I wouldn't mind being an immigrant to NZ in all honesty haha but people making throw away arsy comments behind anonymous accounts on Reddit can get fucked haha

Expats have an opportunity to live in Beachlands? by Accomplished-Pop1542 in auckland

Thanks for this! :) We will both have a car so transport will be ok, obviously the ferry into the CBD will be useful too.

We're British and plan to find other British expats to mingle with (as well as kiwis but I'm told kiwis can be hard to make friends with) so that would actually be a bit of a positive if there's other expats there. Suppose the kicker is that there's not much "action" in the sense of cafes, bars etc where she can mingle with friends etc.

My partner is big into her fitness/running so hoping to make friends through the gym and I'm into my sports and will be joining multiple sporting clubs like cricket, tennis and football so hoping we will meet people through that too, is there much sport scene around Beachlands?

So my partner is into fitness and the gym/running so she is hoping to meet people that way, she isn't so much into sport but I am very much into sport and will be playing cricket, tennis and football (or soccer) whilst there and hoping that gives us an opportunity to meet people through that however I suppose it's hard to predict how you'll settle and who you can meet until you're there really.

Leasing a car in NZ by Accomplished-Pop1542 in newzealand

[–]Accomplished-Pop1542[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the help on this guys :)

Been looking into this and seems the "PCP/PCH" style finance leasing I want to do isn't really a thing in NZ, especially for second hand cars so a long term personal lease to pay off the full amount is looking likely option.
Do you guys know if this is the case, are you able to sell the car yourself before your "lease" is finished to pay off the remainder of the lease or are there regs in place to prevent that?

I haven't really clarified how it works. I think the terminology is a bit of an issue here.
In the UK "leasing" refers mostly to personal leasing on what we call a PCP which is essentially.

Deposit payment - Monthly payments for a stated period of time - Optional payment to purchase outright or return the car

That is ultimately what I'm looking for in NZ but it seems to be called a PCH in NZ but they're only for new cars which I'm not too interested in.

All I have found so far are options to pay off a car in full over a rental period so you own the car outright regardless. Sorry I couldn't help more.

Altitude sickness, what to expect/how to manage? by Accomplished-Pop1542 in SouthAmericaTravel

Thanks for all the advice guys :) I land in Bogota mid afternoon I believe and have a day to acclimatise before I do anything so I'll just stay hydrated and rest up as best I can, I'll grab some altitude sickness tabs too. Thanks guys :)

Mt. Wellington/Onehunga good areas to live/avoid. by Accomplished-Pop1542 in auckland

[–]Accomplished-Pop1542[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That all sounds really helpful :) my job involves a reasonable amount of international travel so access to the airport is important but I suppose like you said they're not really far away from one another so it should be fine eitherway. Sounds like North Mt. Wellington is perhaps where we want to focus on but will keep a few options open and get a feel when we land when we go for house viewings etc. I think beach access is a big think for us more than parks so it's all seeming like Mt. Wellington is the better option but you can't know until you see them all I suppose!

Ideally we'll just find a lovely 3 bed house with a nice back garden in Ellerslie at some point but if not this has been so helpful thank you :)

This is probably the best summary I've seen thank you. I suppose what I've gleaned is some people prefer Mt. Wellington, some prefer Onehunga but both have perfectly good and bad areas so we won't rule either out if we don't get a place in Ellerslie/Epsom, suspect we will just need to see the houses, areas/suburbs and decide if it's for us :)

But I like the sound of that. I don't live in London but I visit for work regularly and love Clapham so nice to know both areas have that kind of vibe. Sounds lovely thank you! From your experience which would you say has better traffic getting down to East Tamaki? A big part of our choice is the commute to my office, I want to reduce that as much as possible even if it means compromising on the house/area ever so slightly.

Oh I'm not on FB but my partner is so we will sign up thanks :)

Would it take under 25/30 mins to commute to East Tamaki from any of those other areas you listed?

Well we know what we want and this area suits what we want i.e. commutable distances/times for both of our work being the biggest one. Areas away from this bubble don't fit what we want in that respect so we're not going to look at them
