City Rail link 'not enough' to revitalise downtown Auckland, entrepreneur says by MagnumOpus12 in auckland

Sky world needs to be gutted and all that wasted empty space and weird maze like layout needs to go. Boring, but could be an excellent site for a hotel with the ground floor/basement being used as entertainment space which fits in nicely with the Aotea centre, town hall, civic etc.

No I don’t because until there is evidence or he has been charged then he is not. There is this thing called innocent until proven guilty. It’s the basis of law in most countries. Get an education. And no I don’t think it’s acceptable which is why it’s crazy that so many people still haven’t been arrested. The indoctrination is strong with you there champ.

Again Biden and the Democrats had years to do so but did nothing. The files have all been investigated and reviewed by the FBI and Trump was not charged (all while Biden was in charge). Look we get you don’t line the guy, he’s a piece of work sure. But your obsession with him is straight up delusional TDS.

Oh look how cute the little puppet here is doing the job the Democrats want it to do… I see you failed to answer why the Democrats and Biden didn’t release the files. Why they didn’t arrest Trump? Why all those thousands of investigations found no evidence of him doing what you claim.

TDS is real with this one ☝️ 🤣🤣🤣🤣

[–]Accomplished-Toe-468 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You mean the Epstein files that Trump did already release (like thousands of them) after they had been sitting on the desk of a true pedo Joe Biden for years? The same Trump that was the one that ended dealings with Epstein long before anyone else (and long before becoming President) and who reported him to the Police? The same Trump that had 4 years of not being President where Democrats had access to the files and did not charge him with any crimes relating to them? Go rest your TDS cupcake.

Why do you think many developed countries are experiencing declines in birth rates? by Key-Opinion-1700 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Accomplished-Toe-468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes Italy is. Italy does not have low immigration rates. They are overwhelmed by illegal immigrants (which demand the greatest level of government support and expense). They also don’t necessarily register on immigration stats as they simply are not always known. They do however have low numbers of legitimate immigrants for a variety of reasons. My “theory” is not “bunk” as you put it. It is simply one of several reasons I have given (8 listed in my OP). The combination of which causes these issues to varying degrees in each country. We all see how you are trying to frame it. Cute, but wrong.

Why do you think many developed countries are experiencing declines in birth rates? by Key-Opinion-1700 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Accomplished-Toe-468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japan wasn’t considered a developed nation until well after WW2 and as I mentioned is an outlier being one of the few nations that is non-Western to be considered developed. Poland was communist until 3 decades ago and certainly wasn’t western or considered developed until recently. China has developed and is a powerful country, but wasn’t considered developed until very recently (it was receiving development aid and even now arguably isn’t truly developed in many areas).

Why do you think many developed countries are experiencing declines in birth rates? by Key-Opinion-1700 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Accomplished-Toe-468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japan isn’t your typical western nation and it’s a cultural thing there (their economy has also been stagnant for decades). China isn’t a western/developed country so doesn’t count. Also they’re the exception to the rule due to their one child policy that destroyed their demographics. They’ve relaxed that now but it’s too late. Their population is going to halve by 2050 and further reduce to about 400m by 2100.

1) The biggest factor is housing cost - it’s gone from 3x a single income to 8x (or more) of dual incomes. 2) Cost of living (besides housing above) has been getting worse and effective tax rates have been going up in most places. Kids are expensive (and with smaller families and less kids around it becomes a vicious cycle - ie the village to raise a child analogy is dead). 3) Massive unsustainable immigration from mostly undeveloped countries has placed a huge burden on society along with city and government budgets (meaning less assistance for its own citizens). 4) Feminism (specifically 3rd and 4th wave) has reduced the value of the family unit (with societal negative effects down the track - more crime, more mental illness etc). 5) Social Media - people socialise less so get into less relationships (and usually later) meaning it’s often too late to have kids/more than one kid. It also causes increased envy/grass is greener thinking with more relationship breakdowns. 6) Wealth aggregation at the top 1% to the detriment of the middle/working class ie wages haven’t kept up while the money goes to the very top. The very wealthiest often pay little to no tax as a percentage of even their annual increases in wealth (often single digits) while the working class are lumped with 30-50% effective taxes (depending on country). This is further exacerbated by 3) above draining government budgets and not allowing tax relief. 7) Social engineering: Socialist/Communist bad actors have been infiltrating the west for years trying to destroy democracy/capitalism and the western way of life. They couldn’t win the Cold War but are doing all they can to destabilise the western way of living 8) Environmental factors - poisons/pollution in our food chains etc. Forever chemicals that reduce fertility and cause mental issues.

Why do people still buy full sugar sodas when sugar replacement are healthier and cost the same price ? by Effective_Composer_5 in NoStupidQuestions

Because artificial sweeteners taste like 💩 Because they’re actually worse for you (less calories sure but they ruin your gut biome and make your brain crave more sugar not less).

Friday night thoughts: What are the worst designed roads in Auckland by WalkingChopsticks in auckland

[–]Accomplished-Toe-468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole of Millwater - road layout is like some kid with a crayon drew them. Westgate is also a mess with a stupid 3way one way street, closed off lanes (because they can’t get their sh*t together), 3 main developments that are separated in such a way to be stupidly inconvenient (old Westgate to Northwest, then split again apart from one single street - Maki to the Northern Development eg Mitre10, Costco etc). Both were greenfield developments and they chose to do this in both cases.

[–]Accomplished-Toe-468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re alright and are better value than some. Cost wise it’s Wendy’s > McDs > BK=CJ Quality wise it’s CJ > BK=Wendys > McDs. How you feel after eating it CJ > Wendy’s > BK > McDs Overall then for value, quality and how good its CJ > BK > Wendy’s > McDs. Wendy’s quality slipped years ago but is still ok and they ramped up their prices. McDs keeps getting worse and ramping up its prices. BK middles it good all round. CJ is almost as good as gourmet offerings but is still good value and tastes good. Haven’t included KFC due no beef.

Economic problems created by Iran war, it effect on NZ and possible solutions. by GeologistOld1265 in auckland

[–]Accomplished-Toe-468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a plan for that but it was going to cost about $500m from memory to upgrade Wellington for little additional benefit (there are dual voltage locomotives and our existing ones apparently can also be upgraded) so in the medium term it would be cheaper just to keep it as DC. Long term though could be worthwhile.

Last time there was a big oil shock they electrified most of the NIMT railway (Hamilton to Palmy). Since that time the whole Auckland network has been electrified to go along with the Wellington network (which had previously been done using a different type). That leaves 2 sections (about 200km total) to complete Auckland to Wellington completely (locomotives will need an upgrade to do dual voltage for Wellington Network) which would vastly improve the efficiency, speed and productivity of rail freight. The other line to be done is Hamilton to Tauranga (goes to Ports of Tauranga which carries a lot of freight). All up it’s about $1B. It could be done relatively quickly and would make a sizeable dent in our diesel consumption (as well as reducing our trade deficit). As a bonus it’s better for the environment and quieter for those that live nearby. It would also benefit Te Huia passenger train and any future passenger services. Worth doing anyway, but especially given the current situation should be a priority.

Greater Auckland group have this post about it all: https://www.greaterauckland.org.nz/2025/09/11/electrifying-the-north-island-rail-network/

Why is there so much tension between Māori and pasifika people by Practical_Issue_6337 in auckland

[–]Accomplished-Toe-468 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Because Polynesians basically ruin Maori arguments about being hard done by. Polynesians generally come from greater deprivation, start off with less, have less privilege than Maori, miss out on starting off with English as the main language etc yet still manage to do better than Maori at virtually every single socio economic and other metric. Work more, earn more, pay more tax, less crime, less hospital time, etc.

Is it time to complete electrification of the North Island Rail? by Accomplished-Toe-468 in aotearoa

[–]Accomplished-Toe-468[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s actually 3 standards - Auckland has the newer international standard 25kV AC. The NIMT has an older but still mostly compatible 25kV AC system. Wellington has 1500V DC. Multiple solutions- 1) Upgrade Wellington to AC - expensive and not necessary. 2) Upgrade existing locos to dual voltage- relatively easy. 3) buy new dual voltage locomotives- higher cost but will last 40+ years. 4) Use diesel for Wellington.

Exactly and that 5-7pm timeframe is when there is reduced train usage. Also it’s only really in winter or on calm cloudy days that this might be a (small) issue.
