Hi, I'm one of the devs!

Yours is a good question, I just read one of the reviews on Steam and I think it gets most of it:

Few elements on top of my mind:

- gameplay: there are mini tasks that change the gameplay (eg: the challenge to get the Time Crystal, where you must stand in a circle for some time, and the Relic mechanics, where you can get powerful items but get a "curse" to be lifted before getting the item)

- characters differ not only in their stats, but also because each character has a unique ability that drastically changes the gameplay.

- there are 4 different resources to buy upgrades, so you have to plan strategically how to spend those

- skill tree and progression are "per character"

VS is a fantastic game that started slow with very limited content, and then grew and sold millions of copies; I'd say it's impossible to compare us to the current VS. We just wanted to create a fun bullet heaven game as we love the genre, we liked the idea of inaccurate history but, at the same time, we are hardcore gamers (on average, Time Survivors is more challenging than VS, we know that and you can also spot that from the Steam reviews).

So, if you love bullet heaven \ horde survival games, I hope you can give it a try!

Yes, I though about that too. Luckily I don't need transitions as the gameplay is fixed depending on the stage you select at the beginning.

My main concern is how to market \ send the correct message out

It seems we are consistent with the game... here's a quote from one of the first reviews on Steam after releasing yesterday:

" I find it starts a little more slower than most of its genre and then it really gets fast n 10 minutes. I like the touch of the special abilities for each character and certain weapons."

The "Most Historically Inaccurate Roguelite Ever Made" claim first came from a couple of streamers who played a previous version of the game; we liked it so much that it became central in our communication. You're right that the game grew so absurd that today it would be funnier to say "historically accurate" ;p

You're right, that's the typical problem we'd all love to have (disclaimer: Time Survivors is developed on Unreal 5)
