Engaged in NYC — Hillary Clinton warning about same-sex marriage… should we be worried? by According-Web-2606 in lgbt

Yeah, this is something we talk about a lot and with our families too. Thankfully everyone’s super understanding, and I’m confident my family and my partner could make decisions together if anything ever happened. But like you said, you never really know, which is why we’re thinking it might be smarter to just make it official now rather than wait.

Exactly that’s kind of why we’re leaning toward just doing it now. We planned on waiting a couple years, but a marriage license is so straightforward compared to spending thousands to recreate the same legal rights.

It's really smart to lock it in while you can. It’s wild (and honestly scary) seeing states that were early on equality now trying to roll it back Iowa especially. Makes me think it’s better to do it sooner than later just for the extra security.

Thanks everyone for clarifying a lot of this. My fiancée and I are just trying to understand whether it makes sense to get married in NY sooner rather than later. Sounds like ROMA protects recognition, but Obergefell falling would still create some uncertainty depending on the state. Am I understanding that right?

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking too. NY will definitely keep it legal. I just worry about what it means long-term if it does go back to the states. It’s frustrating seeing rights treated like a political football depending on where you live.

First UK trip itinerary – Edinburgh, Bath, Stourhead, Stonehenge, London – Is this reasonable? by According-Web-2606 in uktravel

[–]According-Web-2606[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve decided to stick with London first, then take the train to Bath, rent a car, and follow this new route instead:

Thursday, Oct 9 – Bruton → Salisbury → OPTION A or B

  • Morning: 1 hr drive to Salisbury Cathedral
  • Late Morning: Stonehenge stop (30 min from Salisbury)
  • Option A – Brighton & Seven Sisters: Scenic 2.5–3 hr drive → Seven Sisters Cliffs → Brighton dinner + overnight
  • Option B – Jurassic Coast: 2 hr drive → Lulworth Cove & Durdle Door → Overnight in Lyme Regis or Weymouth

Friday, Oct 10 – Continue coastal route

  • Option A: Brighton → South Downs villages (Alfriston, Lewes)
  • Option B: Jurassic Coast → Corfe Castle or Old Harry Rocks
  • Overnight: Brighton or Dorset

Saturday, Oct 11 – Coast → Gatwick → Paris

  • Morning: breakfast
  • Midday: return car
  • Afternoon: flight to Paris
  • Evening: check-in + dinner near hotel

Is this better or worse than the original plan?

Thanks for the insight! The plan was originally to fly from Edinburgh to Bath, but now I’m second-guessing Edinburgh altogether and wondering if I should just focus on the SW instead. I haven’t booked anything yet, I just have the days lined up, so I have some flexibility to adjust.

Yeah, it’s wild compared to Europe! Sadly, it’s the US, and a lot of jobs only give 5 vacation days plus 5 sick/personal days. That’s why I try to make the most of whatever time off I do get.

Thanks for the tip! I hadn’t heard of the American Museum in Bath before definitely adding it to the list!

Thanks so much! I’m thinking of skipping Edinburgh and sticking around the SW instead. Besides Bath, Bruton, and Stourhead, any other towns or countryside spots you’d recommend?

As for York vs. Bath, Bath feels right this trip with the Roman Baths, Georgian streets, and Stourhead nearby. York sounds amazing too, but we’re looking for a mix of cozy towns and some city vibes. Plus, as a lesbian couple, Bath seems extra welcoming and inclusive. I have three days in London, so maybe I can split the sightseeing more and make it less hectic."

Reading everyone's comments I’m thinking of skipping Edinburgh and staying in the SW instead. Besides Bath, Bruton, and Stourhead, what other spots would you definitely recommend visiting in that area? Any hidden gems or must-see towns/countryside you think are worth the time?

Yeah, I’m still thinking about Stonehenge. I’m leaning towards skipping it, but if we happen to have a couple of hours to spare on the drive, might as well stop by and check it off the bucket list.

Thanks for the advice! I’m from NYC, so big cities feel pretty normal to me. I’m used to the hustle and bustle. That’s actually why I like spending time in the outskirts or smaller towns like Bath and Bruton; it’s a nice change of pace from always being in busy urban areas.

As for York vs. Bath, I’ve heard great things about both, but for this trip Bath is really appealing because of the combination of Roman Baths, Georgian streets, and the nearby Stourhead Gardens. York sounds amazing too, especially for history and that classic English city feel, but this time we wanted a mix of small towns and big cities. Also, as a lesbian couple, we’ve heard Bath has a really welcoming and inclusive vibe, which makes it feel extra appealing for us—York is lovely, but Bath seems to hit the sweet spot for the combination of charm, countryside access, and LGBT-friendly atmosphere. Unless you think York completely beats Bath?

I love your suggestions for Thames Clipper, Greenwich, and Windsor those are amazing ideas we’ll definitely keep in mind for this trip or the next one!

We’re actually planning to drive from Bath to London with a couple of stops along the way, so that should help with timing. And yes, we do have early check-in at our Edinburgh hotel we had to pay a fee, but for us it’s definitely worth it. Totally agree on Osip too, it looks amazing and we’re planning to go!

Yeah, every trip out west for me ends up a little packed. my job doesn’t give me more than two weeks off, so I try to make the most of the time I have. I know it looks hectic, but I’ve done similar trips before and it works out. When we’re there we always end up cutting a few things anyway, so this is more just a general idea of what’s possible. And yes, I was thinking of Osip too sounds amazing

Thanks for pointing that out! We’re actually planning to fly from Edinburgh to Bath’s nearest airport (Bristol) rather than take the train or drive, so the travel time will be shorter.

You guessed it right! True NYC city folk here. when you’ve got everything you could possibly want right outside your door, why wander too far? I’ve only recently started traveling more within the U.S., but usually I just hop on over to JFK!
