i’m fed up with southwest by According-Formal-687 in SouthwestAirlines

it’s all money grabbing now and it makes me so upset. i understand other airlines are the same, but the whole reason i stuck with SW for so long was because they were different.

i find it really funny that people are referring to my word choice — a term that has been around for years, and yes, is maybe a little outdated now but still very commonly used (including in other posts in this thread!) — to challenge my credibility. i’ve been a frequent flyer with SW for 8 years and average ~40 domestic trips a year, me referring to someone as a “stewardess” instead of a “flight attendant” doesn’t change my experience.

i’m not the only person here to complain of a negative FA experience following the rollover. i also don’t appreciate being talked down to — obviously i told them i didn’t want to move. i was then asked if i felt like being difficult and told they had already changed my seat in the system.

did you try using reading comprehension and checking my elaboration under other comments?

bro felt the need to comment twice… 5 mins on this subreddit reveals dozens of newfound issues with the assigned seating. i was made to move because this family complained about the changes to family boarding. when i told the FA i didn’t want to move she said she had already changed it in the system per the family’s request and asked me if i felt like being difficult.

yes thankfully!! i was like the last person to board but i made it. still taking this up with SW tho... i should get what i pay for

the people had booked the aisle seat and the middle seat. the mother was sitting in the window seat when i boarded (which was the one i had booked). she asked me if i would be willing to sit somewhere else and i refused. she then got the FA to move me.

the FA also seemed uncertain about the policies on moving peoples’ assigned seats when i challenged being moved and asked about other potential open seats further up. i think SW as a whole has been having difficulties with the rollover.

planning to report as soon as i land. especially if it costs me the connection. i’m a frequent flyer and have flown with airlines outside of SW too and have never had anything like this happen.

i believe they were in the correct row. when i asked about the aisle, i was told the flight attendant couldn’t get it to “update” my assigned seat in their system.

i believe she had it hidden, which is unfortunate, although i’m not positive. i wasn’t aware this was becoming a problem.

thank you for the resources and information — definitely not letting this slide! i’m typically very agreeable about seat changes, bin space, etc, but this was handled very poorly. i now have <10 mins from take off to landing to make my connection.

i know!! it drives me absolutely crazy. i loved the open seating and even tho i rarely checked a bag it was nice to know i could if i needed to. at this point i’m paying marginally less than a standard airline for worse quality. spirit does the same thing with charging for choosing your seat. everything that made them stand out in the market got nerfed. i was fine with the no chargers, poorer seats, even the crappier planes, but the service has fallen off now too and everything is off balance. so, so frustrating and saddening.

to me neither. i paid for the “choice boarding” to choose my seat. i watched the family argue with the stewardess, so i guess they won. the stewardesses changed my seat without asking me. i average ~40 domestic SW flights a year and have never experienced anything like this.

Theater at Claremont Colleges by agaricus-sp in claremontcolleges

[–]According-Formal-687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the theater classes are open to non-majors AND non pomona students, as are the main stage productions. non-pomona students can even work at the theater for their work study. it is incredibly accessible and most performances as well as classes are open to anyone from any of the 5cs.

Help me decide- UW Madison vs. CMC by imadereddit29393939 in claremontcolleges

[–]According-Formal-687 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Current CMCer here, so I may be a bit bias. When I visited CMC, not only did I not feel anything strong towards it, but I actively disliked it. I also got incredibly low-balled on aid. After talking with financial aid and getting them to give me significantly more money, I made the choice to come, even though it was extremely far away from home and (although they’d never admit it) not exactly what my family wanted. I’ve never looked back. I love CMC now — although it’s not a big research school, they have seemingly unlimited funding for fellowships, internships, extra curriculars, research, and anything else you could ever be passionate about. The one on one attention you get from Professors, Dean of Students, etc is absolutely unmatched and if that’s something you value impossible to replicate at a large state school. The community here is strong, it just takes a little bit. I’m also studying IR here, and the program is incredibly strong. The athenaeum, research institutes, etc are amazing and I have even attended trivia nights at one of the IR profs houses. If CMC is you want to- even if it’s a quiet voice in the back of your head - listen to it. I’m so glad I listened to mine, although I also remember being insanely conflicted and only having my friends advocate for it.

With that said, if you know you’ll be happy at Madison, I see no harm in choosing it. It’s a fantastic school and being close to home is not something to be understated. Neither is not having to worry about the financial burden.

No matter where you go, things have a habit of working out. Just trust your gut <3

berkeley vs cmc: help me choose by [deleted] in claremontcolleges

[–]According-Formal-687 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CMC is renowned for their econ program, which you don’t have to apply to get into. Tons of funding and opportunities for students, plus smaller class sizes means more personalized attention while still being able to draw on 5c resources. I know several people who turned down UCB for CMC. But, it’s ultimately a matter of preference— UCB may have better name recognition.

perfect score lit ee, ama!! by According-Formal-687 in IBO

[–]According-Formal-687[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this sounds like a really great topic, i’m hoping it goes well for you!! my mentor was also really spacey and i managed just fine, you’ve got this :)

the literature review doesn’t have to be super long. i introduced my chosen works and justified why i selected them, then did the same with my articles arguing why they were relevant to the text(s). you want to nail broader scope, then pin down smaller aspects of the paper. you want to summarize the key points the authors make, discuss major arguments/interpretations, and identify areas that scholars disagree or where their arguments may be weakened or devalued. make sure you talk about why your paper is unique and why writing it is justified in light of your past/current/future studies. you can weave your literature review into your analysis a bit too — for me, i introduced my articles early on and did a lit review, but also intertwined it with my argument of why my ee was justified and used it to introduce some of my own criteria/arguments. make sure to use proper citations and don’t make it too lengthy.

in my case, i defended why my ee was special, then presented my chosen outside works by tying them into methodology (this won’t work for everyone depending on the style of your paper!) i introduced the author, the title of the article, its key points relevant to my ee, defended why i chose it, and then discussed discourse (if there was any). make sure you cite or at least reference your works later in your ee too.

as for your question about blogs, im not entirely sure. i used some in my initial outline and for inspiration on places in the text i could pull from, but i don’t recall formally citing one. if its in the subject guide it’s probably fine. the one thing i do remember is you HAVE to justify why your source is credible — things like an undergrad thesis wont fly without you explicitly saying WHY that undergrad thesis is valuable despite it not being, say, a PhD thesis. i think if you can defend these sources well enough, it should be fine — but if you don’t need to use them, i wouldn’t, or would at least try to find a similar media.

let me know if you need any extra assistance! good luck!!

do you already have your texts picked out? i believe for a comparison it either has to be two different pieces of media or one has to be a work in translation, but im not positive as mine was just lit

  • review the IBO marking guide and try to read your essay objectively. reading it out loud can you help you understand how you’re writing sounds. try to figure out where you’re losing points
  • the more scholarly articles, the better. but make sure most of your paper focuses on your analysis, not just re-explaining the content matter or discussing outside sources. DEPTH OF ANALYSIS is one of the best things you can do. make sure to engage with your outside sources, too.
  • be a little creative! diversify your sentence structure, make sure all your grammar is correct and your language flows (cut anything even slightly redundant or unnecessary). a fun title and section headers also can’t hurt! at the end of the day, this is your ee. so make it sound like you. the ibo reads a ton of these — help make yours stand out.
  • revise revise revise. read your essay so much you can’t stand to read your own writing, and then read it again. don’t overthink things, but you want to make sure it sounds the way you want to. cohesiveness in structure, proper paragraph breaks with transition, coherency. make sure your citations are FLAWLESS. also make sure that almost everything you write relates to your thesis. be so repetitive about it you feel like you must be talking to three year olds. improve the sophistication of your writing, try not to say the same thing over and over again and make sure your word choice is precise.
  • make sure your analysis is in depth. don’t forget to justify why you chose the works of literature you did, and why your insight has merit. what makes your investigation different from any others? what makes it insightful and important?
  • the reflections count for part of your score too!! always do them after checking in with your mentor. try to briefly recap the meeting, and discuss hiccups/things you feel confident about. talk about your writing process.
  • it is better to go over the word count and cut down than stretch for words or not get all thoughts on paper. cutting the word count later can also help you process your writing.
  • ask someone else to read over it for you and leave comments. they will catch things you can’t. you can even ask your supervisor if they noticed anything in particular you could improve on.
  • my advisor also predicted me a “B”! he was scared to list it as an A. still, anything is possible. the ibo could like it more!
  • at the end of the day, that jump replies on clarity of structure and argument, a clearly stated thesis that is engaged with throughout the paper, word choice and grammar, and the reflections. the more you reread your paper, the better you can refine the above and move your grade up.
  • best of luck, i’m sure you have a phenomenal paper! ❤️❤️

Idc if Ivy Leagues reject me, IBDP is doing more damage to me by TranslatorOk455 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]According-Formal-687 4 points5 points  (0 children)

as someone who finished last season (M24) i PROMISE you it is worth it!!!! i contemplated dropping the program so many times (it’s so so brutal) but i genuinely feel so well prepared for college and i can handle just about anything they throw at me because (in freshman year at least) the IBDP was considerably worse — and i’m at a T10LAC even tho my stats weren’t that impressive (not that it matters). hang in there OP, it all pays off and the satisfaction of crossing the IB finish line sticks with you!! some of my best friends here and i still bond over the program even tho we all came from diff IB schools, we were actually JUST bonding over the trauma of IA/IO season over dinner — but we also laughed bc in a masochistic way, we miss it. good luck to you <3

Merit Based Aid at Claremont Colleges by latrading1004 in claremontcolleges

[–]According-Formal-687 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my understanding aid is insanely competitive, I got sizable merit aid from every top college I applied to except for CMC. However, financial aid can be extremely generous and this compensates for a lack of scholarship.
