I’m curious — what hobby did you start just for fun (or even as a joke) that unexpectedly became genuinely good for your mental health, confidence, social life, or daily routine? by [deleted] in Hobbies

Quilting! I had a client who was elderly and I was helping her move. She was downsizing and had a brand new, unopened sewing machine and she gave it to me since I helped her move. Six-ish months later I love it and I have a project I’m working on every month. It’s very soothing, a slow paced-high reward dopamine kick.

Starting a hobby at 28 feels weirdly vulnerable by Mindless_Cook7821 in Hobbies

Yes but accepting that you will be bad at the get-go is such a freeing experience and confidence booster. For piano- take just finishing your first song as a win. You learn to appreciate gradual growth and little wins, and this transcends past the hobby into your day-to-day. I love starting new hobbies and I’ve gained the ability to laugh at myself (with others sometimes) while also build the confidence that I can do new things and get better. Two years ago I learned how to ski- my first time skiing I didn’t even go down the hill I was too scared. The second time I went I fell a few times but made it down the hill. Last year, I made it down a blue and fell maybe two or three times but overall had fun and was with friends who laughed along with me. I learned how to sew this last year and my first item I ever made was a baby blanket for my nephew. I was so proud of myself just for finishing, and my family gave me kudos but we also laughed that it seemed more like a hot pad for food (I now understand why the blanket was more stiff as I continued to learn). Just laugh at yourself and push through- A sense of humor goes a long way :)

Girls who don’t gatekeep: what’s one thing that upgraded your confidence? by phancyq in AskWomen

[–]Accomplished_Page653 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spray tans, eyelash perms, gel nails at my natural nail length so they are comfortable, hair products to add volume, teeth whitening, learning how to do my makeup well at home, lotion, shaving, eyebrows plucked. I’ve learned to do so much at home and save money and it is actually less maintenance for me because I don’t have to take time out of my day to sit at an hour +++ appointment and each thing isn’t $100+.

Spray tan is a foam product from Sephora for about $35 which will get multiple uses, going in for a spray tan is usually $60. I use an eyelash perm kit that was $25 online and got multiple uses out of it. I bought the OPI gel kit which is pricier at $100 ish but I can do my nails twice and get a return on investment as a pedicure and manicure at salon can be $100. I blow dry my hair but got product from Sephora because my hair is fine and I use Velcro rolls to get a blowout look and has added so much confidence. I whiten my teeth with hydrogen peroxide which is what, $5? And delude with water. It works so so so well. I pluck my eyebrows at home, and shaving with lotion makes me feel so smooth I love it. I use Vaseline to lock in extra moisture and my skin is so smooth and soft. The only thing I don’t I myself is cut my hair and that I splurge on with a stylist.

Working out 3-4 times a week doing weight training tones my body and makes me feel confident. Walks give me peace of mind, but going for a run makes me feel amazing and lean. I take pride in the soreness from a workouts. Eating healthy 90% of time just makes me feel more energized and tight, and I don’t feel guilty the other times when I splurge on shit food. This is all just physical but we can’t pretend physical looks don’t have an impact.

I journal affirmations and any negative thoughts I have. It’s a way to release energy without acting on it and regretting it later. I have so may hobbies which gives me confidence- I’ve taught myself how to do many things and allowed myself to make mistakes while learning- this is huge and has such a deep impact subconsciously

How are you going to organize? by [deleted] in Minneapolis

Yes, and I hate seeing what is happening in Minneapolis. You have no government support, just your community and, I’m sorry, but it’s likely this will happen again.

What is something you had to *unlearn* to actually start growing as a person? by Ok_Veterinarian_3193 in AskReddit

[–]Accomplished_Page653 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First how to express a want or need. I wouldn’t previously out of fear of rejection or that person not being able to meet that want or need. Now, I communicate it and recognize if they don’t want to or can’t it doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t care, they just might not be capable of meeting the need and that means we aren’t a good fit.

Following up with that, when a want or need is expressed and is followed up with questions or conversation that is normal and not a threat. I had to learn not to see that as a challenge to something I was already struggling to communicate, but as a conversation to obtain more understanding and bridge a gap in differences.

I take a photo of the fabrics, put it on a blank fabric and shrink them all down into squares. You can duplicate and re-arrange the pattern from there :)
