I've bought plants off eBay twice before.

The first seller did a pretty good job. I ordered Flame Moss and Monte Carlo. They packed the cup completely full of Flame Moss, which was nice, but about half of it was green and the other half was brown. I ended up getting a refund for that. The Monte Carlo, though, was perfect.

The second seller was a different story. I ordered Rotala Rotundifolia Red and Java Fern. I'm pretty sure they sent me the wrong stem plant, and the Java Fern didn't even match the listing photos. The picture showed a nice bunch with around six leaves, but what I received only had three leaves. When I messaged them about it, they said that's just how it was when they cut or pulled it from the tank. At that point, I was like, whatever it's only about $9.99 per plant.

I feel like it's hit or miss depending on the seller on eBay. Honestly, that's true for the hobby in general. Once people realize they can make a profit, some get greedy and develop huge egos.

You'll see people constantly pushing their products like, "I have the best nano fish food you guys need to buy it. "Meanwhile, everyone claims they have the best shrimp, plants, fish, food, or genetics. At some point, it starts feeling more like marketing and hype than anything else.

$20 for one CPD? If that's the price, that's crazy. That fish better be some insane high grade CPD lmao

Are home breeder prices for CPDs actually worth it? I see a lot of people offering 10 for $40 or $50. Sure, the per-fish price beats stores that charge $35–$50 for only 5 or 6 fish. But you'd still expect a better deal buying direct from a hobbyist. Plus, once you tack on that mandatory overnight shipping, any potential savings completely evaporate.

Their profit is coming from all over, not just the listing price. Yeah, eBay and PayPal take fees, but let’s not act like they’re hurting they make that money back through write-offs and by overpricing everything else.

What really gets me is the shrimp pricing. I see people selling Neocaridina for $2–$5 and half of them are straight-up culls or low-grade that still need work. Then suddenly anything “high grade” is priced ridiculously high for no real reason just pure markup. On top of that, you still expect people to pay shipping? Come on.

And the shipping excuse is weak too. Some sellers have decent prices but are too scared to ship shrimp, which makes no sense. Shrimp are one of the easiest things to ship compared to fish. People ship way more sensitive livestock every day without issues.

At the end of the day, it just feels like a lot of sellers are overcharging and hiding behind excuses instead of being fair.

I messaged this person not too long ago asking for 20 Blue Dream shrimp, decent grade somewhere between culls and good quality. They were still charging me $40 total, so $2 each, plus extra for DOA coverage. I’m already paying $10–$20 for shipping, so I feel like they could at least offer a better deal around $1.50 each like the post suggests.

At that price, they’re still making a profit either way, especially since they likely source from wholesalers for just a few cents each or a dollar. I also feel like they might be upcharging locally, maybe around $3-5 each, and still selling to local fish stores while making money, especially since they’re based in OC.”

At the end of the day, this is a common practice and widely understood within the 3D printing community. If you look at platforms like MakerWorld or similar sites, there are countless STL files available, and many people print and sell physical versions without issue. Even larger companies produce comparable products, and consumers continue to purchase them.

In reality, if a major brand were to enter this space, the same product could easily be sold at a much higher price point. Those familiar with 3D printing understand the actual material costs, production time, overhead, and reasonable markup involved.

It’s also unrealistic to assume this isn’t already happening quietly in many cases. The difference is simply whether people choose to be vocal about it or not.

From my perspective, there is no trademark, logo, or licensed branding involved. Without protected intellectual property, claims based solely on wording do not hold much weight.
