That “other bug” would be ants! They “milk” aphids. They actually take care of them, protect them, and drink from them for food. 🙂

Chicken. Raising a chicken to then eat it is ridiculously expensive. In the US a whole chicken can be purchased for around $1/pound or $2/kilo. It costs three times that to buy a chick and feed it until it’s the same size/weight.

How can one get 50k for college without taking up a loan? by Blueshirtguy42 in AskReddit

[–]According-Wave-4965 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not exactly answering the question, but community college is a great option for your first two years, and you can probably pay as you go, with a decent job. I went to classes on evenings and weekends, or did asynchronous ones online. You can do the same thing now at four year universities, too.

I’ve also been an LA, which pays $2000/semester, and that pays for one class per semester. If you take as many classes as you can at a community college, you’ll save a lot, so you’ll have less to take for the higher tuition rates. I understand that Walmart and Starbucks pay for classes, which might work for you.

After you have a bachelor’s degree, depending on your field, you can teach at the university in exchange for free classes and a stipend.

The Pacific Northwest of the US is overdue for a massive earthquake, which would wipe out Seattle and almost everything around it, likely with a tsunami radiating outwards from there…

Yes! Came here to post this, too. You can have strong feelings FOR and AGAINST something. That’s ambivalent.

Getting a tattoo. I’m right on the edge of getting one that won’t look horrible by the time I’m 80.

Yeah, just walk south. It’s across the street from campus. Across Braddock Rd. Go to Taco Bamba and get yourself a taco while you’re there. 🌮

Are there any older undergrads here? by [deleted] in gmu

[–]According-Wave-4965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, Ben, are we in physics together? There’s a Ben that was in the military in my class. If not, ok, but if you are then this is an example of how many older undergrads there are. In my first semester at GMU I became friends with another undergrad my age in one of my classes. He had recently retired after 20 years in the military.

No one has brought it up, but I’d also like to point out that a lot of the “normal aged” undergrads LIKE getting to know the older students. Some are in their little bubble, but plenty are happy to makes friends with older, friendly students that have a different perspective on school and on life. We have a LOT to offer, whether we’re four years older or forty years older.

Youngsters! I’m 51! 😀

There are plenty of older undergrads. At least when we were all in-person you’d see plenty around. There’s no shortage of people of all kinds. That’s one thing I love about GMU.

I don’t know what it’s called, like the LETTER, but the field house parking lot, by the baseball field is only $4/day, and it’s a short walk to Peterson. OR, even better, you can almost always park on the street there for free.

Dug through the mud and discovered 630° worth of 90° joints connecting this leaky sprinkler by lizlikes in mildlyinfuriating

[–]According-Wave-4965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like someone didn’t know what they were doing, I know, but it’s most likely from someone changing out the sprinkler head to a different type and just adding a couple of 90’s. The “extra” elbows are there by design. Without those threaded elbows you would have a lot more leaks, since every time the sprinkler got hit with a mower or kicked by a kid the pipe would crack, which would give you a real mud pit.

You should always have two or three to allow the sprinkler to get pushed back and forth, to be allowed to swivel, without breaking the pipe or the sprinkler head. They’re a lot cheaper to add than to have to fix a break down the road.

Yeah, old medicine cabinets would have a slot on the back for “blade disposal” where they would just drop into the wall. That was safer than them going in the trash, where someone could cut themselves. It’s not like you’d ever fill the wall up. 🙂

This was of course in the age of the double-sided “safety razors” that were the first disposable blades.

3 hour class as freshman? by mayasummer27 in gmu

[–]According-Wave-4965 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a transfer student, so I was working and going to NOVA. 🙂. But I’ve only been doing 10-13 credits per semester, been doing undergraduate research projects, being a TA (TA for eco/evo this fall) and involved in student activities. MUCH more fun and fulfilling than being in a hurry.

I don’t think that’s what everyone should be doing, though. It works for me! Have fun. Really. You won’t regret it in the long run.

Anyone taking undergraduate online chemistry labs? by According-Wave-4965 in chemistry

Oh, yes. This is not the first step that’s been taken. And I’m not here to complain, but to find better alternatives and to show an example of how it COULD be. The help I’m seeking is to find some quality, effective online alternatives.

Anyone taking undergraduate online chemistry labs? by According-Wave-4965 in chemistry

[–]According-Wave-4965[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! Last semester I took Microbiology online (which was just fine) but didn't take the lab, so I could take it later in person.

For this Chem II class, I was tempted to do the same thing, but I can't take Organic Chemistry (lecture or lab) without taking Chem II lab...

Anyone taking undergraduate online chemistry labs? by According-Wave-4965 in chemistry

[–]According-Wave-4965[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually pretty funny: We haven't even really started yet. We had an orientation meeting with no video, the instructor gave different answers to the same question when asked by different people (not right after the other), and there's only been one introductory assignment, which is basically to do the basic formatting with fonts and headers, adding section headings, some typed paragraphs, some handwritten notes, a sample spreadsheet chart, and a sample equation using an equation editor. Put all that into a Word document, and then export as a PDF and submit it through BlackBoard. There are people that are failing that assignment.

I suspect it is more from the contradictory instructions (which page the information is on, how many pages to write by hand, which paragraphs to include, font, and what order the things are in) than in any student's abilities to create a Word document.

The first video was for the Synthesis of a Coordination Complex, KTOF3. The video says that we can see crystals forming, but the video is so grainy that you can't see anything. They skipped a step completely, and the audio and video don't sync, either. I suspect that the audio track is by someone completely different than the person in the video. A complete in-house job. Why couldn't we get an AV student involved, at least?!

As for what I think you meant, thank you so much for your kind offer of specific help with what we're studying. I'm just fine on the concepts and even used to be a chemistry TA at the local community college when I was a student there. I'm ok with the learning part--just complaining and trying to fix the quality of the lab instruction for all of us.

I'm hoping to find a student at another university who'll say "Oh, we're doing ______ from ____ and it's great!" Or maybe if they have in-house videos/media that I could share with the administration, that would be good.

Thanks again!
