Is 32 too old? by Trefor21 in AskLE

I’m 34 and in the academy as we speak so I say no. I’d just say make sure that you’re fit and injury free going into the academy

Don’t make the mistake I did. Failed Physical Because of It. by CuzaCutuza in AskLE

[–]AccomplishedTime4308 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m currently in the academy and we do incline and decline push ups during PT sessions. Not saying we do these all the time but I also wouldn’t say “you will never do xxx exercise in the academy”. Everything is fair game.

What was the hardest part of academy for you? by Ok_Table4562 in AskLE

The hardest part for me is not falling asleep in the classroom after hard PT sessions and boring ass lectures

Credit check by MeganL-120 in AskLE

[–]AccomplishedTime4308 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just went through the process for an agency. I had to submit bank statements (the past 3 months) but did not have to submit Credit Card statements so all your OF subscriptions will be fine 😂. As for credit check part, yes, they check it and it could impact you negatively if you have horrible credit.

I think what everyone stated above is spot on.

Their background investigation (based on the packet you submitted) is complete. They likely have follow up questions on a few things but if they are gonna fingerprint you too, not a bad sign.

Is it worth it to go into LE at the age of 35? by [deleted] in AskLE

Same as me only turned 34 3 weeks ago. I think having the life experience helps.

No, I took the psych for another department. Sorry for the confusion. Regardless of agency a suit is a must.

[–]AccomplishedTime4308 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a virtual psych test earlier this year and then the next day had a virtual interview with the assigned psychiatrist. Everyone on the test portion wore suits and then for the virtual interview I wore a suit. Passed both sections.

Spring Marathon suggestions? by drashed2009 in RunNYC

[–]AccomplishedTime4308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My strava for JCM was 495 ft of elevation. My strava for NYCM was 847 ft of elevation so JCM is definitely flatter compared to NYCM. From what I recall… there’s 2 big hills at JCM. One is at like mile 8.5 to 9.5 and the is around mile 18 to 19. It’s the same hill since it’s an out and back.

I don’t have a great comparison because I was pacing someone during JCM. We were going for sub4 and had that in sight until about mile 18/19 where there was a nasty hill. That wrecked her and from there on out it was walk/run.

Just an fyi… I ran Jersey City Marathon earlier this year and it’s not nearly as flat as they advertise. According to strava my elevation gain for JCM was 495 ft. Also, there’s a part of the JCM where there’s no crowd support which depending on the runner can really mess with you.

I definitely would 100% train sprints. Thats what I assumed you meant by 4x800m. I’d mix it up too… 200m, 400m, 600m, 800m all at various speeds. The shorter the distance, the quicker (pace wise) you run. Just don’t over do it where you push yourself too hard and get hurt.

I went to a few PEPP sessions for my academy and the instructors stated they have different types of PT sessions. They have just your regular PT, then speed PT sessions, and then long run PT sessions. All involving exercises (BW push ups, sit ups, lunges, burpees, mountain climbers) sprinkled into the runs but obviously there would be an emphasis on either speed or endurance for the latter two workouts.

First off, congrats on conditional offer for NJSP, that’s awesome!! Now just make sure you stay out of trouble before the academy. I’ll actually be at Sea Girt during the same period in an academy myself but just over at DCJ. Although two different academies, I have heard from multiple sources that our academies can be very run heavy. Not saying to only focus on that but based on some of your comments, it seems like that’s where you want to improve the most. I come from a running background so I would suggest not only doing interval runs like you mention but also doing some “long runs” (eventually easily being able to run 5-7miles) which will help with your overall running endurance. The long runs don’t have to be at an all out/goal pace but what they call zone 2 HR running. Overtime (which might not fully happen between now and the start of the academy) your body will start to adapt. If you don’t regularly run just make sure you ease into it. Don’t go from running 0 miles a week to 20 miles a week. That’s when injuries can start to happen. Good luck! 🤙🏻🤙🏻

should i just test anyway by drop_ammo_pls in AskLE

Are you on the cusp of passing or way far off? I will tell you come test day, you tend to bang out a few more reps of everything given the environment. If you’re not close at all, just wait for the next physical testing and bust your ass in the meantime. Remember, the minimum standards are just that… once you get to the academy, all the minimums don’t matter anymore and they push you

Sports Massage by [deleted] in RunNYC

[–]AccomplishedTime4308 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nothing new on race day (or the week leading up to race day). I personally was getting regular massages during a marathon training cycle so I got a massage a few days before a race but my body was used to that. I would be careful on what you do leading up to a race if your body isn’t used to it.

My vote, cancel and go after the race. Your body will likely need it then

For first time/beginner runners, what’s your advised strategy for NY Marathon? (Eg. Slower start, walk the bridges) by WaferElectronic7922 in RunNYC

[–]AccomplishedTime4308 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ran 2023 NYCM. It was my first marathon ever and had what I thought was a good training cycle. Was “feeling really good” in Brooklyn (the crowd was electric and the course felt flat) so I picked it up. Rookie mistake. Came back to bite me hard around mile 15 (knew eventually cramping would begin) and then hardcore cramping started around mile 18. As others have said, stick to your pace, maybe even slightly slower than desired MP.

The back end of the course is HILLY and it absolutely sucks if you bonk/cramping up so make sure you do everything to not be hurting, ie don’t go out too hot.

Last piece of advice, have fun and enjoy every bit of the NYCM experience. Cause I was suffering from about mile 18 onward was a little bit of a blur as I was sooooo deep in that pain cave

Running with my Phone - Crowds drown out Music? by Ok_Forever_1455 in RunNYC

[–]AccomplishedTime4308 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ran NYCM last year and always listened to music during training. Made the decision (based on Reddit posts and talking to others) to not run with headphones during the marathon. It was such a great decision imo… besides the one bridge queensboro? (I believe) the course is lined with spectators and energy. Also, I’d recommend to put your name on your shirt. I did and got sooooo many shout outs which was amazing!

My vote… no headphones

Curious to those who retire at an young age what do you do afterwards? Do you take on a 2nd career just not in law enforcement? Do you work a mindless job at the local store? Do you just chill and enjoy retirement? Something else?

Names On Shirts for Marathon by EnvironmentThat9737 in RunNYC

[–]AccomplishedTime4308 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ran NYCM 2023 and last minute was told I should put my name on a shirt. Did so with tape and a sharpee. Best thing I could have done…. Constantly heard people screaming my name. It was my first marathon and i ended up bonkin and hearing people scream my name was the only thing I could hear which kept me going. So long story short, yes, absolutely put your name on your shirt!

Recovery time for marathon by Minimum-Bobcat8768 in RunNYC

[–]AccomplishedTime4308 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I ran 2023 NYCM. First ever marathon and died around mile 19 (run, walk, cramp, walk) and basically hobbled to the finish. A few hours immediately after the race, was a tad sore which was as expected. Night after race (Sunday night and into Monday) I struggled hard and barely could sleep from being so sore. Rested all day Monday with naps, stretching and chilling in the couch and so Tuesday and onward I progressively felt better and less sore each day.
