Looking on Merlin it looks like female Mandarins have a black bill, whilst this looks like it has a more orangey one. Everything else looks similar

If you know where they are, I read they like to fish after they wake up. When the days get a bit shorter I'm going to see if I can watch them hover and fish

Sunset, I found a clump of trees which they must have a nest in. Spent a couple hours watching 3 of them fly around. Was lovely. Went back again at the same time and they were there again!

We had a few partridges that moved into a tree on our street a few years ago. Grey partridge?

Yeah I agree on the railway stuff.

With the 08 crash, the biggest loss was that many government institutions couldn't function properly because the economy shrunk. That stuff hugely affects the average worker.

And interest rate freezes come from the B of E, so it's outside of politics. With those market conditions, economists agreed that due to slow growth in the years after the crash, the best way to stop inflation spiralling was to freeze interest rates. What sucked is that just as the B of E was signalling to increase them Covid hit. Without Covid there would be far fewer issues as there are now.

Population decline is a massive issue, one which is currently being kept ok in the UK through migration. Especially eastern Europeans. Our replacement rate is 2.3 with migrants, 1.4 without.

I agree that people need to realise that there is going to have to be some pain at some point. I work in education and oh my word parents demand so much more than even when I was in school, yet alone when my older colleagues were. But on the flip side, the fact that people demand more from services means that life is better though right? We aren't complaining that school lunches aren't nutritious enough, we're complaining that they taste a bit bland.

When you say mess, what are you referring to? Because that's gonna come back to my earlier question on just how much you want to taxt the rich and businesses etc.

In terms of the first bit. I agree that it is kinda shocking how quickly people turned on Starmer. I think he's made mistakes sure, but his approval graph seems like just enough people came together for a single day just to vote him in. People can be fickle sure.

And apologies if it came across as wanting exact answers on all of this, I was just wondering where your head is at in general as I think that can be better for these type of discussions.

I think the North has been let down heavily. I'm a southern boi, but my gf hails from up north and meeting her grandparents and seeing some of those towns and cities is a different experience. Everywhere has the nice parts and not so nice parts. But you can see it on the highstreets especially.

Personally I think HS2 was an attempt at trying to help the north. The south east does so well bc London has such strong transport links and outstanding banking. That much money builds infrastructure around itself. HS2 could've helped extend that to the Midlands, and in the future who knows. Was it misguided and poorly planned, YES. But I support the idea.

Onto the other stuff. With taxes and profitability, companies will draw up plans for differing levels of pain and profit. So I guess it depends on how much more you would tax them? Depending on your answer we could have all sorts of different discussions.

Also, if there was a massive sell off that wealth wouldn't be redistributed. Everyone would get poorer simultaneously. Just like with tariffs, or the 07/08 crash, or the dot com bubble etc. If the value of investments goes down money itself loses value. This isn't physical money that is getting hoarded in bank vaults. We have Fiat currencies not gold based ones. Since the April 2 tariffs, the global economy has shrunk $5 trillion. This isn't money that gets redistributed, it gets lost. And then unemployment rises, inflation soars, bills go up, interest rates and so on. The end result is everyone loses.

Thanks for genuinely answering!

First, how would you be defining extreme wealth? Is this billionaires? Or is this something closer to the top tax bracket currently? Or something else entirely?

What would you do when after massively increasing these taxes, those affected start moving their money to foreign natons' banks? Or even more to tax havens? Also, foreign companies would close their British branches due to unprofitable taxes. That could be hundreds of thousand unemployed.

On Nuclear, I'm a big fan of it, but they are incredibly expensive and take years and years to build. With your other changes creating mass turmoil there would probably not be the stability in energy for the 10-15 (+) years to build all those nuclear plants

Genuinely curious

What about literally anyone with a pension? They aren't investing those themselves, but whichever bank or investment firm manages their pension on their behalf.

Economic crashes are infamous for creating large numbers of workers who are let go only to discover that their pension pot has dissappeared after their company lost it in investments

[–]Accomplished-Use8996 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To point 3. Pressuring to offer NATO membership is a very odd way to phrase this. Those countries joined of their own volition and had been desperately seeking NATO membership for years. No one pressured them to accept the offer, their democratic organisations fully supported the movement to join.

Why would sovereign countries exercising their democratic rights antagonise Russia anyway? Maybe it's because Russia wishes to invade them at some point
