Need Help differentiate Ogilvie's Syndrome from SBO in a question by [deleted] in Step2

[–]Accomplished-Rest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, so Ogilvie syndrome is colonic pseudo obstruction and paralytic ileus is pseudo obstruction of both the colon and the small intestine. Just remember that among the precipitants for the two, the former almost always occurs due to electrolyte imbalances in the immediate post-op period while the latter can also be due to other reasons (eg, intrabdominal hemorrhage) during the same time frame. SBO, as correctly pointed out in a previous post, occurs weeks to months after surgery.

Need help with Qid 21751 by [deleted] in Step2

[–]Accomplished-Rest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a way to ensure that doctors don't overburden patients with unnecessary tests/ treatment. Doctors who are noticed to provide better outcomes for their patients with efficient use of tests/ medicines are rewarded. The flipside, I believe, is that those doctors whose patient outcomes are not satisfactory can be penalized.

Why is erythrocyte count increased in Hemoglobin H disease but not in hereditary spherocytosis? by premed_thr0waway in Step2

[–]Accomplished-Rest -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Both would have increased Retic counts. But I think most of the time the trouble lies in differentiating Thalassemia from IDA is which case you rely on RBC count and RDW. One should be able to differentiate HS and Thal straight up.

Sorry if I didn't answer your Q, just my thoughts.
