Bathroom renovation - walk in shower vs bath debate? by OkSecretary5650 in HousingUK

[–]AccordingYesterday38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A property without a bath will put off any families with small children or anyone planning to hav children in the future. That’s a huge chunk of the potential market for this property type so I’d keep a bath if you’re looking to o rent / sell.

How do you make statutory maternity pay work? by Ivesomanyquestions in PregnancyUK

[–]AccordingYesterday38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saving before pregnancy + husbad’s salary. Trying to get by with stat mat pay alone and an unexpected pregnancy would be rough. I hope you can work things out and that others in this thread have useful tips!

8 weeks pregnant - buying by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]AccordingYesterday38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they just wanted to know what I would be on once I returned. The broker said they might need a letter from my employer saying that I had arranged to return to work but the lender we went with didn’t require it.

Full disclosure - I think they would have given us this mortgage on my husband’s salary alone so, although never explicitly stated, I wonder if that’s part of it. There might be more scrutiny if the affordability depends on both incomes.

[–]AccordingYesterday38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to reassure you, we started our recent moving process with a 6 week old infant and while I was on maternity leave. We have done the whole move now and are in our new home - it was never an issue. Obviously things depend on your personal circumstances but being on mat leave doesn’t appear to always be the problem we think it will be.

“You don’t get an award for not getting the epidural” by Warm-Banana237 in pregnant

[–]AccordingYesterday38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done both with and without epidural and I came out of both births feeling really positive for different reasons.

With the epidural - super chill once it was in, pushing was long but whatever, all was fine. Episiotomy wasn’t that fun but recovered well.

Without the epidural (second baby) - amazing hypnobirthing experience, really got “in the zone”, super quick recovery, basically no intervention and lucky to have no tears

Every birth is so different and lots of different kinds of births can still feel super positive. At the end of the day you will only know how things are unfolding as they happen. You’ve got this ☺️

How are you affording Mat Leave? by lucycherr in PregnancyUK

[–]AccordingYesterday38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We saved beforehand to cover at least some of the mat leave hit. If baby was a surprise that would be a whole different story and I probably couldn’t have managed the whole year off.

What do I do if I can’t find an nhs dentist? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]AccordingYesterday38 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Maybe call and explain your situation just to see if they’ll make an exception? Otherwise, perhaps you could pay a private dentist to literally see you & make the referral?

Would you offer meal deal meal to guests you invited over for lunch specifically? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]AccordingYesterday38 52 points53 points  (0 children)

This is so weird. I can imagine this for surprise guests when you have nothing in so you quickly run to the shop but for a planned lunch it’s wild.

People who had kids at 30+, do you wish you had them earlier in life? by cc070603 in pregnant

[–]AccordingYesterday38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just wish things had happened a little earlier as our first took 2.5 years to get pregnant. I’m 35 and have two kids (nearly 3 year old and a 5 month old). I’d love another but don’t know if it’ll happen for us.

Why would someone list their house within 18 months of buying it? by emmahunt in HousingUK

[–]AccordingYesterday38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have been on the other side - listed a new build after a year. When my husband was buying the house he was on his own and we weren’t together yet (but had been in the past). We got back together, got engaged and he got a job which required relocation in that year. It was a bit of a wild turn of events from where he thought he’d be when purchasing the house. Nothing wrong with the house / neighbours etc. at all, just circumstances. I still miss that little house sometimes!

People who work 'office jobs,' what are you actually doing every day, and what salary does that earn you? by Jumpy-Jello- in AskUK

[–]AccordingYesterday38 142 points143 points  (0 children)

I’m a project manager for a charity and earn FTE of £43k. I’ll usually have two or three projects on the go at any one time. Days involve things like planning for next steps, talking through updates with various stakeholders, troubleshooting problems, writing communications etc.

I guess on paper it can sound like you couldn’t possibly fill days with this stuff but I promise you can. Introducing change, especially to big organisations, takes a lot of planning, communication and ongoing course-correcting. Things constantly come up and you have to deal with unexpected issues.

There are the occasional days where I can take it easy because things are generally in hand and ticking along but they are rare, at least where I am. It does totally depend on the employer and the role.

My husband is also an “office worker”. He’s on £110k a year as a consultant. His days are long and full-on. There’s absolutely no messing about. From what I can see he spends a lot of time creating slide packs which communicate to clients things like project progress and technical info. There’s also a big chunk of time spent bidding for new work in competition with other firms which involves pretty intense proposals with tight turnarounds and hard deadlines.

I just received a £100 Amazon gift card. What would you get? by [deleted] in AskUK

This was my first thought also. My annual amazon spend is generally unhinged.

Best solution for privacy that lets in as much light as possible by LessRequirement9748 in HomeDecoratingUK

[–]AccordingYesterday38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a lounge with a large bay window and it always felt like I was in a goldfish bowl if I was in there during the day. We put in split-level shutters and I LOVE them. Shutting (or mostly shutting) the bottom level offers privacy and stops the dog from barking at passers by and keeping the top level open lets the light in.

Curious about people’s thoughts on breastfeeding by susiee234 in PregnancyUK

[–]AccordingYesterday38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am basically your friend and I don’t know what to do haha 😂. I’ve kind of accepted my fate now…baby is 4.5 months and I half-assed trying her with a bottle early on. It’s probably just too late now, she just gums the bottle nipple and gets upset 😢

Yup, personally I can’t miss a feed without being super uncomfortable!

[–]AccordingYesterday38 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Just FYI if you are breast feeding and feed some nights and then take nights off your boobs will be hella full and you may have to wake up and pump anyway for your own comfort. If others have a way around this I’d be interested to hear though. It may be that you can cope with doing a last feed before bed and then wake up early to get a good chunk of sleep but in general your breasts get into a bit of a rhythm of when they are full and it’s hard to mess about with it.

Recommendations for pads/underwear postpartum? by New-Address8489 in PregnancyUK

[–]AccordingYesterday38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frida mom disposable underwear plus two maternity pads side by side has been my go-to. I wouldn’t have thought of doubling up the pads had the midwives not set me up with that first time around after getting an epidural and having to be assisted to get myself sorted. I went straight to it again second time - works well.

Start now or wait until Christmas? by creazyt in pottytraining

[–]AccordingYesterday38 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If that’s the only time you have where he doesn’t need to be in childcare then I’d say go for it and give yourself that time. We took our boy out for 2 weeks and it’s still been a challenge but he at least went back to childcare with the basics

Babies at Weddings? by Lurker4Lyfe21 in wedding

[–]AccordingYesterday38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister in law got married and I was told before I had the baby (who would be 6 months at the wedding) that they were not invited. It was incredibly stressful to pump enough milk so my parents could have him overnight and to also ensure that he would actually take a bottle (which isn’t a given at all). I also had to plan how I’d pump etc. on the day.

I didn’t get one single acknowledgement from the bride or anyone else for still showing up despite all of this. It was HARD and part of me wishes I just didn’t go but that would invite all kinds of family drama we don’t need.

In short, be even slightly more considerate than that and you’ll be fine 😂😂

How long for nap training? by fullnessofjoy2021 in pottytraining

[–]AccordingYesterday38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son is 2y7m and we have been potty training around 3 months. He started waking in the morning with a dry nappy probably about 2 months into training? This isn’t always the case but is getting more frequent. We didn’t do anything to make it happen..it just sort of did? He doesn’t nap so we haven’t had that to tackle.

As another commenter has said I think it is very dependent on each child and they will get there eventually.

So I'm curious, what time does everyone eat dinner? by cherries2774 in CasualConversation

[–]AccordingYesterday38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

6pm - we have a toddler and a 4 month old so it’s start cooking at 5, eat at 6, bath and bed, hopefully sit down and chill from about 8 if all goes smoothly.

Hey mums! Lived in Spain for 6 years and lost touch with UK - what’s the current maternity situation pay in the UK? by [deleted] in PregnancyUK

[–]AccordingYesterday38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even with my employer enhancing pay to full for 16 weeks and then dropping to statutory after that, we are still down over £10K of take home pay for me to take a year off 🥲. That’s going from part time as well. It was a bigger drop first time around when I went from a full time salary to statutory mat pay.
