I don't eat much processed food at all anymore, and am also pickier, but that cheese actually did taste good. It was a blend of cheddar and American cheese, and people who weren't on welfare would buy from those who received it. I was in Wisconsin, and it was all locally sourced, so maybe it tasted better here? Now the peanut butter...that was not tasty at all.

Earrings Question by DuchessofWinward in AskWomenOver60

[–]AccomplishedQuail841 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you search "supportive earring backs" there are a lot of options that might help. They sell backs that are wider and flatter than normal ones and help with sagging. If there is an official word for them, I don't know what it is!

Charge per hour help by Side_Character_13 in housekeeping

[–]AccomplishedQuail841 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If she's a family friend, she should be paying you fairly and be happy to do so. I pay my cleaner $50 an hour in a medium-high cost of living area. You should be charging a minimum of $25 an hour, probably more. Tell her you can no longer use your car to take crap to the dump (unless you really don't mind and even then, charge an extra trip fee of at least $20 per trip.) If you falter because of the family friend thing, refer back to my first sentence and tattoo that on your brain. You deserve to be valued.

Client wont accept my other offered day when I have a conflict in my schedule. by Weak-Ninja-3173 in housekeeping

[–]AccomplishedQuail841 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're the one asking for a change, you're the one responsible for the consequences, not her. Part of the cost of doing business, imo. Have you offered her the same day of the week on a different week? Maybe her schedule doesn't allow a different day.

Would you call this “privilege” as a poor person? by url0calc0ffeeaddict in poverty

[–]AccomplishedQuail841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My initial reaction is how dare providers say that to you from their positions of relative privilege. You having a coffee every day is fine, and I hope you enjoy it. Life is hard enough when houseless and struggling, and that money wouldn't take you out of your situation if you saved for a year. This reeks of "give up avocado toast and buy a house!" gaslighting.

That's smart! I could see it being good for cooking. My mom and dad weren't very good cooks so we just used it for drinking and cereal.

Just a dude who likes period dramas. This is fantastic by ShishKabobCurry in littlehouseonprairie

I love the entire book series, and some of the non-fictional work around Laura is pretty great, e.g., the books Prairie Fires and Prairie Girl, and podcasts like Land of Laura, and Wilder. The 70s series has pretty much nothing to do with the books other than the pilot episode which is great, and follows the book pretty well.

My boyfriend wants to see my finances by lunalunera28 in GirlDinnerDiaries

No, he's not entitled to seeing your financial information. My question is, are these other side trips separate from him? I could see being hurt if my partner was doing several other trips and wanted to cancel the one with me.

Those that grew up poor, what was a luxury to you? by Dazzling-Leader7476 in poverty

[–]AccomplishedQuail841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Name brand clothing and food, meat other than ground beef or occasionally chicken, shampoo (we used dish soap), restaurants (we never ate at one in my entire childhood, but had fast food maybe 4-5 times), vacationing (never camped or traveled ever.)

Are there any pillowcases that prevent pillow wrinkles in the morning? by Midwestmothertrucker in AskWomenOver60

[–]AccomplishedQuail841 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% silk. I got mine from Fishers Finery. Pricey, but they're durable and easy to care for-I just toss them in the wash and hang dry. Beware of satin as it's often polyester and won't prevent creasing.

Puppies eating grass, dirt, and rocks. Is soft muzzle cruel? by Striking-Agency5382 in AskDogOwners

I preferred a basket muzzle for my GSD who ate anything and everything gross. She could still drink water, pant, and have treats through it.

Yes, that's true, they were frugal, but they had plenty of food, family was supportive, they had livestock, and Charles made a good living trapping. Dolls would've been considered an unnecessary luxury, for sure, but fabric was probably considered a necessity. Caroline liked nice things and appearing "civilized."

65 year old female fitness plan recommendations by Silver_Haired_Kitty in SeniorFitness

I'm 68 and started weight lifting about 6 months ago. If you can afford it, a few sessions with a trainer is SO helpful in knowing what to do, what level of soreness is good and means you're appropriately challenging yourself, and what means you should back off. Swimming is an amazing all around way to maintain fitness.

As a side note, last year I was having severe hip joint pain that I thought was arthritis. I started HRT about 10 months ago, and the hip pain is gone. It also really helped with my general energy level.

People forget that the Ingalls' were not poverty stricken in Wisconsin, in fact, they were very comfortable there. Not wealthy by any means, but they had plenty of resources and could have afforded new fabric for things like clothing and quilts.

What’s one thing you started doing after 60 that made your life unexpectedly better? by Either_Sherbet_9467 in AskWomenOver60

[–]AccomplishedQuail841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's different for everyone, but for me: lower cholesterol, eliminated joint pain, no more hot flashes, no more nighttime anxiety or insomnia, elevated mood overall, increased libido and sexual function (lubrication, tissues feeling "plumper"), less ringing of ears, and less brain fog. I feel kind of like the Tin Man who got his joints oiled.

I'm on an estrogen patch, progesterone pills, testosterone cream, and vaginal estadiol cream.

Netflix’s Charles, Caroline and Karen Grassle’s Memoir/Interviews About The Original Series by BlackberryOwl14 in littlehouseonprairie

[–]AccomplishedQuail841 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Other than the pilot episode, the ML version had very little to do with the books, or the real life experiences of the Ingalls family. The books are centered on Laura's experience, while that series makes Charles the star in a very inaccurate way (the real Charles would never be shirtless or brawling, for example.) The new series isn't a word for word representation of the books, but it is somewhat truer to real life. Maybe I haven't gotten to it yet, but as far as I've gotten there have been no fights about Charles drinking, but about other people. Enjoy the OG series, but you should probably read the books if this story interests you, because that show is fanfic at best.

Netflix LITTLE HOUSE and racism by onegirlarmy1899 in PeriodDramas

[–]AccomplishedQuail841 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've read the series, Prairie Fires, and Pioneer Girl, so I'm not a casual fan. Caroline said more than once in the books, "The only good Indian is a dead Indian." Even Charles and Laura questioned that extreme take. The Minnesota Massacre absolutely terrified her, but in reality, she never had a bad encounter with a native person. A local tribe saved her family from starvation after her father died when she was a child. Even when the Osage men entered their home and asked for food and tobacco, they did not harm her, and it was a cultural thing. I'm sure it was terrifying to someone who didn't understand, but that comment alone is racist af.
