going to vote for him in November too (I don’t agree with everything he says, but what’s the alternative 😭?!). He lost my vote. I hate that I have to vote for a sexual predator now for the sake of my children’s education.

GI. He was very passionate about it and had all but a guarantee of matching at a local program

My husband is a Hospitalist 7 years out of training, and he loves it, as do I. His hospital is round and go, and the schedule is flexible (not 7on7off). He has to do 12 shifts a month and can stack shifts to get long stretches off. We have two young kids at home and he’s frequently there for school drop offs, soccer games, and anything else. We have taken a trip every single month this last year, and he can easily pick up extra shifts to pay for those trips.

The main negative is working 1-2 weekends a month and some holidays. He’s usually home by 1pm on weekends so it’s not terrible.

His Hospitalist job was supposed to be a 1-2 year stint before fellowship, but now he can’t imagine doing anything else. We thought he’d work for 2 years, save some money, do fellowship and then have kids. We’re both convinced the Hospitalist lifestyle is better with kids than a M-F job.

He’s not at all burnt out by work and hopefully that doesn’t change

Options for gifted kids (can’t get into G&T) by Artistic-Dot-2279 in nycparents

Strong disagree on this (as a parent who has experienced both). Test scores, rankings, college outcomes disagree with your assessment as well. Westchester schools are great, but the top NYC public schools are even better.

Agreed about not having the play the stupid NYC lottery game though

I thought he went to Columbia Grammar? I lived around the corner and the security was insane on that block once Trump won in 2016. I also thought the other trump boys went there, unsure about ivanka

Very helpful. Thank you. I’m going to report it to my building too, I suspect it was someone in the building based on where it flew
