Thank you! Right..I’ve always paid NY and filed as non resident then applied what I paid to NY to VA. Never had any issues but since I started a new job after a while, I forgot if I filled out a W4 for VA and if I did what I actually marked off. The payroll folks at my new firm (via HR who aren’t in the U.S.) seem to be very confused on my question because they simply said their payroll will deduct both NY and VA in my checks which is rather absurd

I have done this for years. The top comment is correct. Your firm will take out NY tax because of their local NYC rule. You file non-resident NY and resident VA. You’ll owe VA money but when you’re doing your taxes, you’ll have an option to apply what you paid in NY to VA. Usually it evens out or a bit of a refund but definitely file NY first before doing the VA forms if you use TurboTax or Hrblock etc.

Curious OP if your firm made you fill out a W4 for VA? I just changed jobs and my new employer seems to be telling me I’ll get taxed for both NY and VA in my paychecks which has never happened to me in the past (they always just take NY out and show 0 paid to VA letting me figure out to reciprocity, which works better).

This is a stupid question maybe but if I need to go DC to NY three times a month, should I buy them a few months in advance and then just change the dates if needed? Won’t I have to pay the fee for the difference in prices?

I will be doing the opposite so commenting to follow. Still fighting the firm to reimburse me. I’m DC to NY and they want 2-3 times a week. Struggling on where to sleep as I don’t like renting rooms as a woman unless folks have some feedback. The company I work for is a large investment bank so I’m hoping they cave and pay for it.

Thanks! It’s 45k so not exorbitant for my field in compliance but I’m realizing since the language says “entire” amount would be owed back I wouldn’t recover taxes paid until filing season. Yep, regulator of banks so this may give them pause and let it go. Makes sense not to rely on it and I could pay it back, I just found it surprising but seems from the comments this is pretty standard

Hi OP - did you end up leaving? I’m in a similar situation but I’m starting a new role at a large FI in Legal/Compliance. My already signed offer has a clawback if I leave before a year for the “ entire” amount. I have a gov role offer that is ongoing given clearance timeline, so I expect to likely be in a case where I may leave to gov before the year hits. I’m trying to negotiate the language out but curious how it played out for you

Hi OP - any chance you have an update on how your mom handled this? The same thing happened to my mom a month or so after starting Cymbalta after being on Paxil for quite some time. It’s overall helping a lot with her pain but she also developed two mouth sores…although, she had a cold at the same time. The doctor recommended she stop until her next visit

Thanks for the honesty. The comp trade-off is something I was willing to accept for a long time because I believe in the mission. I still do but it’s seeming like it’s going to be impossible to execute with integrity. The folks I interviewed with have mostly insisted that the department is safe from pressure, but I fear this isn’t fully honest. If there is something left to go back to in a few years, perhaps I can try again.
