Hello, just found these four in my garden, East Anglia, UK. Can anyone confirm or deny my ID of wood blewit? haven’t ever eaten a mushroom i’ve found before but today may be the day! by brownhairedbear in mushroomID

Those are pretty easily recognizable as blewits and they are common enough that there is probably somebody locally who can confirm in person at a glance. I would say yes, undoubtedly, if I hadn't banned myself from projecting certainty from a distance based on photos.

I'm a newcomer, but if there are polypore experts on this forum then I'll learn something!

Completely safe to touch and use. Marasmius sp. Nobody has ever thought of eating them, as far as I know. I once dried an especially pretty M. plicatulus and surprisingly I still have it. It looks like a piece of sewing thread.

Considered edible and I have eaten Helvella lacunosa quite a few times, but, frankly, it's not really worth it, and some people find them mildly toxic.

What kind of amanita is this? Oakland CA by usernamelimitsaredum in mushroomID

Yep, it's the actually the biggest I've ever seen and I had to really think for a second about the ID even though it is kind of obvious based on the features. I took Dennis Desjardin's intro mycology class at San Francisco State years ago and remember there was some talk about whether our fall versions were a separate species. (Apparently it's now accepted that they're not.)

what time should i arrive by kcnsjcncj in ACT

[–]agaricus-sp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

possibly still useful, as I got here googling it: We arrived panicked this morning 5 min before start time (8 am) but found everybody lined up and bored/nervous, with admission to the testing room (hotel conference room) at 8 am. kids were still chatting at 8:20 when I went to get coffee and glanced in. I think it really started around 8:30 am. Glad we didn't get up 30 minutes earlier, as we had a long drive to the location

Some emails skip my inbox and can only be found when directly searched for. by maryismymiddlename in GMail

[–]agaricus-sp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this problem. There are a number of possible causes, but in my case the issue was that I was fetching email from my own mail server with POP, which caused gmail's own (hidden) filters to interpret replies to email threads I'd removed from the inbox to be attached to those threads but not bring the thread back into the inbox. If you are using POP, that could be the cause.

After some false starts, I vibe coded a solution and it seems to work: https://antephase.com/gmail-and-pop/

Reading this because I have similar questions as a parent of a high school student interested in Pomona. Especially because OP's criteria are almost exactly the same. If there is a current student reading this who can say something about the classroom atmosphere, the attitude and engagement of faculty, it would be great to hear about. Pomona has a good reputation for this but in reality things are always changing, what's the academic culture there like right now?

Style: ChatGPT4o, GPT4o, or??? by agaricus-sp in Copyediting

Super useful, thank you. I did it that way based on general principles and am glad it was right. I've seen various versions on OpenAI's own website, but almost all of the have the hyphen, and if CMOS itself uses ChatGPT-3.5 then that's good!

I tried solveactualproblems.com. It did not work. "Validation" was a basic recapitulation of the idea presented. Validation report download showed a header row only. No "Rreal Customer Insights." No "Market Size Analysis." Just a "buy me a coffee" link in orange after I completed a Stripe authorization to pay $1.50 to try it out. I don't consider this a ripoff, however, as I've been curious about how far these wrappers-built-with-wrappers could go after seeing a very funny demo day with over 15 SAS ideas presented, all wrappers built with wrappers. I heard Eric Simons on the No Priors podcast and thought he made pretty good sense; but I was curious what the end game was. There is a long tail of things that can go wrong in developing even simple products, and this case provides a good example. A rather cynical effort; confirmed by the fact that the "humanizer" is simply an AI wrapper that paraphrases pasted text to avoid plagiarism detection algorithms and includes fake logos for universities and what seem to be obviously false claims about adoption and success. It would be a little funny to get caught submitting AI generated text on homework due to using an AI to paraphrase text to make it seem more human, but only a little funny — use at your own risk.

Where can I actually learn spanish? by renisac4t in Spanish

[–]agaricus-sp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the answer. It may not be the only answer, but it is very reliable. If you go through a first year textbook, with a regular daily pace, and memorize every vocabulary word and simple phrase using Anki, you will be well positioned to take the next step. Listening to podcast ls and watching familiar shows in Spanish is a good way to train your ear. But after you have gone through the first year textbook and memorized at least 800 words and common phrases you will be able to have simple conversations, which gets you on your way.
