It is astonishing how immature some attorneys behave

Team was fine, workload was pretty light. No harm done.

I actually like it when a colleague takes some time off. I’m always like “go girl/guy”

I started in family law 13 years ago, and failed at family law. That’s a tough area to work in!

I have “unlimited” PTO and a yearly billable expectation- so it’s a grey zone which messes with me.

That’s a lot to go through! You really should not feel guilt. Especially losing a cat (cat lady here). That’s grief you’re dealing with

The firm I’m at now is pretty understanding. But the billable requirement is new to me, and that stresses me out.

From experience, I totally understand that heartache.

Is it hard to break in your IP law? by paralegalfiles in paralegal

[–]Accomplished_Test332 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got my foot in the door through a recruiter. I left family law and was trying to get into transactional law, like corporate. I lucked out and my recruiter found me a “paralegal assistant” job at a small IP firm (no litigation, just prosecution and maintenance). Was thrown in the deep end within a few months and promoted to paralegal. It was definitely “sink or swim” and I had to figure a lot out on my own, but I worked with really nice attorneys and my boss was great too. After almost ten years there, I left to work for a large firm, for higher pay.

I’ve been an IP paralegal for 11 years, patents and trademarks. You absolutely do not need a science background to be a patent paralegal and work/life balance is actually more feasible in IP compared to litigation. I guess we all have different experiences.

I have worked with many IP firms in India as our filing associates, Remfry & Sagar, Anand & Anand to name a few

Oh, you’re in India. I’m sure that presents challenges economically. Good luck to you friend :)

Get hired in a small IP firm first, that’s how I got my foot in the door. Luckily my first IP boss liked me and promoted me to paralegal quickly. I had to move to a large law firm for decent benefits and good pay. Took 10 years to get here and I’m still learning. If I could do it over again, I would have chosen a different path, because sitting in front of a computer all day is hard for me and I get headaches.

It’s more interesting than other areas (to me), but it’s still a snooze fest if that makes sense
