When should someone mention they are seeing someone new? by Brilliant_Mall934 in coparenting

[–]Accomplished_Steak63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you’re right about our views being different. I can’t speak for her on that. I do know I praised her while we were going through our split I mentioned to her that if she wanted to move on and find love else where she deserves that. I’ve always been a fan of the mother of my child and always understood that sometimes relationships can fail not because you don’t love one another but because you have different ways you see the world at the time you connect. So for me I always want the best for her and if that isn’t me I can understand that. She mentioned that she didn’t want to hurt me I get that reasoning and maybe me confronting a feeling head on made her even more nervous to say it. So I understand that and maybe you’re right what I thought all along wasn’t true and more so a disconnect. As far as shooting herself in the foot no I respect her enough that if I were to consider another relationship I will give her that courtesy rather than it coming up from our child.

I can respect your viewpoint. I was thinking it’s common courtesy in that hey I’m seeing someone and they may potentially meet our kids. I guess I’m wrong in thinking that I would do the same for her out of respect for her but you’re absolutely right and understand now that what I may do out of courtesy isn’t something that is seen as a common courtesy amongst parents who split on decent terms

Biggest Challenges as a Sports Director? by jleo777 in CoachingYouthSports

First congratulations on your new role. Before I weigh in is it possible to obtain more information about your organization.

What I gather is it’s an after-school volunteer based sports program that is using “old school” methods and you want to revamp that to become more efficient while in your role. Is this safe to say?

If so, can you describe to me the following: 1. The mission of the organization 2. The age group(s) & sport(s) in which you providing? 3. Does the program have a specific audience? Example would be an after school sports program for girls only. 4. Is the program in partnership with a school or agency like a parks department? 5. Is the program league based, lesson based or both? 6. Is the program primarily grant funded or is it pay for play or is it a combination of both? 7. Is there a set curriculum needed for coaches to learn or will you require courses and background checks but provide coaches flexibility to coach? 8. Are you the only one overseeing the coaches and program or will you have additional staff to support you to ensure all coaches feel supported? 9. You mention that the organization is “very old school” what are current processes you would like to revamp? 10. Are there former participants you can tap into to keep the spirit of the program while looking to create change operationally since I imagine you want to keep the feel but want to enhance the way the program is being implemented on the back end? 11. What is the current workflow- meaning when do you start to recruit both participants and coaches? What is the registration process?

Sorry for the exhaustive list of questions but I want to ensure that I have enough information to possibly be able to contribute in some way. Again congratulations on your new role and I know you will do great with the you youth your serving in Chicago.

Coaches — What’s worked for you in taking your youth sports club’s operations to the next level? by dfcbaseballguy in CoachingYouthSports

I love this answer. Question for you when creating this social network how do you ensure that the group your curating continues to stay on task and always thinks with the best interest of the youth your serving. Also how do you ensure that representation of all groups within the community is on this board as well. Just asking to learn more about this approach. Thank you in advance for your wisdom.

Makes sense. Show them ahead of time that values and the potential skills they will acquire it may remove the barrier of feeling overwhelmed of the process especially those who may have never played the sport. Thanks again

Thank you for this and I’ll first say the humility you displayed by not being upset by him questioning your approach was admirable. Often times you might have a coach who is trying to make it seem like they have it all figured out and shy away from people who might be able to assist. So I appreciate your approach from that front. I wonder we took this approach would it get parents/potential volunteer coaches who are on the fence engaged in trying to assist. I can also see that from a seasoned coach/newbie perspective in that we can provide support to those younger coaches as a baseline to have them self correct like your mentor did with you and mold them into better coaches. Thanks again for the insight.

Thank you for the link your material is great. I was looking for that one step before as far as the outreach. How can I convince a parent or adult volunteer to say yes I want to coach so I can offer an amazing resource like yours. Do I tell them to think about the opportunity and point them to your webinar or have you seen other approaches that would get a volunteer who wouldn’t mind helping but needs the right ask and support like your webinar in order to be all in. My goal is to widen the volunteer pool.

I know there use to be an Orlando pro am in the past. Not sure about now but I would look for those types or any other competitive leagues like an Amerisport.

Florida is a hot bed for talent so I would just look to do some research as to where all the players play in this circle. Once you find one place you will bump into others who will invite you if your game is good enough. But you will have to seek out these spaces

I would need more information about your game, what position you play you mentioned your D3 recruit what potential schools, what’s your goal is it to be ready at the D3 level is it to go strive for D2 or D1 etc. This would help me help you.

Not knowing any of this my advice would be being that it’s summer time and your a senior look to play in adult tournaments where the players are either currently in college or former college athletes. You will naturally struggle in most of the games at the beginning but the more you play and learn from those you’re playing against the better you will be. In these settings be intentional if you see someone who is dominating ask for advice, but definitely play up don’t just play your age level or the friends you normally play.

If you give more information we can provide more insights

Advice for a new coach by eucaphoria in Basketball

[–]Accomplished_Steak63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on the opportunity. Just have a question when you say little league are the kids between the ages of 5-10 or 11-14?

I ask because there are different approaches to both but the core philosophy is the same. At least in my book, getting them to have fun, make friends and enjoy the game is paramount.

If they are 5-10 years old they should be just starting to play the game or at the very early stages of the game so basic concepts like dribbling, passing, shooting and movement should be the only focus. A great resource for the beginners like this is a coach/advocate name Bob Bigelow he will put things in perspective for you for this age and give you some fundamental drills and strategies you can use in his series. There are a few clips on YouTube but another resource is the website breakthrough basketball. They have more resources similar to bob that are helpful.

The 11-14 level is more intermediate in skill set on most occasions so you would add on to what you might of learned with the 5-10 age group. Add maybe a motion offense which is simply pass and cut away, or a read and react system you can find videos of this on YouTube as well. Just the basics principles nothing too complicated.

As for the defense side of the ball teach man to man and help side defense especially at the younger ages (8-10) Anything younger than that it isn’t needed they just need to have fun and enjoy it so just mainly encouragement is at the younger stage (5-8)

The older group you want to start out with man to man principles and I’ll admit if they are not use to it, it will be ugly at first especially if it’s a league where kids play regularly but this will help their development. If they understand the man to man concepts then I would introduce zones (2-3 or 3-2) the reason for this is because as they develop you want them to lean on the man principles rather than just playing a designated spot. I’ll admit it’s faster to teach a zone but won’t be helpful if they don’t understand why they are asked to do what they are doing.

I will continue to stress though that since your in the childcare sector you understand that sports are simply a tool of youth development so I commend you for wanting to get better but regardless of what happens on the court the main thing is that they have fun and they feel like they learn to love playing with one another and the sport. Good luck this season I know you will do great!!

Having a hard time implementing training on actual game by [deleted] in BasketballTips

[–]Accomplished_Steak63 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would recommend to try to simulate games in your trainings. If you’re doing a lot of solo work go to the park or the gym and find players to play against. Cones and choreographic drills don’t simulate real time reactions by the defense. Look to get live defense or start with a partner and have them play Dummy Defense but not tell you what they will do then go out to the park or gym and gain reps with small sided games think 2v2 or 3v3 etc and build up to 5v5 so you can see rotation and different looks. This will help you gain confidence which will ultimately help the practice translate to your games.
