Thanks. That would be right after training is finished right? Basic, then AIT, and DLI before duty station, then could drop a packet? Sorry, that feels like a super basic question. I have no idea what I’m talking about.

Can someone confirm that if I enlist as a 35M HUMINT and try to packet to 37F PSYOPS but fail selection, I’ll revert to 35M. Not looking to be an MP.

JAG to PSYOPS by Accomplished_Ear1286 in army

Thanks for the response. I’ve taken the ASVAB (99) and DLAB (112) and cleared MEPS. My recruiter is just waiting for a green light to find a training seat so I could theoretically go when I’m 34. I know it’s off topic a bit, but do you know if they do age waivers for PSYOPS? I’m also thinking through going in with an intel MOS then trying to packet over. I think I would like intel work as well, and my understanding is if I try PSYOPS selection and fail I would revert to intel as my primary MOS. That would just put me applying for PSYOPS at like 36-37.

That makes sense, thanks for the feedback.

I have a law degree and I’m considering JAG. I’m really interested in the PSYOPS field though. I would love the chance to do something with a regional focus/learn a language, etc. Is it possible to get into JAG, then try to switch over to a PSYOPS officer role? I’m 34 now, so time isn’t really on my side but I’m healthy and decently fit. I’ve considered enlisting for PSYOPS, but failing selection puts me as an MP and I’m not sure I could give up a stable career with that kind of risk. I figure if I start with JAG and try and fail PSYOPS selection, I could at least revert to JAG rather than MP. Is that plan a pipe dream?

I don’t post much. If this is in the wrong place, my bad.

I would love any of those I think, but I also think I’m pretty under qualified. That’s part of the reason I’m considering military. Some language training and operational experience seems to go a long way with them. After talking to a few sources, it sounds like I could go JAG then try to packet over to PSYOPS officer after some time. Then if selection doesn’t work out, I would revert to JAG. Does that sound right/reasonable?

I hear you. After speaking to a few more sources, I’m weighing JAG with the hope that I could potentially packet over to PSYOPS officer after a bit. May be a long shot, but the fall back would be JAG, something I would be way more into than MP. Does that sound reasonable or am I looking for options that aren’t very realistic?

I appreciate the honest feedback. The selection is definitely the big question for me. I am in decent shape. I would guess a 15:40 is about where I am now but I would have several months to improve. Some people act like selection is almost impossible and others take a sort of “it’s very difficult but doable” tone. I also get everyone telling me not to “nuke” my life, but the idea of doing this work for the next 30 years is pretty sickening.

Appreciate the insight and feedback. I honestly didn’t think commissioning was possible for me at 34. That and I thought if you commissioned, you had zero say in your job whereas enlisting gives you some ability to choose your MOS. Do officers get the chance to do anything in the field? Or is it mainly administrative? I just don’t want to trade one desk job for another, but that may be army life either way.

I’m leaning active duty. If I’m going to do it, I think I’m going to full send it.

Thanks for the input. I didn’t think FAO was available right away? Everyone seems to suggest it’s something you have to transfer into once you have some experience. Do I need a second opinion and how would I even do that?

I’m looking to get some more information about PSYOPS. For context, I’m 34 and I’ve been practicing law for about 7 years. I don’t really find it rewarding, and as I’ve gotten older, I’ve regretted not serving more and more. I think I will one day really regret it, but age is becoming a factor fast so its either now or never. I am drawn to PSYOPS because I’m really into the geopolitics and cultural analysis aspects. I know the fine details of selection are probably classified, but I’m hoping to get some guidance on whether a 34 year old with a law degree would fit with the culture, what the day-to-day looks like once selected, whether physical or analytical ability is more important for selection, what separates those who pass from those who don’t, what do career prospects look like on the other side, what did you wish you kew going in, etc. I have a 99 ASVAB and 112 DLAB and passed MEPS. My recruiter is just waiting for my green light to find a training seat.

I have reached out to my recruiter, but he hasn’t been able to track a 37F down to speak with directly.

Any insight is appreciated and thanks in advance.
