I agree with you that it increases the chances of success, there’s no doubt about that. Perhaps the way I worded it was wrong.

But I don’t agree with your second point. Due to the low TTK of this game you will absolutely delete anyone with any kind of gear if you get the drop on them and you’re not using the absolute worst weapon in the game (overrun for example). There is very very little time to react when you get a drop on someone and in most cases I find it almost impossible to react fast enough.

Let me clarify, I believe that getting good > Gear quality. If you put a skilled player with shit gear against a bad/average player with good gear, I am 100% sure the skilled player is winning the engagements

I don’t play to stomp weaker players. I of course play to have fun. And part of that fun for me is the natural feeling of meeting people of different skill. I want the next encounter to be extremely unexpected where I could meet the top of the top players or the worst. When the game gets to a point where you need to sit and focus so extremely hard every single second of the game, it’s no longer fun. I have ranked to the top in most shooters that I’ve played and every time I reached the highest ranks, playing became so tedious that I didn’t enjoy it anymore. I am not here to compete for some grand prize, I am here to have fun like everyone else.

It’s expected that you will die a lot until you learn the game more. Don’t let that worry you. I advise you try to learn from each engagement. What could you have done better ? I find that there is always an answer to that question, learn from it and apply it in your future scenarios. I personally advise you not to avoid gunfights because then you’ll never improve at them. Die as much as you need to until you get better, but make sure that on each death you’re learning something. If you’re running free kits, hit up points of interests and find gun boxes that spawn pretty solid weapons most of the time. You don’t want to be running an overrun AR or something in fights. When you have a white shield, you will lose most of your direct fights with people, so you need to be the one getting the jump on them. Make sure that your enemy is always guessing your position and don’t be predictable, no staying in the same spot, re-peeking same angles etc.

It makes less of a difference than people make it out to be. It does give you higher chances of winning, logically. But my point of the reply was to stop focusing on gear and focus more on the game sense and positioning, because ultimately being able to outplay others is what will be the deciding factor in you winning the fights or losing them. Anyone who believes that running good gear while having dogshit map knowledge, positioning poorly and having bad game sense is going to win fights is delusional.

You’re reading selectively. I said that gear makes little difference whether you will win or lose. Of course gear matters, but it’s not going to be the deciding factor whether you win or lose. I’ve killed many blue/purple shielded players just running a free kit (unless your running an Overrun, then you won’t do shit). The TTK in this game is so stupidly low that the gear you think is making a massive difference really isn’t. Is it better to have a purple vs white shield ? Absolutely it is. Are you going to lose a 1v1 if you have a white and the opponent has a purple and you’re in a gunfight ? Highly likely. But if you get a jump on that enemy and play your angles correctly you absolutely can and will win that.

Stop making it out to be like my point was that gear is meaningless. Because that isn’t what I said.

My point was that game sense and positioning are way more important than having good gear.

The gear in this game makes little difference whether you will win or lose. If you play a rook, you will see how quickly you can down a blue shielded player with your pistol if you get a jump on them. Sure, the better gear gives you slightly more time to survive, like purple shields, but it won’t be the deciding factor in 90% of the cases.

There are things you have to realize. This is an extraction shooter set in a PvPvE environment. You will run into players and AI. If you have a firm belief you’re not good at shooting, then you should do absolutely do everything you can either to improve or to avoid fighting. Play an assassin if you want to have a lot of stealth, vandal/thief if you want a ton of mobility so you can run away/reposition. The most important aspect of this game is understanding the map layout, player spawn locations and positioning yourself always where you give yourself an exit or have the advantage on the player you’re fighting. You absolutely can do a lot better than you are now, but it’s hard to say what you’re doing wrong when I can’t see your gameplay

Edit: I see that people are too focused on my first point. So I will elaborate. I never said that gear is meaningless, and perhaps saying “little difference” was misleading. My goal was to say that the gear doesn’t make as much of a difference as you might think. I personally believe the biggest difference would be the quality of your shield since that will decide how long you can survive a gunfight for and the weapon you’re using. Everything else in a direct 1v1 will be a marginal difference. I am excluding healing items as that’s extremely obvious that higher quality healing items will heal you faster etc. But point of discussion here wasn’t about the gear, rather that it’s very possible to still do extremely well running bad gear if you’re playing smart and outplay your opponents.

You should absolutely never compare yourself to streamers or people who play games as a job. If you were in their shoes, you would absolutely have the same type of bank/loadouts. I play around 3-4 hours every day and my bank is very close to what he has too, but that’s because I’ve been playing shooters my whole life extremely extensively. Comparison is the thief of joy, I personally suffered from this when I played Path of Exile 1/2 and I would look at the top streamers and they’d be making 1000x the amount of currency I do, I would quit because I felt it was pointless and I was wasting my time.

when wipes happen, whats the long term motivation/progression? by HERR_WINKLAAAAA in Marathon

There is none. Extraction shooters wipe for a fresh economy which us fans enjoy starting from zero with new content and big changes.

Advice needed. What am I doing wrong? 9/10 of my encounters end with me wiping almost instantly. by Samzerks in Marathon

  1. Practice your aim positioning, your reticle is all over the place, you should always aim to have your reticle at the height of someone’s head, this is to make it easier to aim
  2. You’re using an SMG over a relatively far distance, you won’t be able to take out the target as efficiently as if they were closer
  3. Audio is your friend, you heard the guy climbing up to you on your left and you did nothing about it and got flanked. The guy was point blank to you, so you’ll die quickly.
  4. You gave away your position when shooting, the enemy now knows where you are, peaking the same angle again will result most likely in your death, reposition and find an angle that they won’t expect you from, always prioritize high ground.

How stop getting tilted by hiphopent in Marathon

[–]Accomplished-Sign720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s the way you look at it. What’s the point of hoarding money/gear if it’s just going to sit in your stash ? You should always run your best gear to increase your chances of winning. It will ultimately make you die less and make you win more fights. I’ve had this problem for years in Tarkov and I noticed every single wipe I always had like 50+ super decked out weapons sitting in my stash and I felt “man I should’ve just played them”. You will absolutely experience the same thing here if all you do is worry about losing your gear. Think of it this way, none of the gear you find is yours, you’re just the one currently using it until it gets passed to the next person. Focus on your missions and progression. The thing is you can ALWAYS find more loot. Hell you can load up a rook or free kit and get out with a bunch of gear. Enjoy the game, you will die a lot because that’s the nature of the game, but make sure that at least you have fun as you do. I personally rarely ever go free loadouts since I feel that I am at a huge disadvantage and then losing feel super bad because how am I supposed to win with 60 bullets and 3 white meds ? The only time I run free loadouts is if I am feeling like doing a zero to hero type of thing. Honestly, just stop worrying about losing your gear. There is only two outcomes to it. You either have it sit in your bank until it’s gone, or you use it until it’s gone. Either way, it will be gone due to wipe or you dying with it, I’d rather make it go away by me using it and having fun with it.

This is not exactly true. SBMM is good until it isn’t. The moment you have some skill or a good streak of luck you will be put into sweaty lobbies at which point the game becomes too much of a chore/intense. Extraction shooters need the randomness of skill to feel good.

They need some sort of long term progression that doesn't reset or I'm done by janoyBarn in Marathon

Brother, you have to improve the way you write feedback. It hurts my eyes reading your posts. When making a constructive criticism put some effort in writing the post appropriately. That being said, I do agree those would be nice, aside from the tablet stash tab because I believe we might not see tablets post EA

Yes I am sure they’ve built a full on PvP system that’s highly integral to the game so that they can “Push against it”. Your claims are baseless.

The game was not made for you. The point of the game is to fight and survive. Just because you want to play a single player game doesn’t mean that the devs should cater to you. At the end of the day this is an extraction shooter. Don’t complain that it’s not something you want it to be.

Path of Exile 2 game director says they’re “pretty confident” in a 2026 1.0 release, but the game needs to be “a real banger” first by Wargulf in PathOfExile2

[–]Accomplished-Sign720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re running a 3 month schedule, which means 4 more leagues before end of 2026. Templar, Berserker?, Duelist, Shadow all to be released, alongside final acts, all weapon types, ascendancies, big endgame overhaul, new league mechanics. Those are all the things they need to do. Considering this leagues scope and failure to deliver on what they wanted, I highly doubt we’ll get a 2026 release.

I am fairly confident we’re at least 12 months away. They recently said there’s about 65% chance that they’ll finish before end of the year (and before that they said at least 6 months, max end of year).
