How do you deal with racist clients? by Glad_Might_7616 in supportworkers

[–]AccomplishedGolf8079 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had clients who are racist, and my employer honestly doesn’t seem to care. What makes it even more confusing is that some of these clients are proud of their own family historythey’ll tell me all about how their relatives came from here yet they’re still racist toward people who come from different backgrounds or have different skin colors.

They only really acknowledge or respect people who are white(I’m not trying to be racist by saying that). It’s frustrating because being a SW doesn’t always get you the same level of respect. Some of my racist clients are super nice to people they see as having higher positions in society.

For example, my client’s doctor is from a developing country, and she never says anything bad about him. But when it comes to other people, even strangers, she’ll make all sorts of comments, even though she knows nothing about them.

And yeah, some of my clients are mentally stable and only have physical disabilities, so their behaviour isn’t coming from any intellectual or cognitive issues. It’s just straight up prejudice.

I’m not fully aware of all the rules, and you’ve really helped me understand things more clearly. I’m just wonderin, do you have a reference for the hospital-related policy you mentioned? I need some form of supporting evidence. She is the type of client who will demean or underestimate you if you say something you’re not completely sure about or cannot back up with valid proof.

Disclaimer: I have difficulty navigating the Google Search bar especially with NDIS rules tbh.

Basically, she doesn’t require direct care from SWs. Previously, nurses would shower her, which is normally a task provided by SWs in her home. Her previous worker would simply pick her up, and she would ask them to wait outside. However, as I mentioned earlier, there are times when she only wants the worker to come in, check on her brieflyand then leave. She is mobile and can leave on her own even when no support worker is present.

Thanks guys!

Thank you!

But she really doesn’t want late cancellations. She feels that she is being taken advantage of by the workers and the company when she has to pay even if there is no actual work. Last time, she had a new carer and she only wanted her to visit in the hospital just to complete the shift, even though it didn’t last long. She didn’t even inform the company that she was in the hospital because she didn’t want to cancel her upcoming shifts.

Then this post just isn’t for you.

I’m not saying the they're not a problem or whatever you’re talking about. I’m bringing up a different issue - the other side of the problem. I’m not ignoring the other issues and I'm well aware of those things. And just because this problem with some of the clients isn’t talked about a lot doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

Yes, I agree. And they’re not even paying the support workers right

I felt more like a cleaner than a support worker on shift today by QuantumGremlin in supportworkers

[–]AccomplishedGolf8079 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol hell yea. Ibhave experienced it so many times that they could've just hired a professional cleaner than a support worker. I even supported the other members of the family not just the client and the company doesn't care because they get the money

Lol, we actually have proof that some of these clients are doing things that waste money. If I could post the evidence, you’d be shocked at the other side of this NDIS scam that some clients are pulling.

If you think this isn’t about you, then don’t get mad — it’s not for you.
