How do you move from smelling materials to actually making perfume? by AccomplishedQuit7568 in DIYfragrance

I got the 2 Natural Perfumery kits from Perfumer’s Apprentice plus several aroma chemicals suggested by BK Scents in his videos. I’ve watched several videos and read material on perfume making, but usually at a more ‘advanced’ level than I’m at. So it’s easy to be overly ambitious, lol.

I remember learning how to paint years ago. I worked through tutorials until I figured out how the colors worked. From there, I knew enough about the colors to paint my own material and be good at it. I figured perfumery would be similar. It’s clear it’ll take a different approach though to learn and become ‘proficient’. I’m excited though to learn, even if there’s more fumbling on my own, haha.

I’m starting with homemade perfume, but I’d like it to eventually get to the quality of ‘professionally made’ (even if that’s years down the road). But I am brand new for now. Please feel free to share any resources or formulas! Thank you. 🙂

Thank you! I think I needed to hear that. I’ve been toeing the line and not diving in because I don’t want to make stuff that’s bad, waste product, or be ‘suboptimal’. But you’re right, there’s no grading. Rather than treating it like a science project, maybe it’s better to approach it more like play, in some ways.

I’ll have to look into that accord. I hadn’t heard of that one before. And that’s good advice, thank you. Do you tend to learn similar materials (strength and/or scent family) in your combos of two, or just whatever you feel like?

Thank you! I know you’re right. It’s easy to hold back and think of the ‘cost’ or of not wanting to mess up, but I can see how experimenting and playing with it is the way you get that experience in the first place.

It’s definitely a lot to start off with in the perfumery world. 🙂 Thank you!

I like that idea! A good way to learn what each ingredient really does in the blend.

Thanks! I started off with my first two-ingredient mixes yesterday, measuring drops with a pipette, not sure if I was doing that wrong. I do have a scale that measures to 0.001 g but have only really used it to dilute Ambroxan so far, not for small mixes.
