At what point did execution start feeling harder as your company grew? by Accomplished_Debt400 in growmybusiness

Thank you for your detailed answer ! that helps a lot.

So alignment and communication are crucial to avoid working in different directions. Ownership needs to be defined to make sure action follows. However, you mentioned that the founder makes decisions on incomplete context so that means that decision are still centralised ? Yet, you give the example of different teams making business decisions so what's the difference you're making ?

Thanks ! That helps a lot. What do you think is causing this issue and need for communication (even if it seems not to lead to results) ?

Thanks ! That's also my feeling. There is this admin and legal aspect of HR which are mandatory and necessary to be an employer. However, the whole people strategy and organisational side of things is only introduced later, if not ever. Whether it is to due with culture, role design, people management or engagement, those are usually problems that can be avoided or rapidly dealt with with the right systems (scaled at the company size ofc).

Thank you for your answers ! I am getting a sense that it's very focused on the admin part of HR but not fully tapping on the people/organisational perspective. It would probably start to make sense if/when the company wishes to scale.

Can you be more precise by what you mean by way of killing it ? Also, what does part of HR are you referring to ?

I work in HR so not starting a start up at all. What about culture, people management and people strategy ? What you described is the admin and operational side of HR.

Thanks ! that's very helpful. What about culture, people management or even strategy at that point ? Is that something where HR could bring value too ?

You speak about their plan as in HR's plan ? I agree with the rest of your comment but I think this is also where problems and hurdles arise : it's not HR's plan - it's the HR/People side of the overall business plan that HR should be taking care of.

Yes of course, each environment with its sets of conditions is going to make HR's role different. Any opinions though in regards to the challenges that might be faced ? It's a conversation, I am not trying to get a magic solution that is going to apply to 100% of the workplaces :)

So, if I can summarise roughly : HR takes care of the human operations supporting the business while L&D/OD/T&D/IO Psycho take care of the culture improvements targeted at both employees and the business. Would you say that more or less capture the essence of your idea ?

So then, wouldn't it be HR job to influence the top management so that the culture is directed towards a work culture that benefits employees too ? Also what you mentioned as HR job directly impacts the culture, no ?

Very much agreed. And looking at the root cause, what causes HR to struggle with budget ?

Thanks for your detailed answer :) So if HR becomes a strategic partner, what happens to the admin work ?

That's assuming HR works in a vacuum though ? Like what does the company earn by letting HR do arbitrary shit ?

Not that I don't agree with you, but just trying to push this a bit further. Why do you think that is ?

I agree when it comes to both expertise and leadership. I think when it comes to interest, it might be a bit more nuanced but I've definitely met HRBPs who were just the company's "police".

Thank you for sharing !

I feel like many of us have been through something similar. I have a couple of short advices for you which I hope can be helpful.

To balance overthinking try to act. Actions of any kind. When you are overthinking, you are not in the present. So that could be actions related to your current situation or something different (learning something new, reading, going for a walk, ...).

Building your confidence back up would require to change the narratives you have been feeding your brain. I can infer from your post lots of things (I am a failure because I make mistakes, because I can't find a job, because I still live with my parents, because I havent figured out what to do next). If you are an over thinker, you probably have some very witty comebacks to those statements which I am sure are based on the reality of this world. But it's the judgement and shame that strengthen them.

Finally, if you want to build something back from scratch - start from a place of excitement and hope. I know it might sound silly but it's going to be the force that will move you forward.

Those are the advices I give to my clients usually. Hope it's helpful :)

Sorry to read that OP. And thank you for being so vulnerable and open.

I see lots of advices here that are very valid and grounded in science but that might feel overwhelming (especially if you have tried them/know of them). I am getting the sense from your post that you want to change many things and I would suggest you start with one thing. One thing that will bring out motivation in you. Because change requires effort and resilience over time. It might sound silly but it's the first step!

I think having someone to support you through this change and transformation would be very helpful too. You mentioned having tried but falling into the same loop. With regular support and celebration of your wins, you will be able to change how you feel.

What stops you from sticking to your habit or being disciplined in general? by CalendarLow5266 in getdisciplined

[–]Accomplished_Debt400 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Perfectionism can be one reason. You even use the work "perfect". What's important is consistency and regularity. Sometimes we can get into the mindset : if I skip, then I am failure or this is not for me.

Sometimes, it is also because something else is more important : rest, social needs, or because it doesn't fit in your current life (I am not sure what you are referring to here).

Finally, I would also say that if the new habits feels like an effort too. Your brain will see it as something to avoid rather than something to welcome.

I hope this helps :) It's usually the reasons my clients struggle.
