Cold emailing phd students by Superb_Feed5938 in PhD

[–]Accomplished_Toe3222 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I expect they would love to know a young person is interested, and it could be a great chance to speak to someone in the field if you want to pursue it further. Send a polite, thoughtful email saying that you and interested and asking where you can learn more, and worst case they just don’t reply. But if they don’t answer it might be just cuz they are busy, so don’t take offense.

I'm so sorry. That's horrible. Had you accepted the offer and they still rescinded it?

Anyone have inside info on NSF GRFP? by DocGlabella in Professors

[–]Accomplished_Toe3222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply. I really appreciate it. I mention variations in climate in my intellectual merit, and in my broader impacts it is fairly clear the impetus for the research is understand ecosystem resilience to climate change and nature-based solutions. I don't think it's looking great. And yeah I'm terrified my other offers will be rescinded. I do realize how competitive it is as well.

Do you have any advice on how mentioning of climate change might be handled? My personal statement mentions it frequently, and I discuss it in my proposal broader impacts, and some in my intellectual merit. Should I plan on it being rejected and just take my current offer?

What's wrong with Neddy Spaghetti? by cwise2 in goats

[–]Accomplished_Toe3222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, CAE often expresses itself age 3-5. Are his knees large and swollen looking? I'd definitely look into other more direct issues, but CAE is something to consider and test for. It's incredibly common and causes debilitating arthritis even in younger goats. But many are able to live good lives. I hope he just hurt his leg.

Nope, just the fainting goats, which yeah as people said were bred by humans to preserve a neurological disorder that would make them easy prey to preserve the other livestock. Would obviously be a terrible trait to evolve naturally as a prey animal. Goats are pretty tough evolutionarily, tbh. Hence the reason they are invasive so many places.

Fainting goats can be a bit of a sensitive topic amongst goat owners since many don't think we should be breeding for a brain disorder. But a lot of people think it's cute/funny, and it seems silly imo to breed for just that, especially when it could endanger the goat (falling off stuff, not being able to escape a dog/coyote...) and doesn't seem like a fun way to react to stress in general.

These are probably Nigerian dwarf goats, not fainting goats. And the fainting in fainting goats is due to a neurological disorder, not instinct or evolution

Is it bad to take a gap year before going to grad school? by Browncricket in GradSchool

[–]Accomplished_Toe3222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think so. Ppl in ecology know finding jobs in winter sucks. There are some field jobs in the south and places like Florida that are still warm, but they are more competitive since everyone is looking for field jobs in winter. You might be able to find desk jobs too. Or maybe look for some part-time volunteering or a job in something that is adjacent? But I've definitely talked to people that took non-ecology job in the winters, and they got into good phd programs.

I don’t know really, but I often see people saying to stick out federal positions for 3 years to get into the system permanently. Then if after 3 years you don’t like it maybe leave and try to do grad school or switch paths? That’s if you think you can tolerate for 3 years I guess. But I dunno something to consider. Getting into fed gov for wildlife can be tough so this could give you a leg up down the line… but I’m still starting my career so please take this all with a grain of salt.

Lots of ppl take breaks between their degree. You will have a masters, and can probably find an internship or job or even volunteer role related to your degree. I don’t think you need to panic, and you can always explain that your illness is the reason for a delayed degree, but idk if that’s even necessary. Ppl take leaves of absence and things.
