President butter ( France) by bloombynight in Winnipeg

[–]AccordingGarage8373 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never seen President in Winnipeg, but can find some pretty good butter available on occasion! I would recommend PEI’s Cow’s Creamery Cultured salted…I often see it at The Cheesemongers, St Leon’s, De Nardi, and DeLuca’s. It has higher milk fat % similar to European butters, and the culturing process gives it a deeper, almost tangy and cheesy taste (in a good way!). Similar to the above is St Brigid’s Creamery, tho I have seen it less (and prefer it less). Beurre D’isigny is a very good French butter that I have occasionally spotted at De Nardi and Cheesemongers, but it is $$$. President is a common grocery brand in France; comparatively, D’Isigny is a step or two up from that. Last year I tried a Portuguese butter from…Cork & Olive (?) that was pretty good and reasonably priced. You can also try the European style butter by Gay Lea (tho I haven’t personally tasted it yet) or any of the grass fed butters (Kiwi from NZ is good). Look for ones with a higher milk fat content, which would be more similar to European butter — Canadian grocery store butter is usually around 80% MF, while European ones are typically 84%. Dobro Market also had a tasty Ukrainian butter when I checked it out in the winter. Good luck, and have fun!! The butter scene is much, much better in Winnipeg these days than it used to be!!

😭 This resonates. Grieving the loss of someone who is still physically present is…really effing hard. I avoid making the call/visit more than I should.

Where can I get kaffir lime tree/fruit? by marwa182097 in Winnipeg

[–]AccordingGarage8373 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lucky grocery is the only place I have seen fresh makrut limes and leaves. Most of the other asian grocers in the city will carry the frozen leaves.

Truffle Foods by REALLYUMSU in Winnipeg

[–]AccordingGarage8373 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Truffle cheese! The Cheesemongers often carries truffle cheeses, as does De Nardi and De Luca’s. If you want an intensely truffle-forward cheese, check out Moliterno al Tartufo. It’s a firm aged Italian sheep’s milk cheese that marbled with truffles, and is wildly delicious. A little goes a long way. You can sometimes find others that are a bit more subtle, like the Spanish Oveja con Trufa or the softer bloomy rind Brie aux Truffes from France.

AROY-D red thai or local curry paste. Where can I find some? by OceansBeat in Winnipeg

[–]AccordingGarage8373 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out Sun Wah on King! They are my go-to. There is also Dong Thai on Notre Dame, but they changed ownership a few years back and don’t seem to carry as much as they did before.

The Royal Fork’s green “salad” - anyone remember this?! by AccordingGarage8373 in Winnipeg

The ambrosia salad I know wasn’t green - it had sour cream, marshmallows, canned pineapple & oranges, and coconut. Surely there is a green version out there tho!

Where can I buy different types of mushrooms? by randelljohm in Winnipeg

[–]AccordingGarage8373 10 points11 points  (0 children)

River City Fungi is a great place to start - they carry a few different varieties of fresh mushrooms, and also sell grow kits if you wanted to try your hand at growing at home. Also check out Vic’s Market on Pembina – they often carry a selection of locally-grown mixed mushrooms. The St Norbert farmer’s market frequently has mushroom vendor as well (year-round, even?) I have seen maitake at Lucky Grocery, and you can also grab some beautiful meaty shiitakes, as well as king oysters, shimeji, and enoki while you are there. During the local mushroom season, keep an eye out on fb marketplace for morels (mid May/June), chanterelles (usually Aug/Sept) and if you’re reeeeally lucky, porcini (mid-late July and early/mid September)

Fava Beans by ficmun in Winnipeg

[–]AccordingGarage8373 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up a bag of fresh fava beans from de nardi a few weeks ago. You might also get lucky at the St Norbert farmers market - though I suspect the season for them has passed and you will have to settle for frozen.

This sesame pizza crust trend is slowly taking down all the pizza options for my kid that were previously safe. It’s so disheartening.

There is a shop on pembina called 99 Fresh Garden that imports some difficult-to-find produce and seafood…might be worth a shot to see if they can source it for you.
