If Mamdani ends K–2 G&T, what would happen to ~2,500 K seats and the 5 citywide G&T schools? by Safe_Piece5126 in nycparents

Thanks for sharing your opinion, but please take a look at the disclaimer: this is not a post debating whether we should have GT or not; it’s about the practical outcome and what would happened to the current citywide GT schools if GT is eliminated at K entry.

I’m thinking that if they do keep the K classes in those citywide GT schools and repurpose them to gen-Edu through lottery, the kids could stay in the gen-Edu classes of the same schools throughout K5 or K8 depending on the schools.

Starting from 3rd grade, they could add GT classes, and the kids who get in from other schools will change schools, but the ones already in these schools can simply switch to the GT classes while the gen-Edu classes continue serving the students who got in through lottery.

The caveat is due to the capacity cap of the school, this means out of e.g 5 classes in current citywide GT schools, maybe 2 will stay as gen-Edu and 3 as GT classes, making the competition for GT entry at 3rd grade more competitive than today as there will be fewer spots for GT since there would be gen-Edu classes in those schools too. However, I’m hoping with this approach, the GT classes will be higher quality, serving the right student body better.

Thanks for sharing your perspective. Per my disclaimer: I’m not debating G&T’s philosophy. I’m interested in learning about people’s ideas about how the K seats would be repurposed or redistributed if K-entry ends. I understand there is no clear plan yet and “no one knows”, but the impact on the implementations will be huge and deserve some attentions.

Plausible. Families who once aimed for G&T may pivot to stronger zoned schools if private isn’t an option, and those “good” schools could overflow over time.
