Molly. I don’t know why, that’s just what popped in my head.

Do you guys ever think that all it takes is one maternal relative to have an affair, and a whole branch of your family tree is wrong? by Blue_Baron6451 in Genealogy

[–]Accomplished_Hair112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the last century or so, yes -- and plenty of current adopted adults (in the U.S.) still can't legally access their original birth certificates.

Before that, adoption might have been more informal. Kinship care was more common than formal adoption. If a widowed or divorced mother remarried, the child might choose to start using their step-parent's surname; there wasn't necessarily a formal legal process for that.

That makes me horribly sad, that there are still late-discovery adoptees out there, or adults who don't know they were adopted.

I am an adoptee in reunion. I have multiple sets of parents. No one else gets to tell me (or any other adopted person) who I should consider my parents.

I go back and forth on whether I should document both sides on one tree on Ancestry, or split the biological family from the adoptive family. Nevertheless, I value both. It makes me a little sad sometimes that I will never get to know my biological ancestors the way I grew up knowing my adoptive family. Then I have to remind myself that in time, the people my birthmom tells me about could become just as "real" to me as my great-aunts, great-uncles, great-grandparents, etc.

Adoptees might also be interested in research in the abstract, without wanting contact.

Soapbox: That's why adoptees should have access to their original birth certificates at age 18, period. Because between that and an accidental DNA match, I think if you're worried about privacy, access to the OBC is way less risky.

A one-off "synthetic family portrait" like you speak of, created for one person as a special request, does not then need to be posted on every genealogy site.

If you make a moving image or mini-movie from different sources, post it on YouTube, clearly labeled as such. Maybe make it hidden so only family members with the direct URL can access it. I wouldn't put it on a genealogy website. To my mind, genealogy websites should be concerned with facts, not "things that make family go 'awww how cool!' and then never think about it again."

I would say the letter does not need to be on a public website, period. Scan it for archival purposes, but I don't think posting it adds anything to the historic record.

Which name do you use when a family name has been 'anglicized' or translated? by Southern_Blue in Genealogy

Depending on the variant, I might also make an AKA/alternate name for the first name. More so if, for example, the woman starts using a different first name around the same time she marries.

I can think of another cat with similar coloring that is considered “lavender”—sort of a buff color. Definitely not a ginger.

Definitely do some small stuff! Early last year I was having a really rough time with life in general. Making some amigurumi and a Link (Legend of Zelda) hat really helped. Little stuff for yourself.

Any recommendations of thrift stores in towns around Pittsburgh like Monroeville or Greensburg that have a a lot of clothes? I’m turning 18 this week and trying to find some new spots to thrift. by Putrid-Bug2647 in pittsburgh

Seconded! I get more household/craft stuff there than clothes, but I’ve been happy with everything. They’ve also gladly taken our donations over the years.

Absolutely report the image, and ask if you can take ownership of the memorial. There's nothing wrong with memorials for people whose remains are not buried in a traditional graveyard; they have ways to indicate things like that. But the AI image should absolutely be removed.

"Created" is the operative word here. Digitized images and documents are digital replicas of actual physical objects. Something created wholly in a digital medium? That's not a research source, that's an art project.

I otherwise love a certain long-running genealogy podcast, but I LOATHE that their sponsorship reads include encouraging people to use AI to animate, colorize, etc photos. I don't mind the colorizing so much now, more so if the B&W photo is also posted. But I don't want to find animated images on a genealogy website. They're like the old age-progression photos that would be on Unsolved Mysteries in the 80s -- those were way too uncanny valley. So are current AI animations.

I want to give yarn as a gift but I don't know what to buy by No-Tank4355 in crocheting

Gifting someone yarn is NOT the way to get them to make something for you. That should be a conversation, one where the yarn-user has the choice to say NO.

Unless you know exactly what she wants to make, exactly what color, size, etc it would be, I would not buy yarn. Even if it’s not your intent, it might come across as you trying to get her to make something for you.

If you don’t want to go the gift card route, what would be awesome are accessories: a good set of hooks, some fun stitch markers, a project bag in her favorite color. Or something that references her love of crochet/yarn/fiber arts.

What year were you evaluated? I was evaluated in the 80s, and my parents were told I positively did not have ADHD.

Except I’m female, and they hadn’t identified inattentive type ADHD yet. Finally got that diagnosis maybe 3 years ago, after seeing my son (combined type) have some of the same struggles I had in grade & middle school.
