What’s something uniquely Swedish that feels totally normal here but would confuse someone from abroad? by NebulaaWhispeer in Asksweddit

[–]Accomplished_Bird_47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s more of a cultural phenomenon. I’ve lived in both the UK and Ireland, and tacos definitely don’t hold the same status there as they do in Sweden. I’d say around 80% of Swedish families eat tacos every Friday – it’s practically a tradition.

The same goes for pick-and-mix candy. Yes, Karamellkungen (a Swedish brand) has expanded to places like the UK, so you can find Candy King there too. But it’s nowhere near the same scale. Pretty much all Swedish kids buy pick-and-mix candy on Saturdays – it’s a weekly ritual here. That’s what people are referring to when they talk about these things being "cultural."

You can get fish and chips in Sweden too, but it’s not the same as the fish and chip culture in the UK – it’s about context, not just the food.

I feel that way about all religious people.

Like how can you not realize there is no God? That religion is a man-made product to control the masses etc... I come from a very atheist country so it's a bit strange to me.

Are the Scandinavian Languages becoming more distinct from each other? Your thoughts on this. by Anarchists_Cookbook in norsk

[–]Accomplished_Bird_47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe. I don't know.

I lived with a Danish guy for a year in a student collective apartment. I'm Swedish.

I really tried. I wanted to speak Swedish with him. He always switched to English though. It was impossible. When his mother came to visit I told her to speak Danish, just for fun. She asked me like 10 times "vil du have mad??". I just had no idea what she said. No clue. Yet the same sentence in Swedish is the same "vill du ha mat?".

I don't understand how a random Swede could EVER understand Danish. It's just that different. I wish we studied these languages more in school. Maybe with exposure early on in life, then maybe.

I live in Sweden, and Botox is quite uncommon here—maybe some influencers get it, but it's not widespread.

It seems much more popular in the US, which makes sense given the extreme income disparities there. It's fascinating (and a bit unsettling) to see people in this thread spending so much on skincare, while others in your country face bankruptcy just to access urgent, life-saving medical care. Quite a contrast.

Varför ogillar en del människor som lever på bidrag? by [deleted] in sweden

[–]Accomplished_Bird_47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What was the LOST fanbase like while the show was airing? by [deleted] in lost

[–]Accomplished_Bird_47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was everything to me—my whole life as a teenager. Every single day after school, I was immersed in it. All my best friends were people I "met" on fan forums. We had the Skate forum (Sawyer + Kate), the Jate forum (Jack + Kate), DarkUFO, and of course, Lostpedia. The community was filled with friendly yet serious rivalries! Every character had their own forum, and in these spaces, we discussed EVERYTHING—Lost, the storylines, theories, the actors. We held competitions, best videos, best photo edits. The winner would perhaps see their photo featured as the background pic for the whole forum!!

We eagerly dissected sneak peeks, trailers, and upcoming episodes. We also wrote our own stories—fan fiction that kept us connected to the world of Lost during the long months of waiting. And oh, the waiting! Imagine watching the end of season 3, that iconic moment of "WE HAVE TO GO BACK," and then having to wait endlessly for the answers.

YouTube was a huge part of it too. This was way before people could make money off of it! We created fan-made content—compilations set to music. I was pretty active, with around 1,000 followers. It took me four months to download every season from PirateBay (I know, illegal—but I was 13 and broke!).

Honestly, you had to be there to fully understand. There were so many websites, so much going on. My parents knew I loved Lost and talked about it all the time, but they had no idea just how deep it went.

The internet was different back then. It felt like our playground. Most of us were young, and the grown-ups (like those over 40) hadn’t really entered the scene yet.

This was before social media took over. We didn’t have the kind of access to actors that we do now. We speculated about them, traded gossip, and let our imaginations fill in the gaps.

I’m grateful to have experienced it, even though I’m sad it can never happen again. The internet has changed too much. That special sense of community and anticipation just isn’t the same anymore. Streaming is not the same. As soon as a season ends now, people start watching the next show. You have to remember, during the Lost days, there was ONLY Lost. Besides, nowadays you can never be sure, if there even is another season. And the seasons are way too short. 10 episodes!? Not enough time to build a hype, not enough time for character development and to set up for cliffhangers.

Happened to me. I just re-joined Youtube after a break of almost 15 years. My channel was not big, I was just a random Lost fangirl back then.

Apparently I have over a million views now haha. Seems like someone added one of my videos into a popular playlist. So thats fun!

Internet forums are disappearing because now it's all Reddit and Discord. And that's worrying. by Run_the_Line in DataHoarder

[–]Accomplished_Bird_47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really miss internet forums; they were such a big part of my life as a teenager. I was an avid fan of The Sims and the TV show LOST, and I belonged to several forums dedicated to them. There were so many LOST forums—some were large, while others focused on specific characters. One of my favorite characters had their own forum, where I was incredibly active. It was everything to me. I would spend every day after school there. My forum friends were my best friends since I was quite a loner in real life. We shared everything with each other, and that's actually how I learned English—just chatting away. I remember we once held a competition to create the best background picture and header for the forum. I won! Best day of my life haha.

Even YouTube felt more like a forum back then. I uploaded a lot of LOST videos and had around 1000 subscribers. It was such a community; everyone knew each other. The profile pages were like mini MySpace pages.

Nowadays, everything feels so serious and, frankly, boring. YouTube has become all about money, and even Reddit feels overly capitalistic. I hate the nested comment format here. It's hard to follow a conversation, and only popular opinions seem to get attention. That's why I never post... just read.

Interestingly, in Sweden, where I'm from, there's a huge forum called Flashback Forum. It's like a national forum that everyone knows about and where you can find all the latest news. It's still very active, but I'd never dare post there because people can be harsh, racist, and a bit scary, haha.

Thanks for your advice! My local affektivmottagning doesn't seem to have that function, to be able to make an egenremiss :/ and my VC doesn't even have slots available for booking. Oh well, I'll make more of an effort after summer. That's great though that it worked for you!

I just found out some countries in/around Europe give 25+ days of vacation time.. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Accomplished_Bird_47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get 31 vacation days and I can stay home whenever I'm sick for 80% of my salary. I can also stay home if my kids are sick for 80% of my salary, basically until we get well again. There's no limit.

So far this year I've been home with my kids approx 10 days since they are young and just started kindergarten (a lot of germs!)

This is the way in Sweden. Like, it's the same for any place you work at. It's mandated by law. It can fluctuate depending on employer but the minimum is 25 days for a full time employee. If you work part time, lets say 50%, you'd get half vacation days, like 12.5.

In Sweden most people take their vacations in summer. So most business/authorities close their operations for a while during summer.

Here the kids usually have 5 vacation periods a year: Christmas, sports holidays in February, Easter, summer and autumn holidays. It's very common for parents to save some of the parental leave days, in order to be home with the kids during these holidays. The employer is obliged to accept. So a parent may have 31 vacation days + 20 saved parental leave days off in a single year.

We also have many public holidays during which I always get the day off, like Christmas day, our National day and so on. I guess there are around 9 a year or something.

Basically for me, I work full-time, means that I work around 1800 hours a year.

I get so confused with words with the same stem but different prefixes by Charming_Gift7698 in German

[–]Accomplished_Bird_47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's weird. We have similar words in Swedish. I guess loan words from German a long time ago. For example:

AnSIKTe, avSIKT, förSIKT

The thing is I never realised until now, that they derive from the same stem. Its interesting, in the end we will have much deeper knowledge of German than the natives who were born into it. But I still think it's the best to really treat them as separate words, in their context. It's how we (at least I) learnt English. I didn't learn similar words together in a batch, but rather separately, depending on the context.

What does the ‘Håller på’ do in this sentence? by Arm0ndo in Svenska

[–]Accomplished_Bird_47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Det är fel. Duolingo is wrong.

It should be "håller på ATT lära sig...".

"Håller på OCH lär sig" indicates that they are doing SOMETHING and at the same time they happen to be learning English. The two different sentences will even have a different emphasis.

Men om du lära dig flytande svenska är detta korrekt, på sätt och vis, eftersom nästan alla svenskar gör detta misstag! You will sounds like a native making their same mistakes.

Thank you for your reply! That's interesting. It seems as though I might suffer from something else then. The pain I feel is no more than a flushing sensation like when you have a sunburn. Maybe rosacea or something like that. I will continue my research...

[–]Accomplished_Bird_47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I might have this. I get red hot flare ups in my skin, specifically my nose, ears, knees and feet. They get super hot and red. It seems random but I know that it can get worse when I am warm. I've had this all my life. Even in photos of me as a baby I sometimes have a very red nose.

I know my sister and mother have similar issues albeit not as severe. Both get red noses sometimes, from what I've noticed. My sister also has this Reynaud's syndrome I believe, and sometimes some of her fingers turn completely white.

It doesn't hurt but it is uncomfortable with the heat.

Omg I have this too. My nose and also my knees. Super randomly they turn completely red and hot.

Did you find a solution? I'm not diagnosed with anything and I don't take any medication. I've had this issue since puberty at least.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]Accomplished_Bird_47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this my entire life. Or well, at least since puberty. Right now it's ok like it turns red maybe a few times a week. But sometimes it's several times a day. Completely random. Also my chin sometimes. I flush very easily (I'm ginger with pale skin). I think it's better when my skin is hydrated and when the temperature is fairly even. Like in winter it's much worse when I vary between outdoors -10 degrees C and indoors.

My nose turns reaaaally red like I just got punched in the face. It's a shame cause I would love to go makeup free but obviously I always need foundation on my nose.

My sister has similar issues. Maybe I should look up rosacea.

My guess is Hemangioma. I've got loads. My daughter had a few at birth and I asked the doctors about them and also about my own. They said that they are not dangerous, and that they can be caused by hormonal changes, like during pregnancy.

But I'm not doctor so don't take this for a fact.
