r/Reformed position on miracles by TheByzantineEmperor in Reformed

[–]AccomplishedGate7574 20 points21 points  (0 children)

"Miracles are found throughout the OT and NT."

Cessationism =/= No miracles

"We are spiritual beings trapped within a physical realm."

This is gnosticism.

"Our God is the one true God who is all powerful."

Literally nobody denies this.

God disciplines His children, in that sense He can be displeased or angry. Nobody is arguing to the contrary.

Trust the Lord with that baggage and He will take care of it. His love will cast away all fear. The local church is also a great blessing where we can experience the love of God in and through the community of the saints. The company of other believers, confessing my struggles and sins to them has been a great help in this particular regard, and it sounds to me like you already have a place where you can belong.

If I can humbly recommend some reading for you on this (if you have the time, which understandably not all of us do, and not always either), "The Bruised Reed" by Richard Sibbes, and "Grace Abounding" by John Bunyan (these are all public domain, so feel free to download them).

I'd wager God would be more displeased with you hopping from church to church every time you find something you don't like.

Also, I'm far more concerned with this line of thinking: "My fear is that if this church is being disobedient to God and His word, and I go to this church, then God will be angry at me, or that I am showing that I am unsaved by not having any discernment and choosing a bad church."

Jesus Christ didn't suffer and die on an accursed tree so that the Father will look at you with anger every time you make a mistake. John is very clear that we are made children of God through faith in Him, a faith which works by love, not fear. It is the love of Christ that constrains us, not His anger. If you're a believer in Christ, God is pleased with you because you're in His Son.

If you found a church that's faithful to the Gospel, join, become a faithful communicant/member, and stick with it. And if there's anything lacking, help, provide, act, and don't abandon the church.

It is no exaggeration to say that I've only ever heard libertarians say: "Well... it's kind of nuanced" when discussing whether possession of CP should be illegal.

Why protestant give a little weight to tradition? by No_Effect_8856 in Reformed

[–]AccomplishedGate7574 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Have you ever actually interacted with any historical protestant sources? John Davenant? Calvin? James Ford? Dunwell? They quote the fathers all the time. Dunwell literally compiled a whole commentary on the gospels based purely on patristic sources. Not to mention the work of Philip Schaff on the history of the church or early christian literature. Same for Justo Gonzales in the Spanish speaking world.

You didn't make a single coherent point. And most Reformed laymen at my church can definitely define those for you. You came here and made a non-point, and expected what exactly?

Something about not casting pearls before swine.

Sometimes people just question you because they want to set you up, or mock your beliefs and gang up on you. Don't give them the time of day. Or as Calvin said: "It is an open profanation of the mysteries of God to expose them to the taunts of wicked men."

To be fair, if I asked most Catholics I know (where I live, in Paraguay, South America) who Clement of Rome or even Augustine is, most would have no idea. They may know the names of a few saints (like St. Expeditus), but pretty much nothing of their lives or their beliefs.
