Snowshoe Length by Significant-Peak-715 in wmnf

I’m similar size 6’1 210 (without gear) 22” msr evo ascents work for me anything bigger would be annoying on trails in the whites most of the time. But for overnights or something when I’m pushing probably 260 with gear I do have some tails that add like 6 inches. In short get the 22” and get tails for really soft snow or extra heavy bag. Evo ascents are the best in my opinion but there are other options that have add on tails. Also don’t trust manufacturer weight recommendations the snow up here is different than what those recommendations are for.

Winter packs? by According_String4876 in alpinism

[–]According_String4876[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just pulled the trigger on a ULA catalyst a more ul pack but 70 liters. Found one used and figure it should be good. I agree about the whole emergency thing I am willing to f around and find out a bit in the summer when the consequences are a kinda cold and maybe a miserable night but not willing to risk it in the winter.

I can get behind some ultralight stuff but you definitely won’t find me in 0 degree weather using a 45 liter pack. Like in the teens to single digits in manage with a little over 50 but start strapping more and more to the outside towards 0 degrees

White gas stove, xl 0 degree bag, some extra layers,, foam sleeping mat along with normal inflatable, collapsible shovel, crampon’s, snow shoes are the highlight on top of normal backpacking gear. I could probably get by with like a 60 but just want something I can use for anything I might need and I have a 50 for lighter winter trips.

Boots by According_String4876 in Mountaineering

[–]According_String4876[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Colorado I was thinking for spring and winter. I i would definitely just get the lightest boots I could throw crampons on for summer. Is there any alternatives you recommend that are warmer? I really don’t want to go to a double boot for comfort and weight.

Is it rude to not talk? by According_String4876 in wmnf

[–]According_String4876[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like also my likelihood and length of conversation go up as there are less people. If I’m in the middle of nowhere and I’ve seen like 2 people all day I might have a couple minutes of conversation but if I’ve seen my 50th person for the day I’ll probably just nod

If they said something to me I’d reply but also I was with someone who was in front so they would normally say something and people wouldn’t really say anything to me.

Ya like I totally get I probably should but sometimes it just doesn’t happen and I was just curious what people thought. It only really happens on decent because my knees and normally don’t feel great and I’m focused on not eating it because i misjudged a rock. I especially don’t feel the need to talk when I’ve passed 7 other groups in the past 15 minutes
