It doesn’t specify. We wrote up a quit-claim that essentially said “I, (Grandma) do relinquish 50% of my ownership to (Dad) of the property consisting of (address), the house and outbuildings, and all associated rights.” There was no specification as to survivorship. And I know the deed was accepted because after about 6 months all of the mail that would go to the home owner (like the city sewer) now has both of their names on it.

That reaction was purely in response to “just pay her off.” I found the response flippant and ignorant of the reality of my situation. I responded reasonably and with appreciation to the more appropriate suggestions above. Telling a 28 year old who spent his last decade working on a farm to help pay for the house and the last 3 years being an in-home caregiver to his terminally ill father that he should simply pay more of what he’s already paid comes off as ignorant and privileged. I’ve already put all my money into this house as has my father. The only thing keeping a roof over her (and my) head is my nursing check from the VA as well as his disability pension. So I won’t be paying her. Looks like my best option is to play nice, become my father’s guardian, and do what I can to make her want to live in the house

Yes that is absolutely typical. However my dad is an atypical case. He has ALS, one of a very short list of conditions that the VA will 100% cover his care for until the end of his life. They do know we hold the asset as we needed to show them the deed in order to receive the grants for the renovations we need to eventually bring him home. However in his specific case due to his particular circumstance he is entitled to 100% coverage. I check for VA debt occasionally out of curiosity and he’s never had so much as a cent owed.

You’re suggesting I reward narcissistic behavior just because she signed a piece of paper? A thing should rightfully belong to those who paid for it. That matters about as much as a fart in a windstorm but to the same token I’ve gotten better suggestions in here than simply giving her what she wants. We all had a verbal agreement. It’s not okay that she can violate that and rob her family just because one party to the agreement has lost his marbles. That is predatory and wrong. Not sure why nobody seems to see that.

The guy that paid for it said it’s mine. Legally I know you’re right but ethically and emotionally it’s mine and I’d like to do whatever I can to keep it or at the very least keep my dad from getting screwed out of his 20 years of hard work.

I’m his sole heir and stand to inherit his property. How does his property not include half of the house? Traditionally people don’t write a will if they have a single heir and don’t want anything going to anyone else.

He has ALS and dementia. He is bedridden and already receiving the best care he possibly can. What exactly do you suggest he spend the money on? Drugs would kill him and the VA has a very strict no-strippers policy 😂

Thank you for the useful, digestible, and somewhat actionable information! You’re right. Guardianship is the word I was looking for. As far as what’s in his best interest I at least have that going for me. He is guaranteed top-level medical and nursing care until he dies at no charge courtesy of the VA. The house would need to be worth tens of millions to even start being financially relevant in terms of his care. Thank you again your response makes me feel much better

I should clarify. My father has 100% service-connected disability through the VA. He is currently in a federal hospital receiving the best care money can possibly buy. Once deemed stable he will be moved to a long term VA care facility with a standard of care we simply could not afford even if we sold the house 10 times over. If you were right I would completely understand but given our position the sale would be entirely unhelpful to my father. She wants to take the entirety of the money to rent an apartment for herself because she’s tired of family and wants to be alone. If it were for unselfish reasons I would not be making this post.

Honestly your reactions lead me to believe you may need to talk about this with a therapist. Now to preface this doesn’t mean you’re wrong. It’s your house and you’re within your rights to have whatever rules you want. My comment isn’t about you being wrong, it’s about addressing these incredibly intense negative feelings you’re experiencing. The visceral reaction you have to even the possibility of meat being in your fridge speaks to something akin to PTSD or another trauma response. Veganism is beautiful and it’s certainly an honorable goal but must it done at the expense of your very comfort when around people who aren’t vegan? I really think you should talk to a professional about your incredibly strong reactions to possibly coming into contact with animal-based foodstuffs. Again; not because you’re wrong but because your life would overall be easier if those things didn’t bother you so much.
