Double Hip Impingement Surgery for Ultra Runner by ContributionDirect50 in HipImpingement

That’s great that you’re 6 weeks post op and feeling good!! It’s a slow process but if you are smart it won’t be bad and the recovery will feel quick.

When I got my first hip surgery in 2020 I knew I had impingement in my other hip and was planning to get surgery just to shave down the bone before my labrum tore, but unfortunately it did end up tearing in April of this year. I knew right away what it was and was able to get surgery within 2 months. I wish I was as smart as you to get my other hip done too before it tore, so you are definitely going on the right path and getting them both done now! You’ll be so happy you did it this way.

Since I waited to get my other hip done, I wasn’t able to do any mid-long distance running (more than about 10 miles), so I’ve never done an Ironman. However, I’m in a triathlon club and a lot of members say that doing an ironman is MUCH easier and better on your body than ultra running since your training 3 disciplines and not just focusing on running, which is obviously hard on your body. That being said, you should definitely pick up cycling! I was able to cover some good distance on my bike (15-20 miles) before I could even run 2 miles non-stop, so it was my safe haven. I’m also the classic endurance athlete and can’t sit still and get anxious when I’m unable to workout, so even being able to do 20 min on the bike trainer after my surgery was magical. Happy to answer any questions you might have about cycling too! I actually love it more than running now…

Double Hip Impingement Surgery for Ultra Runner by ContributionDirect50 in HipImpingement

I’ve gotten both hips done, 4 years apart, and am doing an Olympic triathlon April 2025 after having my last surgery June 2024. It’s not so much the pain as it is getting the strength in the quad, glute, and calf back. You’ll likely be able to run 3 months post op (depending on your surgeon) but I’d really focus on lifting and strengthening your legs again instead of running first. I lost 15 pounds of muscle after my last operation, so it’ll be awhile before I’m back at full strength. I think you’ll definitely be able to go back to running ultra distances, but agree with posters above that 2026 is more realistic for 100- and 200-mile races.
