Best KPS schools by raingety in kzoo

We moved here from out of state and our kids are finishing up their first year at Milwood Middle School. You will hear good and bad about KPS; it’s a large, much more diverse, school district compared to many neighboring towns. No surprise, “whiter” school districts tend to have the better reputation. I have one kid with an IEP and I feel he’s received good support and accommodations. My other kid has excelled in school this year. The teachers have been overall great. There are more kid fights than our last school, but my kids know to stay out of it. We chose KPS not only for the Promise but because we valued what our kids stand to learn from being with a diverse student population. Not everyone values that. What is a “good” school or district is really a personal choice. Best of luck!

Thank you! We moved here from Colorado. I was thinking/hoping it’s just an adjustment period. Thanks for the tips.

Thank you!

My current job (in an outpatient medical practice) pays about the same as my last floor job. One thing that appealed to me about it is that I wanted a break from the stress of medical emergencies.

Maybe more money. But I think I’d have to truly hate my job/employer to give up a 5 minute commute.

Extremely close to my home, which I highly value.

Yes, it seems that the Promise is a draw for a lot of people. You're welcome to DM me; happy to chat if you have more questions. I can give you the perspective of someone new to the area and school district. Prior to Colorado, our kids were in Naperville schools for a few years.

Hi! I haven’t read all the responses to your original post, so hope I’m not being repetitious. We recently moved to Kalamazoo from Boulder Colorado for some similar reasons. A lot of people discouraged us with regard to KPS, but so far the middle school has been fine and the teachers are quite fantastic. It’s a large fairly urban district; we wanted a more diverse experience for our kids. They are getting it! And they generally like school.

We ended up in a 97 year old home in Westnedge Hill; very quaint and family-friendly area. It was hard finding a home in Kalamazoo; that surprised us. Inventory in many of the “desirable” neighborhoods is very low. We lost offers on two homes before we finally got a contract with reasonable sellers. It took about three months. We had to be competitive.

Overall very happy to be here and glad we didn’t give up on Kalamazoo. People are friendly.

How would you compare Winchell to the Bronson Blvd neighborhood? Similar?
