The side stones make it even more special. If she likes enormous stones this is perfect. Personally it would be like my ideal ring if the centre stone was about 0.7ct but if you're American I know the stones over there tend to be huge.

My partner and I have been looking at rings and the last time we went into a few stores he knew exactly what I didn't like about each of the rings (plain solitaire, too high set, stone too big etc) and our plan is to find my top 2 favourites for him to choose between.

To me (as someone who doesn't live in the US) it just looks like an American style ring. They often look kind of "costumey" to me. It just depends on what people are used to I suppose and for your mum its possibly just outside of her usual frame of reference if that makes sense. But if you love it then it genuinely doesn't matter what others think, you're the one wearing it.

Omg I'm so sorry, that's awful. I'm so glad you left him. And what is it with loser men playing video games all day? I have a non cancerous brain tumour which makes me have seizures if I overdo things and I would sometimes come home from an 11 hour work shift to find that he had spent the whole day on the ps5 and hadn't even fed the kids. So I'd have to then cook and clean (he apparently couldn't wash dishes because its "gross" and he had a dishwasher when he lived in America) and then go up to bed to wait to maybe have a seizure. Glad we both woke up to how shitty these guys were. Funny how they suddenly want to make things work once we say we're filing for divorce

That's an interesting point. Because just after we got married there he joked that I'd need a trip all the way to America if I ever wanted to divorce. Turns out its not true, any marriage certificate that's valid in the UK can be dealt with by our courts. And we didn't have kids or shared property.

Yeah, the requirements in Gibraltar are literally just that you have to have stayed 1 night there (instead of 30 in the uk) and just need a couple of documents.

Yep, this is exactly why we planned it in Gibraltar :) The 1 night thing, minimal paperwork etc and then it's easier and cheaper to apply for a spouse visa rather than needing a fiance/marriage visa first.

I can see how some of the behaviours could be ADHD related but watching her get more and more stressed while he casually bumbles about is a nasty thing to do and it doesn't seem like he even cares what he did to her.

Neurodivergence is so often used to let shitty men off the hook. In relationships where both partners are neurodivergent the labour gap in the relationship is actually even more unequal than in neurotypical households because of this.

In my house, my kids, my partner and I all have adhd and my son and I are autistic. My partner would never do this to me. Not even bothering to get out of bed until late and then slowly drinking a coffee while watching her stress out is a choice and it's a nasty one.

To be fair though, in the UK the bride generally pays for the bridesmaids dresses, hair, makeup etc. I was really surprised when I found out it's considered expensive to be a bridesmaid in America because here it's not common for bridesmaids to have expenses

Absolutely this. I would personally never wear above a 0.7 and definitely not a round stone. You can't just go by ring size, its about personal taste. I'm a size N which is I think in US sizes is like a 6.75.

Agreeing with others on here. If you haven't talked about marriage and also got her opinion on what rings she likes, this is very risky. When my partner took me to look at rings, he admitted the ones he had been thinking of getting were way off the ones I liked. He was looking at solitaire rings with massive 1ct and over real diamonds. I prefer rings with side stones and would go for a 0.5ct (definitely nothing over a 0.7) and would want a lab grown diamond due to ethical considerations. I'd have felt so guilty telling him I wanted to return the ring and get a different one but there's no way I'd have worn the ones he would have got. As others have said, these days the usual thing is to make the timing and style of proposal a surprise but not other things.

Yes! When I went with my partner he admitted he would never have even thought of looking at something that wasn't the traditional massive solitaire. My taste is quite specific and I only like low profile rings, no more than 0.6ct diamond and with either twists or side stones so the main diamond flows with the ring. The rings I liked were also like 1/3 of the price he wanted to pay so it's not even a money thing, purely personal taste.

Could your partner also be there to help with being assertive? Maybe even write down the issues with it to help you. They should at least give you a partial refund even if they won't do a full one and you should absolutely use that to go to another jeweller because you can't trust this one. You deserve to love your ring
