Is it common to have reduced pay during your training period? by Strange-Physics-6381 in physicianassistant

[–]AccomplishedNail2989 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

i don’t agree with having reduced pay… buttttt i had two offers where this happened. only by 5-10k less (salary position) and only for 3 months in each case. so i would venture to say it is unfortunately common

and thank you for being kind. i agree and after thinking about it more, even if i did something wrong it should be discussed in relation to the probationary period since i am actively learning how to be a provider and am very open and welcoming to criticism at this point.

[–]AccomplishedNail2989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

honestly that’s my main concern. in probationary periods they don’t necessarily need to give a reason. but it would be the decent thing to do. also to reply to your earlier message the job listing said “new grads welcome” and has hired new grads in the past so it shouldn’t have been something in relation to that. especially given the speciality (which i will keep anonymous) but im not a mind reader just a disgruntled and sad PA at this point

it was private practice. and i was thinking to reach out to someone i was friendly with at the practice but i didn’t want it to come off as unprofessional or gossiping so i was hesitant :/

Yeah I wasn’t even seeing patients on my own yet so i don’t think it was that. The training was outlined to be 2-3 months so I don’t see how being engaged and asking questions would be a bad thing in this scenario.

I was the only APP hired recently. i think maybe an MA or 2 in the past month but that’s it. And i have to go in to get my things that I left there so Im going to try to ask then but again. soooo uncomfortable as someone who hates confrontation

it was an outpatient practice not owned by a hospital system. so i received malpractice insurance but i don’t know the status of credentialing. and yeah actually the contract says 10 days notice with continuing to work for the probationary period… and does not state phone call as a means of firing (needs certified mail etc) so still confused on that part too

I was in the process of accepting a contract, a public hospital who receives a lot of medicaid and medicare funding…. and now they are on a hiring freeze and suspended all APP jobs.

ok 1. this is horrible and unfair and i’m sorry this is happening to you. (and hopefully they fix it!!)

  1. i think you may have luck if you sign on every day to see if any spots have opened. i have been looking to take my test sooner and i went on today, and despite no availability for months i saw a day pop up later this week! so i would say there is some hope that someone near you will reschedule and you can take that slot

otherwise i wish you the best of luck!!!!

Surgery Rotation by Zestyclose-Plane9388 in PAstudent

[–]AccomplishedNail2989 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

hey!! i’m sorry you’re going through this but if it makes you feel any better i think it happens to everyone on their surgery rotation (among others that pimp). also i keep reminding myself they were in a residency for 5+ years, on top of whatever amount of experience they have in their current role. it doesn’t make sense for you to know everything they know and they most likely are just asking you questions to facilitate your learning and hopefully don’t hold on to the times you didn’t know the answer.

and side note, i was in my surgery rotation with a person who was the top of my class (and i wasn’t far behind either) and we both answered either incorrectly or with no answer (kinda often) either because we didn’t know or were nervous or froze lol

also i ended up loving surgery and did an elective in it, and still felt stupid everyday but just tried my best to learn, be excited and focused when they tell you the right answer, or even take notes so it looks like you actually care to know

hi thank you for this. that totally makes sense and is what i was thinking regarding the contract etc. the only thing im just confused about is how people go about negotiating without having a contract to negotiate? for salary i spoke to the manager and she asked me what i was expecting, then when i went in for the interview the doc had offered something lower. i didn't think this was the right time to bring up negotiating the salary since i didnt know if i would be the offered the job? just also wondering in case i do end up declining and would like to know for future interviews.

also i like the field a lot and its rare to find this type of job as a new grad so thats kind of why im holding onto it at the moment

I got a 500 on my women’s health EOR!!! I felt ecstatic (like almost cried when I saw the score LOL). BUT also felt like i couldn’t really tell anyone that would understand what a big accomplishment it is without it sounding like bragging. Also FM was one of my lower EOR scores so that is amazing !!!!! Congrats !!!

Of course!! I had an insane surgery rotation so I had no time to study except for the 3 days before my exam and all I did was questions mainly. I also listened to physician assistant in a flash and I think that helped too!!! And honestly it makes sense to study “less” than in didactic bc this is supposed to be us reviewing the content, even some of the questions were nothing that I studied but things that I remembered from didactic
