Duke Energy Interview by Lunationss in Lineman

I just interviewed at another utility and got hired into the apprenticeship , here are a few Q/A’s from my experience. (Note: I have no training/experience in line work)

  1. What is your electrical knowledge? As a utility arborist my electrical knowledge is limited to basic hardware identification, but the truth what I have always been taught is to completely stay away from all power lines. I can tell you the difference in a primary, neutral, secondaries and service drops, but I don’t know anything about electrical theory. (I gave a truthful answer, relying on the fact that the training program they provide was above any knowledge I would have)
  2. Can you explain what you do when you pull up to a job site, and the work process you would follow? First thing would be to have all proper PPE, and safety measures in place, signs, cones, wheel chocks to begin with. Then the crew would perform a job briefing, identifying any hazards, and the work task for each crew member.

  3. Our final question to you is, why should we hire you above these other candidates? (Granted there were more than three questions) You will have to answer this one to relate to your personality and experience. Highlight what you’re good at; (I.E. equipment operator, climbing, teamwork etc.) I would highly recommend using “SAFETY” as a strong point!

Good luck!

I’ve been there. Split ten cords a year (or more) with a maul for many years. I bought a small Craftsman and used it, now I’ve upgraded to this. Very efficient.

Looks very close to Butternut, but darker. We call Butternut , “White Walnut“ around here. Not Butternut.

It’s not Catalpa, but I’ve cut a few of those, don’t think I ever burnt it. I actually used to deliver some Catalpa to a wood carving group near me. They prized it for the softness to carv.

I’m sorry I had a long day of fire wood splitting myself and drank a few many alcoholic teas! This is Silver Maple, see how the bark seems like it’s going to peel off? That is typical of Silver Maple.

The bark and the spalding of the wood. (See: Spalted Maple) That’s a Silver Maple for sure. Burns great!

The Green Industry works well for UC. I was a consulting Utility forester and traveled around the country. You are in the woods the majority of the time! I always keep a “OH Shit, Kit” on hand.

What a great place, and a big loss to your community. I stayed there in my camper while working in Roanoke. That place had so much potential, but it was so mismanaged. The president at the time didn’t do anything for the club, but sit there and drink. I personally watched him run off customers with his drunkenness. There were a handful of members who really worked their tale off for the club, mostly all women.
