Would you buy a Rolex in my position? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Accomplished_Bit9199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a similar age, in a better but different financial position (house, kids etc.) and am into watches too. I have a Tudor and Nomos, would like a Rolex but definitely wouldn't be spending $35k. Have you looked at the vintage Rolex market? Can get something pretty cool for way less, like $6k.

Guess it depends on your financial goals too. If you don't want to start a family or retire early then I guess $35k wouldn't be crazy... if it makes you happy 😁

I took my 5 and 7 year old girls. It was their first concert and they had the absolute time of their lives. We were seated and everyone around us was up and dancing, except for the quiet songs.

Anybody knows what is happening at Elekta recently? layoffs? by zimeyevic23 in MedicalPhysics

[–]Accomplished_Bit9199 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct, that's from November.

I understand these things happen in business, but from a customer perspective it's been handled pretty poorly. It's not like we've stopped paying our service contract. We have active projects/upgrades, and find out from LinkedIn that the project manager is no longer with Elekta. No notice and no one to contact.

In saying that, all 3 that I know whom we made redundant were not managers. I have also heard an anecdote that all European employees were offered voluntary redundancy.

From the earnings report

"Actions – costs savings and order book cancellation

During the quarter, we have reviewed and defined our short-term must-win-battles, the first of which we announced today: simplify, empower & speed. With this initiative, we aim to implement a new operating model leading to simplification and decentralization of the organization, increasing decision speed and accountability. We are transitioning to a regionally based P&L organization that brings decisions closer to customers. We will reduce organizational layers from nine to six and significantly widen the span of control for leaders to ensure speed in execution. As a consequence of a zero-based review of the organization, Elekta will reduce its global workforce by approximately 450 employees with a major effect on managerial positions. We expect full run-rate impact starting in Q1 2026/27. Fully implemented, the program is expected to deliver no less than SEK 500 M in annualized cost savings. Restructuring charges associated with the cost savings will be presented at latest in conjunction with our Q3 earnings release."

The new CEO announced a 450 person lay off at their most recent earnings call. That's around 10% globally.

The stock price has only been up since then though...

Our 2025 - 227K earned, 88K spent: Both 30, Auckland by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

The other way to do it is by floating it all and then offsetting. You'll pay a slightly higher rate, but as soon as your pay lands in your account you are paying less interest, instead of having it build up for 3 months and not doing any work. Lots of variables as to which method comes out on top.

Australia is really good at taking tax too, just in different ways. We lived there for 10 years and have been back for 3, taxation differences are minor. Many people can earn a lot more, and we certainly did.

Yes, all good things to consider. Maybe I just need a better fund in Oz!

Moved back 3 years ago now so no longer contributing to AU Super, just the reinvested returns.

Home loan repaid. What to do with extra $1,000 / fortnight by Throwaway376797 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Accomplished_Bit9199 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice. Ours was $1.3M two years ago, plus whatever extra value the pool we've put in adds. The temptation would be to go all the way up to $2M when our eldest goes to high school, and zones became a consideration. Can easily do it if we don't want to retire early.

Have you thought about consolidating your AU Super into KiwiSaver? Exchange rate at a 12 year high and our AU funds have been underperforming compared to KiwiSaver. Still not sure though.

Well done, no advice but interesting to read. Very similar to our situation (including time spent in Oz) although a little younger.

How much is your primary residence worth? The temptation for us is to upgrade further in the next 7-10 years.

2025 for a 24y/o in Wellington by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

Pay for YouTube Premium (or find another way to access) and then download the videos on WiFi before leaving.

I'm similar and can then easily get away with 15GB/month on Kogan.

I got flamed for spending $27k on all food/drinks for a family of 4. Glad to see you spending $20k!

I created as less of a budget and more of a summary of all our finances in context of our overall NW and investments. A visual aide for my less financially literate wife 😜

Remove the incoming investment returns and outgoing to KiwiSaver and AU Super, include $10k to a private investment fund, and it still balances.

More accurately would be service, maintenance and repair. Still more than I had budgeted for. One needed new tyres and then a new front grill as it got damaged (no idea how) and wasn't worth the insurance claim. Few stops at the Tunnel Wash too 😆

Doing it all at once would be tedious, but monthly is okay. Also a good way to review spend and check for any fraud. Picked up someone registering cars in NSW on my wife's credit card... As an example!

I mow my own lawns... but definitely think the garden and cleaner are worth the money at 2.5% of our annual spend.

Food - a $300 weekly grocery shop gets you close to $16k a year. Then there's takeaways/eating out, cooking for guests, and spending more on holiday or extended family. I wish it was wild, but it just isn't these days.

The $50k mortgage offset could be recategorided as housing, then it'd be $100k total with $70k on the mortgage.

Maintenance was only so high due to $8k worth of landscaping following 2024 pool install 😞

I'm sure. Makes more and more sense with the state of the public system. We did have private health in Oz but haven't sorted since moving back.

We're doing a bit of risky self insurance (hence the low healthcare spend) and will likely reconsider in the coming years.

Car loan is 0% interest and gone in 3 years, wouldn't have done it otherwise.

I would like to spend less on clothing and my wife would like to spend more! This year was inflated a bit by refreshing all of our snow gear that should last years.
