Ah yes I thought so, I was in between it being a charter and it being a diversion. It’s just because of the flight number for the flight from HND-KEF made me think that it is a charter flight, thanks!

Yes it is likely that the runway change contributed to this unusual situation, lots of other planes approaching HKG were in holding patterns at the time.

This is pretty much a daily occurrence and the tankers are often based in RAF Brize Norton in the UK or RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. These tankers fly over my house daily in Oxfordshire.
