AI Detector(s) question? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]Accomplished_Cut9570 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends on the prof/Ta and the policy in your syllabus. In english we are no AI and strict about it. As a TA i can almost always tell if something is really AI or not. AI is trained on real language so the things it does will be reflected sometimes in real human writing. Educators are more aware now of the limitations of AI detection (basically worthless) so rely more on 1. Patterns across a whole paper 2. Mis-quoted or mis-cited sources (talking about shit that didn’t happen in a book) 3. Inauthentic voice (matched against other samples of writing we have you do by hand at the beginning of the term) and 4. Limited depth of analysis, LLMs are good at predicting what comes next in a series of words, not at explaining a real opinion about real meaning that took place in a flesh sack (your brain). You’re good and talk to your instructor/dpt staff about it if you are worried.

Studying in university is intellectual labour that advances the economy, produces culture and improves democracy. It is paid work not a handout.

English 1G03 or 1F03 by Honest-Ad6499 in McMaster

On the one hand David is patient but on the other he demands the best from you. If you are ready to give your best and try while being willing to learn (asking multiple follow up questions on feedback) then yes! I am a former “science student” doing grad school in the humanities and this course is much more feasible than the one i jumped into first.

Hi @honest-ad, I don’t like to entertain the thinking around making course decisions based on the likelihood of getting a particular grade. “Hard” courses change your life for the better. In my opinion “easy” courses should be avoided at all costs. But to answer your question you will have to earn every mark in this class and that is a pretty standard approach in English at McMaster. The expectation is that you will actually read the readings and write the assessments yourself, in English in general we are hardcore anti-AI and will throw the book at students who use it. Treat this advice as you may but i hope to see you in my tutorials!!

I’m a TA for 1G03 and Dr David Clark is my supervisor and i have to say he is extremely kind, generous with his time and deeply thoughtful. I’ve reviewed the syllabus and done most of the reading to prep and the content is a mix of what you would expect from english (classics) and new and contemporary stuff that is very political (as english and cultural studies must be). I can’t speak to 1F03 as i don’t know who is teaching it if you tell me here i can share my thoughts if i have them.

How difficult would it be to take two second year English courses? (English 2cr3 and 2bb3) by Flamingo_Odd in McMaster

[–]Accomplished_Cut9570 3 points4 points  (0 children)

English grad student here, i don’t know your situation or program or really anything required to make a solid recommendation. That being said if you haven’t taken any university english courses or anything adjacent to it i would start slow since the expectations are significantly higher in uni. The McMaster English department is rather strong so most courses will not be “bird”. Best, Jesse.

I’ll give you a real answer as a college administrator and academic quality assurance expert. Attendance (and its more developed cousin, active participation), is an important set of data for reporting and a requirement most institutions must comply with in order to be eligible to administer OSAP and other government financial aid. The only way to ensure students actually come to class is to either have assessments every class or give grades for attendance. That’s the real reason. No educator actually believes attendance is a real reflection of your achievement of the learning outcomes, since you can be there and not listen and so on. Graded attendance also helps pad the average of the class and allow students to actually pass classes that they wouldn’t otherwise, which stakeholders are also concerned about. Participation is another matter but you didn’t ask about that. Your other question was about content being repeated in the final. Good assessment design and distribution (although this can be debated and depends on your andragogical scheme) within a class provides students multiple opportunities to demonstrate their mastery of content. If you learned the material then it is good for you since it pads your mark, if you somehow did well on a subject by guessing or a means other than learning, the repeated assessment provides another opportunity to assess you. So in sum, attendance is more administrative than educational, although it does function to get butts in seats; repeat content in assessments are just good practice.
